Heat Treatment Congress 2012 –
Innovative solutions deal with energy
savings
Dear reader,
In this issue of the heat processing you will find many articles, showing
the innovative power of the furnace industry.
But what are the most urgent matters in our industrial branch?
The demands from the customers are manifold and challenging as
ever. In addition to these competitive drivers we face an upcoming
legislative challenge. The EU Commission is intending to issue limitations
on energy consumption for industrial furnaces. A study for
“Industrial and Laboratory Furnaces and Ovens” has been made by
consultants to provide the base for a decision for the EU Commission.
Producers of furnaces had the opportunity to explain the state of the
art technology and their expectation to future developments with
respect to energy savings in their field of application. Considering
the outcome of the presented study I have to openly express my
concerns how our political representatives should draw meaningful
conclusions for legislation. We, from the furnace industry are fully
aware and committed that to the benefit to all of us we need to
improve the efficiency of our plants steadily. Having the common
goal in mind, I am sure that with further constructive consultations
a meaningful regulation can be found.
At the upcoming Heat Treatment Congress 2012 in Wiesbaden,
Germany, numerous exhibitors again demonstrate their technologicalachievements,
which contribute to the continuously ongoing
development of the heat treatment technology. A lot of innovative
solutions deal with energy savings. This makes me optimistic for
the future.
I wish you an excellent reading of the interesting articles of the heat
processing magazine and hope
that some of them may provide
you an inspiration in
your business life.
Siemens to modernize rolling mills of ArcelorMittal
Siemens has won an order to replace
existing DC main drives in finishing
mills with more powerful AC systems in the
ArcelorMittal plants in Dunkirk, France, and
Ghent, Belgium. The two projects are part
of comprehensive modernization plans for
boosting productivity and reducing costs,
within the scope of which the two hot rolling
mills are also to be modernized for the
processing of steel grades that demand
more sophisticated production technology.
The total Euro value of the contract is in
the mid two-digit-million range. The drives
will be modernized in several stages during
scheduled annual maintenance stoppages,
and completion is expected by the end of
2016. The first conversion work is planned for
late 2012 and subsequently on a yearly base.
In the finishing mills of the two hot rolling
mills of ArcelorMittal, a total of 13 stands
are to be modernized. Siemens will supply
the motors, converters and transformers for
this, and will handle installation supervision,
commissioning and customer training. To
achieve maximum possible standardization,
the same Sinamics SM150-based converter
technology will be used in both plants. In
Dunkirk, each stand has three DC machines
in series. Adapting the existing structural
environment presents a special challenge.
Siemens had to design a single AC motor
with a higher total power but outer dimensions
which makes the motor fit on the
same foundation as a single DC machine.
The solution is twelve-megawatt compact
machines, which will be used for the first
time.
The finishing line in Ghent has a 14 MW
pedestal bearing machine to meet higher
requirements regarding achievable rolling
torques. The modernization projects will be
carried out jointly by the Siemens Competence
Center for electrical and automation
engineering in the steel industry in Erlangen,
and Siemens Belgium.
The integrated production complexes
of ArcelorMittal Atlantique in Dunkirk, and
ArcelorMittal in Ghent, belong to the Flat
Carbon Europe Division. The Dunkirk site
has an annual capacity of 4.7 million t of
hot strip. An important customer for the
end products is the automobile industry.
Siemens will modernize the drives of seven
finishing stands here in a total of four steps.
Initial work on one of the mill stands is
planned for December 2012. ArcelorMittal
Ghent has a wide hot-strip mill and produces
around five million tons of flat steel
a year for applications in the automobile
industry and domestic appliance industries,
for example. In Ghent, a total of six finishing
stands will be modernized in three stages,
the first in December 2012 within just twelve
days shut down time.
Andritz to supply biomass boiler island to Sweden
International technology Group Andritz has
received an order from the municipal energy
company Karlstads Energi AB, Sweden, for
the supply of a new biomass-fueled boiler
for the Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
plant at Hedenverket for the end of 2014.
The scope of delivery includes the complete
boiler island (fuel bin to flue gas fan
outlet), based on Andritz’s well-proven Bubbling
Fluidized Bed (BFB) design and combining
high efficiency with excellent environmental
performance. The boiler will burn
wood-based fuels (logging waste, sawmill
chips, and bark), which are widely available
in the region, to generate steam at the rate
of 127 t/h, equal to 88 MW of thermal power.
