Health Awareness Camp<br />
Govindrao Nikam College of Pharmacy<br />
had organized a Health campaign on 8 th<br />
of January highlighting various facets of<br />
diabetes, tuberculosis and asthma. It was<br />
organized in a local school and saw the<br />
participation of both students and their<br />
parents. Charts and A.V clips were used<br />
to present the cause in a more effective<br />
manner. The causes, symptoms, and<br />
treatment of these diseases was discussed.<br />
The effort was appreciated by the people.<br />

An Entrepreneurship Institute of India<br />
sponsored “Entrepreneurship Awareness<br />
Camp” was held at Sree Siddaganga<br />

from 22 nd to 24 th of December, 2011. In<br />
the inaugural session of the camp, Dr. S.<br />

saw the presence of many eminent speakers<br />

Annual Social gathering<br />
‘Kshitij-2011’<br />
JSPM’s Charak College of Pharmacy<br />
and Research, Wagholi had organized<br />
an annual social gathering ‘Kshitij-2011’<br />
between 28 th Nov. to 2 nd Dec. The motto<br />
of the gathering was to expertise the<br />
students in event management, decision<br />
making capability, mass communication,<br />
hidden talent identification, interpersonal<br />
relationship establishment, delegation and<br />
subordination, improving communication<br />
skills and developing their personality.<br />
Competitions like sculpture from medicinal<br />
product, drug art gallery, and prescription<br />
collage, GMP model from sticks, nutraceutical<br />
salad decoration, cosmeceutical hair style,<br />
leaflet with drawing and painting, mehendi<br />
and rangoli competition were organized.<br />
Various indoor and out door games were<br />
conducted.<br />
Dr.B.N.Sinha, Professor and Head,<br />
Department of <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> Sciences,<br />
Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra,<br />
Ranchi was invited by the organizers<br />
of EU - India Science and Technology<br />
Cooperation Days, 2011 at Vienna,<br />
Austria during 01-02 December, 2011<br />
to deliver a talk on his project that was<br />
funded by the New INDIGO Networking<br />
Pilot Program. The event was jointly<br />
organized by three EU funded projects,<br />
EUINEC, New INDIGO and INDIA GATE<br />
and hosted by the Austrian Federal<br />
Ministry of Science and Research.<br />
About 150 stakeholders from Europe<br />
and India, scientists, policy makers as<br />
well as industry representatives were the<br />
distinguished participants. Mr. Arijit Basu,<br />
his co-researcher and Asst. Professor at<br />
the Dept. of <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> Sciences,<br />
BIT, Ranchi also presented a poster at<br />

Plantation and Community<br />
Harmony Drive<br />
On the eve of 62nd Republic Day, the<br />
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) students<br />
of Annamalai University planted 62 different<br />
saplings in the campus. In the recent<br />
devastating cyclonic storm ‘Thane’, huge<br />
numbers of trees were damaged and<br />
uprooted resulting in environmental loss.<br />
This attempt of the students’ plantation was<br />
to contribute promoting ecological balance.<br />
The whole programme was organized by<br />
the University’s NSS Unit No. 10 under the<br />
leadership of Professor V. K. Kalaichelvan.<br />
The Pharm. D. Faculty members led by<br />
Professor R. Manavalan, Professor P. K.<br />
Manna and Professor G. P. Mohanta too<br />
participated and encouraged the students<br />

Various health awareness programs,<br />

elocution, debate, essay writing competition<br />
were conducted. The main emphasis<br />
was on spreading awareness about<br />
Health & sanitation, counseling regarding<br />
communicable diseases, cleanliness habits<br />
& the role of pharmacist in maintaining<br />
general health & hygiene. The main event<br />
Dengue Prevention Program was organized<br />
with the co-operation of Health Department,<br />
Govt. of Rajasthan. The Anti Dengue Drug<br />
“TEMIFOSS” was added in appropriate<br />

