Rio GRANDE RivALRY
2012 Letterman Breakdown
The Rio Grande rivalry is a series between UNM and NMSU that
encompasses athletic teams for both programs. It began with the
2007-08 school year. The rivalry consists of a point-based competition
and is awarded to the school that accumulates the most
points from the matchups between the schools in various sports
each season. The victor each school year receives a rotating
trophy bearing the inscription of the annual winners. Saturday’s
football game is worth three points to the winning school.
UNM leads the 2012-13 series 3-0, winning 1.5 points each from
women’s golf and women’s soccer.
The Aggies’ 42-28 victory in Albuquerque last season was
NMSU’s largest margin of victory in 44 years and was the only
game during NMSU’s current three-game winning streak that
didn’t come down to the final moments. The Aggies beat UNM
16-14 in 2010 on a field goal with 1:56 left in the game in Las
Cruces. In 2009, the Lobos missed a 47-yard field goal as time
expired to preserve a 20-17 NMSU victory at University Stadium.
The Lobos won the previous six games in the series, only two of
which where decided by a touchdown or less. One of the onesided
UNM victories was a 53-0 shutout in the season finale of
2001 at University Stadium -- a game that was moved to the end
of the year because of 9/11. The game marked UNM’s biggest
margin of victory in the current millennium. NMSU came back
the next year in Las Cruces to beat the Lobos 24-13.
NMSU won two in a row from 1998-99 against UNM, both in
dramatic endings. In 1998, the Lobos ran a kickoff return for
a touchdown with 50 seconds left in the game but missed the
extra point for a 27-21 lead. The Aggies drove for the go-ahead
score in just 30 seconds and made good on their extra point for
a 28-27 win in Las Cruces.
Lobo All-American Brian Urlacher muffed a punt return in 1999
that led to NMSU’s go-ahead score in the fourth quarter in a
35-28 Aggies win at University Stadium.
UNM’s biggest win in the series came in 1948, a 61-0 victory
in Albuquerque. New Mexico State trumps that with a 110-3
squeaker in 1917 in Las Cruces.
The University of New Mexico football
team had a 2.66 grade-point average
in the spring of 2012 in coach Bob Davie’s
first full semester.
The average was a .42 improvement
from the fall of 2010.