According to Karlstads Energi, construction
of the new CHP facility will allow
the municipality to phase out all energy
production using fossil fuels and increase
production of electricity from renewable
resources. “The completion of this plant will
enable us to secure a long-term electricity
and district heating supply with sustainable
and renewable fuels using highly efficient
and environmentally friendly technology,”
says Mats Preger, CEO of Karlstads Energi.
ThyssenKrupp Steel to introduce shorttime
working from August 2012
Against the background of continuing
weak orders at ThyssenKrupp Steel
Europe AG, short-time working is being introduced
from August 2012. This has been
agreed between the works council and the
company. Short-time working will affect the
locations in Germany: Duisburg-Hamborn,
Duisburg-Hüttenheim, Bochum, Dortmund
and Siegerland. The Finnentrop location is initially
excluded from shorttime working. Over
the past few weeks the lower level of capacity
utilization has been offset initially using
instruments such as flexible working time
accounts, leave accounts and repair shifts.
As things stand at present the company
expects that short-time working will have to
be continued until the end of the year. Currently
affected by the temporary adjustment
measures are the cold-rolling and coating
areas and parts of the hotrolled processing
operations. Once the details of the short-time
working plans for August have been agreed
with the works councils, some 2,170 out of
a total of 17,500 employees are expected to
be affected by short-time working. Together
with the works councils, the company is looking
into carrying out skill-upgrading measures
during short-time working.
Eclipse opens new facility in India
Eclipse Inc. announced that it has
opened a newly constructed facility
in India. The new facility will replace the
company’s former operation in Pune, India.
The new facility is a modern state of
the art facility for production, engineering
and customer support. Expansion
in the marketplace has driven the need
to create a new facility in India which
is three times larger than the previous
operation. The operation employs
approximately forty members. The
facility is well located for efficient transportation
access.
Siempelkamp modernizes water-hydraulic presses in Russia
In April already JSC “Stupino Metallurgical
Company“ (SMK) placed an order with
Siempelkamp to modernize the waterhydraulic
control of a 100-MN press of
Schloemann make as well as to provide for
a corresponding new die-heating system.
Also for the modification of the water-hydraulic
control of a 46-MN closed-die forging
press into an open-die forging press SMK
decided in favour of the machine builder
as professional business partner located in
Krefeld, Germany.
SMK is one of the leading manufacturer
for products made of heat-resistant nickel
alloys and special steels for the Russian aircraft
industry: The Siempelkamp customer
makes parts for gas turbine drives. For its
location Stupino near Moscow SMK has
been now projecting modernization and
retrofit of existing plants: owing to the new
Siempelkamp hydraulic systems the customer
is able to provide for a more precise
control of the presses maintaining the central
water-hydraulic stations.
By means of the water-hydraulic control
especially developed for the modernization
of a 100-MN Schloemann press the moving
crosshead can be positioned more precisely
by up to rates of 0.15 mm/s. Additionally
the parallelism of the moving crosshead is
supported under all conditions of operation.
The innovative Siempelkamp system is also
beneficial for the following reason: special
curves for speed and pressure of the press
are programmed and subsequently stored
for individual products. During the forging
process a detailed report of the achieved
values that are subsequently filed is given
to the user.
Included in the modernization package
of the 100-MN press are the electric control
and a die heating system. The latter one is
completely integrated in the control keeping
the die at a constant temperature of
900 °C during the forging p ause. Through
the modernization process repeatability,
recording and filing of the actual forming
procedure is ensured. In addition to that the
production of work pieces made of granulated
heatresistant nickel alloys is enabled
through the technology “HIP + forming“.
For the modification of a 46-MN closeddie
forging press into an open-die forging
press Siempelkamp will also supply a new
water-hydraulic control as well as electric
control for the plant of Stupino. The opendie
forging press can subsequently make
up to 60 strokes per minute. Additionally
two rail-bound manipulators with rotary
table will be integrated into the installation.