Endowment Oration<br />
The Professor Prem Chand Dandiya<br />
Endowment Trust organized the 20th<br />
Annual Oration on February 4th, 2012 at<br />
S.M.S Medical College, Jaipur. The oration<br />
was delivered by Dr. G.G. Mansharamani,<br />
Sr. Consultant and Former Professor and<br />
Head of Medicine, at Maulana Azad Medical<br />
College, New Delhi and also at JIPMER,<br />
Pondicherry. Professor Mansharamani<br />
spoke on ‘Medicine for elderly-ADRs’.<br />
He emphasized on both socioeconomic<br />
considerations and reluctance of elderly<br />
population in revealing the health problems<br />
and taking medications as serious concerns.<br />
He shared his four decades of experiences<br />
in a major Government Hospital in New<br />
Delhi. Professor S.K. Kulkarni, Director<br />
Bombay College of Pharmacy chaired<br />
the function and made a presentation on<br />
the demographics of elderly in India and<br />
the alarming healthcare situations for<br />
the elderly. He touched on the issues<br />
of access to medicines in rural elderly in<br />
India. Professor J.S. Bapna, Chairman of<br />
the PCDE Trust gave a brief background<br />
of the trust and the CME on ‘Access to<br />
medicines in Elderly’. The PCDE Trust<br />
also gave their biennial prizes. Dr. Dinesh<br />
Dingra, Associate Professor, GJU Hissar<br />
was awarded Chandra Kanta Dandiya prize<br />
for the best publication in Pharmacology.<br />
Dr.Shushma Talegaonkar, of Jamia<br />
Hamdard, New Delhi was given Motan<br />
Devi Dandiya Prize for the best publication<br />
in Pharmacy. The award consisted of prize<br />

Celebration<br />
The 50th (Golden Jubilee) National<br />
Pharmacy Week (NPW) was celebrated<br />
in SJM College of Pharmacy, Karnataka<br />
from 20th to 26th Nov., 2011. As a part of<br />
the celebration, tuberculosis Awareness<br />
Programme was conducted which included<br />
a small skit on T.B. awareness. A rally was<br />
also organized by the college staff to spread<br />
awareness about safe and appropriate use<br />
of medications and thus explaining the<br />
importance of pharmacist in the healthcare<br />
system. A poster session on fundamentals<br />
of organic chemistry was organized by the<br />
department of pharmaceutical chemistry,<br />

Celebrations – 2011<br />
On account of 50th National Pharmacy<br />
Week Celebrations 2011, Periyar College<br />
of <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> sciences, Trichy<br />
conducted week long programmes from<br />
21st – 27th Nove. 2011. A Pharma Rally was<br />
conducted by the students with the theme<br />
of “Pharmacist: A Health Care Professional”<br />
on 22nd Nov, 2011. The celebrations<br />
also saw a Pharma Quiz being organized<br />
for the students and a free diabetes<br />
screening camp orranged by National<br />
Service Scheme at Periyar Maniammai Free<br />
Clinic. Lectures on “Career Development for<br />
Pharma Students” and “Biomedical waste<br />
Management in Academic and Clinical<br />
Setting” were organized for the students.<br />
The celebrations were concluded with<br />
a book fair which benefitted school and<br />

