The 21st Annual Fools Regatta proved to be the event of the year. Sunny skies and blissful breezes made for the perfect day for a sailing regatta on Grace Bay, and crowds came out in record numbers. Hundreds enjoyed the Islandcom sponsored event, where fun played center stage. This year’s event was focused on the kids, but it did not stop the adults from having loads of foolish fun. Both generous contributions help move the project forward and could result in groundbreaking before the end of the year for a second national museum. The building design that was unveiled in March 2010 has been reconfigured into two phases in order to reduce the initial cost to begin construction, said architect Jeff Lee of JAL Consultants. The first phase will be 7,258 square feet, including a 3,223-square-foot exhibit and display area, plus a museum shop and café garden. The second phase would increase the total area to 10,058 square feet. The new museum will be able to display many of the museum’s artifacts which are currently in storage, including the Esperanca and Trouvadore shipwrecks, the mystery of the Lucayan Indians, the coming of the loyalist planters and the early years of development. As a private organization without government funding, the museum depends on donations. U.S. citizens and U.S.-based companies and foundations Free HIV testing will be offered June 24 at all Scotiabank branches in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Scotiabank, in partnership with the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership (CBMP), will not only open its doors as a stand-in clinic Friday, but will circulate information and offer support on the disease. The clinics will be held at Scotia Centre Branch on Cherokee Road and Grace Bay Centre Branch in Providenciales, as well as Dillon Hall in the Anglican Church on Pond Street in Grand Turk. This partnership aims to share information and resources between broadcasters and expands HIV/AIDSrelated programming and public education activities across the Caribbean. “I congratulate Caribbean media for their committed coverage of this important HIV prevention initiative now in its fourth year,” said Dr. Allyson Leacock, executive director of CBMP on HIV/ AIDS. “This unique collaboration, conceived by the CBMP with media mounting a month-long campaign; the exemplary support from the private-sector in Scotiabank offering its locations as some of the testing sites; and the delivery of the technical expertise of Voluntary Counseling and Testing by the public sector JAL Consultants building fund, said Kenrick Walters, the relationship manager for Bordier Bank (TCI) Ltd. who represented the Liechtenstein-based non-profit organization in the donation. Fondation Agena supports deserving causes all over the world, and has over the years provided substantial support in the TCI in education, youth development, social services and cultural preservation, Walters said. The museum is a not-for-profit organization and is run as an independent company with a Board of Trustees. Regional HIV Testing Day: Free tests on June 24 through Ministries and Departments of Health, mobilized by PANCAP, is a model of the power of partnership in the response to HIV in our region.” This HIV/Aids awareness event has been dubbed the Regional Testing Day Campaign and has grown two-fold since its inception three years ago. In 2008, the CBMP and Scotiabank, in collaboration with regional Ministries of Health, introduced the Caribbean’s first Regional HIV Testing Day in Barbados. In 2010, more than 8,400 people from 16 countries across the Caribbean were tested for HIV at Scotiabank branches and other locations. This number was up from 2009, when approximately 5,000 people participated. This year’s Regional Testing Day officially launched in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 27. Approximately 10,000 people from across the Caribbean are expected to be tested during this year’s campaign. According to the Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS, there are approximately 240,000 people in the Caribbean living with HIV. Youngsters help in Red Cross appeal The Turks and Caicos Islands Red Cross held an artistic contest for youngsters that allowed them to express their creative side and raise awareness for the local charity. The competition’s theme was dubbed “Together with Humanity: Helping Each Other” and was held at the beginning of May and open to all TCI schools. Youths showcased their thoughtful and unique adaptation of the theme in beautifully created masterpieces. The Red Cross thanked all schools that took part, including the Ashcroft School, Enid Capron Primary, H.J Robinson High, Mills Institute, Richmond Hill Prep, Shining Stars Prep and Tender Loving Care Pre- School, and judges Elaine Joblin and Betty Ludington.