For both modifications in the field of
water-hydraulic controls Siempelkamp relies
on the cooperation with Hauhinco Maschinenfabrik
G. Hausherr Jochums GmbH & Co.
KG in Sprockhövel. Hauhinco is one of the
leading system suppliers for water-hydraulic
systems, highpressure pumps, valves and
industrial components. The expert successfully
realized for instance the modernization
of the water hydraulics of the 500-MN
closed-die forging press at Alcoa Forging &
Extrusions in Cleveland, the biggest press in
the United States, in the year 2010.
Upon the signatures of the contract the
Siempelkamp engineers directly started
with the design works; commissioning of
both presses are scheduled for the end
of 2012. After completion of all works the
presses at SMK will meet with the strict
requirements of the aircraft industry. In
fact these presses will turn to new presses
– however at lower cost for project
realization that for a new plant. Owing to
this order, Siempelkamp demonstrates its
position as full-line supplier for press plants:
mechanics, hydraulics and electrics are all
from one source.
Spectro selected for award by trade magazines
Spectro was selected for the award by
four top trade magazines (Process, Process
Worldwide, PharmaTEC, and Laborpraxis)
from among 110 nominees, who
competed for awards in eleven categories.
Criteria for the award included the degree of
innovation, product quality and economic
feasibility for end users.
“With the SPECTROBLUE, we scored
points in every category,” explains Olaf
Schulz, who has responsibility for the Spectro
ICP spectrometer product line. Introduced
in 2011, the SPECTROBLUE ICP-OES spectrometer
targets mainly environmental laboratories
that need quick and accurate analysis
of water, wastewater, sewage sludge and soil
samples for toxic heavy metals.
SPECTROBLUE’s optical plasma interface
is especially innovative. As the excitation
source, the inductively coupled plasma
becomes extremely hot, ICP spectrometers
need cooling. “Previously ICP spectrometers
required an expensive water-cooled device
that is noisy, takes up valuable laboratory
space, and requires additional electricity and
servicing. With the innovative, engineers
devised a way to divert the heat away with
an air stream,” notes Mr. Schulz.
Posco has been named the world`s most competitive steelmaker
The World Steel Dynamics, a leading
agency specializing in the analysis of
the steelmaking industry, announced on
June 16 that Posco won the 1 st place in the
assessment of competitiveness of steelmakers
worldwide this year. In this year`s
assessment, it evaluated top 35 steelmakers
worldwide in terms of 23 criteria including
production output, profitability, technical
innovation, price power, cost-cutting measures,
financial soundness and securement of
raw materials. Posco won the highest scores
for high skill levels of its workforce, productivity,
and innovative technologies such
as radiating heat steel sheets for LED TVs,
Bismuth (Bi) free cutting steel and UV highgloss
steel plate. In addition, it received the
highest grades in the fields of expanding of
high value-added products and eco-friendly
management.
Posco held the top spot from 2002 to
2004 but was dethroned by its Russian and
Indian rivals that own iron ore mines such
as Severstal and Tata Steel. It reclaimed the
crown in six years in 2010 through its consistent
efforts for cost reduction, profitability
improvement, technological enhancement
and securement of iron ore mines and has
maintained the number one spot for three
consecutive years since then.
Russia`s Novolipetsk Steel took second
place in the latest rankings, followed by
Brazil`s CSN, Russia`s Severstal and China`s
Baoshan Iron and Steel. Meanwhile, Arcelor-
Mittal and JFE Steel which entered the top
10 rankings last year dropped to 16 th and 21 th
in the ranking respectively, due to the poor
performance in labor cost reduction and
exploration into emerging markets.
applications on the A350
and A380, including the largest extruded
lower-wing stringers for the A380; as well
as the largest wing skins and fuselage
panels for the A380 and structural plate
E.ON sells Open Grid Europe
E
.ON AG of Düsseldorf has sold Open Grid Europe, its
gas transmission company in Germany, to a consortium
consisting of Macquarie European Infrastructure
Fund 4, Infinity Investments, British Columbia Investment
Management Corporation, and MEAG Munich
ERGO Asset Management. The parties signed contracts
for the sale today. The agreed consideration is about
€2.9 billion which, including adjustments for pensions
and other assets, will result in a purchase price at
closing of about €3.2 billion. The transaction, which is
expected to close in the third quarter of 2012, requires
the approval of the German Federal Cartel Office and,
pursuant to the Foreign Trade and Payments Act, the
German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.
Essen-based Open Grid Europe operates Germany’s
largest gas transmission system (roughly 12,000 km in
length) and is a key European hub for bulk gas shipments
from Russia and Norway. It was formerly the
gas transmission division of E.ON Ruhrgas. To comply
with EU requirements, Open Grid Europe was fully
unbundled from its parent company in 2010 and set
up as an independent transmission operator.
The sale of Open Grid Europe brings E.ON closer to
its goal of generating roughly €15 billion through divestments
by the end of 2013. E.ON has already recorded
divestment proceeds totaling more than €12 billion.
E.ON will use the money to reduce its debt and invest
in growth businesses.
Waste air during the production process must, for example
meet and fulfil the strict standards of the “Technical Instructions
StrikoWestofen had successful business
year 2011
Thanks to products which meet the
global trend towards more efficient
and economic technologies, the Striko-
Westofen Group had a successful business
year 2011. At a profit margin of 7 % before
taxes, the international supplier of thermal
process technology increased its annual
sales in the field of light metal casting
by 34 percent to € 42 million. This allows
StrikoWestofen to exceed the overall
results for the sector considerably. Besides
highly efficient melting and dosing
systems, the expanded range of services
and spare parts in OEM quality has led
to an increased demand. With total sales
of 35 % outside of Europe, the group is
gaining global momentum and now has
locations on three continents. For this reason,
StrikoWestofen is increasing its workforce
considerably at its German location
and has now announced the relocation of
the company premises to neighbouring
Gummersbach.
Under foundry conditions, the new
StrikoMelter PurEfficiency aluminium melting
furnaces achieve consumption values
of only 525 kWh/t of material used. “With
excellent material yield and potential energy
savings of up to 40 % our StrikoMelter
PurEfficiency are benchmark worldwide,”
explains Rudolf Riedel, manager of the
StrikoWestofen Group. “We are optimally
meeting the needs of the international
markets. Now we offer a technology whose
operating costs can easily save five times
the overall investment costs over the entire
service life – in all sizes demanded.”
On the whole, the StrikoWestofen Group
profited from an increasing demand from
countries inside and outside of Europe. In the
past business year, the manufacturer achieved
35 % of total sales in Asia and America in
spite of the floundering economic situation in
both markets. “We will expand this share to 50
% by 2015,” says Mr. Riedel. “In particular our
internationally active customers appreciate if
we are in situ at all their locations with sales,
service and production, too.” In addition, the
importance of “Service and Spare Parts” grew
considerably in 2011. “The high availability,
quality and long service life of spare parts as
well as fire-proof materials in OEM quality is
a convincing proposition for our customers,”
explains Mr. Riedel.
dioxide pigment producer. The new
facilities are to be located in Jazan
Economic City, Saudi Arabia and are
scheduled for completion in 2014.
Ilmenite is an iron titanium oxide and
the primary ore of titanium.
Manufacture of the structures to
be delivered by Ruukki will mainly
take place at the Bolintin Deal plant
in Romania. Manufacture and deliveries
will start in autumn this year and
be completed during spring 2013.
„This is an important project for
us and one in which we can utilise
our special know-how since we are
to provide the frame and wall elements
as a joint delivery. In addition,
we have the advantage of good
logistics links provided by our plant
in Romania,“ says Sami Eronen, SVP,
Bodycote purchases endothermic
generator
Bodycote Thermal Processing purchased an AFC-Holcroft E-Z
Series 13,500-cfh endothermic generator for installation at
its Fort Wayne, Ind., plant.
The modular design of the E-Z Series generator enables
multiple units to be integrated for higher-capacity atmosphere
generation. In this case, an array of three 4,500-cfh
systems are integrated together to provide the needed
capacity while requiring less floor space than three standalone
units.
The atmosphere produced by the E-Z Series generator,
when enriched with natural gas, is suitable for gas carburizing
and carbon restoration of the low- and medium-carbon
steels. The addition of ammonia to the atmosphere will create
a suitable atmosphere for carbonitriding. The atmosphere, as
generated, may be used for clean annealing, normalizing and
hardening of all carbon steels.
Aluminium 2012 grows
with new themes
new location, new theme pavilions and
A a considerable increase in exhibition
area – the signs bode well for ALUMINIUM
World Trade Fair which will be held at the
Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre (Germany)
from 9 to 11 October. The change of location
from the Ruhr to the Rhine has already paid
off: The Aluminium is already larger than
the previous event two years ago in Essen,
Germany.
750 exhibitors from 40 countries have
booked their stands so far; among them
are the big key players like Alcoa, Constellium,
Hydro, Trimet, SMS, BWG or Sapa. Many
exhibitors have taken advantage of the
change in location to enlarge their stands.
Currently,organiser Reed Exhibitions records
a 20 % increase in area. With an exhibition
area of 75,000 m 2 the world fair thus continues
on its success course.
The Aluminium will allocate the halls
even more clearly to individual exhibition
segments than in the past. The trade fair
will follow the process chain, from primary
products and the associated technologies
(Hall 9) to casting and heat treatment as well
as recycling (Hall 10) and semi-finished products
(Halls 11 and 12) to surface treatment
(Hall 13) and
the themes of
metal working
welding
and joining
(Hall 14).
The excellent
capacity utilisation
currently
also reflected in the bookings for the five
theme pavilions and six national pavilions.
Among the largest joint pavilions is the
Chinese Pavilion. The range of country presentations
will be completed by the Danish
the French Pavilion and the Scandinavian
Pavilion.
The existing subdivision of the fair into
segments in the form of theme pavilions,
which was very well received by exhibitors
TT Expo: Heat Treatment
and related technologies
The 2 nd edition of TT EXPO, exhibition dedicated to
heat treatment and related technologies, is scheduled
at Piacenza Expo Exhibition Centre, Italy, from 15
to 17 November 2012.
Over 1.000 registered visitors, 40 exhibitors for more
than 50 brands, a full conference program: the results of
the first edition of TT EXPO, held in November 2010, had
met the operators and hinted at a great potential for the
second appointment. The echo of the good debut two
years ago has already been reflected in the wide interest
shown at both national and European level towards the
next edition.
Many important players - plant, machinery, materials,
components and technologies suppliers; heat treatment
operators; control and measure instrumentation suppliers;
pre-treatment and post-treatment finishing workers;
braze welding and PVD metal coating specialists
- have in fact already confirmed their participation at
TT EXPO 2012, an event that responds to the need for a
great place to meet, exchange and have a professional
development. Thanks to a varied conference program, it
intends to be a specialized container for all the protagonists
of this important manufacturing supply chain from
the technical, educational and cultural point of view.
Environmental sustainability, energy saving, process
innovations, new approaches and solutions against crisis:
all these topics will be discussed during conferences that
will be enriched by corporate meetings and workshops
for the presentation of well-advanced products and technologies.
The national and European supply chain of
heat treatments, which a number of industrial sectors
(such as general engineering, automotive, petroleum,
packaging, alternative energy) are interested in, has thus
found in TT EXPO its ideal structure thanks to its innovative
exhibition concept that companies appreciate as it
optimizes time and investments: short duration (only two
and a half days), low cost shell scheme stands, possibility
to organize workshops and presentations directly. For
Steel and its Heat Treatment
EFD Induction, together with other Sweden-based
companies, Sweden’s Royal
Institute of Technology and leading research
institute Swerea IVF, recently launched the
832-page book: Steel and its Heat Treatment
– a Handbook.
The new book is an English translation of
Stål och Värmebehandling, a handbook on
the topic of steel and heat treatment that has
established itself as essential reading in companies,
universities and research labs across
Sweden. The book covers everything from
metallography, grades of steel, heat treatment
processes and material testing to the
equipment used for heat treatment, associated
processes, safety and the environment.
A key writer on the project has been Kristian
Berggren, managing director of EFD
Induction in Sweden, who contributed to
the book’s section on induction hardening.
“The book,” says Berggren, “gives a fantastic
overview and understanding of heat
treatment, a topic still seen as some kind of
black magic, even tough the basic mechanisms
have been known for hundreds of
years!” Examples of heat treatment methods
covered in the book are: induction hardening,
case hardening, nitriding processes,
tempering and annealing.
The book is printed in full colour, and is
ideal as a practical guide, as well as an educational
resource for labs, companies and
research institutes. The new book, written by
Sweden’s top experts on the heat treatment
of steel, transforms theoretical insights into
practical, hands-on guidance.