the National Pharmacy Week 2011<br />
from 26 th Dec 2011 to 31 st Dec 2011.<br />
Inauguration ceremony was held on<br />
26 th Dec 2011 in the presence of Shree<br />
Sudhir Anna Patil, Executive President,<br />
A.S.P.M, Osmanabad and A.S. Dhaktode,<br />
Civil Surgeon, Osmanabad. Lectures on<br />
the “Field of Management” and “Disaster<br />
Management” were delivered by noted<br />
speakers. Blood donation camp was<br />
organized wherein haemoglobin and blood<br />
group checkup was organized. Eighty six<br />
volunteers donated their blood. On 28 th Dec<br />
2011, one day workshop was organized on<br />
the theme ‘Recent trends in <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong><br />
sciences’. Several scientific sessions were<br />
held during the entire day. Lectures on<br />
Proteomics, Research Paper Writing and<br />
Patent Filing Procedure were delivered by<br />
resource persons. A Pharma exhibition<br />
was organized wherein pharma machinery<br />
and different instruments were displayed<br />
and their working was shown. A Pharma<br />
rally, Pharma quiz competition and Poster<br />
presentation were organized.<br />
MCOPS IHPA Conference<br />
The 48 th Annual Conference of <strong>Indian</strong><br />
Hospital Pharmacists’ <strong>Association</strong> (IHPA)<br />
was held at MCOPS on 18 th and 19 th<br />
February 2012. The conference was<br />
inaugurated on the 18 th in the presence<br />
of Dr. H Vinod Bhat (Pro-Vice Chancellor,<br />
Manipal University), Mr. M V Kamath (senior<br />
journalist), Dr. R R Pulgaonkar (Medical<br />
Superintendent), Mr. S L Nasa (President,<br />
IHPA) and Mr. A K Adhikari (Treasurer,<br />
IHPA). Dr. N Udupa (principal, MCOPS<br />
and Organising Secretary) welcomed<br />
the gathering. IHPA office bearers who<br />
have contributed to the growth of the<br />
association were felicitated on the occasion.<br />
This included Mr. S L Nasa and Mr. A K<br />
Adhikari. Ms. Piya Mudgal conducted the<br />
inaugural programme. Dr. Unnikrishnan<br />
proposed a vote of thanks. Noted speakers<br />
delivered lectures on topics like “Role of<br />
pharmacists in healthcare”, “Challenges in<br />
Pharmacy Practice Education”, ”Problem of<br />
medication errors in intensive care units”,<br />
“Pharmacovigilance and the challenges<br />
faced in our country” and “Outcome<br />
Research”. Posters were presented.At the<br />
valedictory function, certificates were given<br />

The 50 th NPW was celebrated by Jeypore<br />
College of Pharmacy from 20 th Nov 2011<br />
to 27 th Nov 2011. A variety of competitions<br />
in various disciplines were conducted.A<br />
Pharma Rally was organized and a<br />
memorandum of professional activities<br />
of pharmacists with the need for safe<br />
use of medicines and the importance of<br />
pharmacists in health care system was<br />
handed over to the sub-collector and District<br />
Magistrate, Jeypore. A free health camp<br />
was organized in the college premises. At<br />
the valedictory function, the chief guest, Dr.<br />
Namporthi, Director presented a detailed<br />
account on the importance of herbal<br />
medicines. Prof. R.Shanmuga Sundaram,<br />
Principal proposed the vote of thanks. The<br />
university rank holders and class toppers<br />
were honoured with medals, mementos<br />
and certificates. Prizes and trophies<br />
were distributed to the winners of various<br />
competitions. Cultural programme was also<br />

The Indo-US joint symposium on<br />
“NANOMEDICINE: PROSPECTS AND<br />
CHALLENGES” was organized on<br />
November 14 & 15, 2011, at the Institute<br />
of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai by<br />
the Department of <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> Sciences<br />
and Technology and supported by the Indo-<br />
US Science and Technology Forum. Prof.<br />
Padma Devarajan of ICT and Prof. Vinod<br />
Labhasetwar of Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland,<br />
Ohio, USA, were the Coordinators of<br />
the joint symposium and Prof. Vandana<br />
Patravale, ICT chaired the symposium’s<br />
Scientific and Organizing Committee. Prof.<br />

Dance routine on the symposium theme,<br />
‘A Nanochronicle’ - which depicted the<br />
extension of nano from the <strong>Indian</strong> bhasma<br />
to the austere focus of nanotoxicity. Overall,<br />
the nanomedicine symposia included<br />
several areas – synthesis of different<br />
nanomaterials, diverse approaches of<br />
targeting nanomaterials, delivery of different<br />
types of therapeutics, and many additional<br />

The Annual Industry Institute Interaction<br />
of the Industry Institute Partnership Cell<br />
(IIPC) of MCOPS on 27th January, 2012.<br />
Dr. N Udupa, the principal welcomed the<br />
participants and gave an overview of the<br />
AICTE-supported IIPC. The aim of the cell<br />
was bridge the gap between academic<br />
curriculum and industry expectation. Lecturer<br />

and evaluation of nasal spray products”<br />

MCOPS Alumni Meet was held on 28<br />
January, 2012. Dr. N Udupa addressed<br />
the alumni. Tracing the progress of<br />
the institution since its inception, he<br />
told them that MCOPS is celebrating<br />
the Golden Jubilee Year with a slew of<br />
activities, including academic (conventions,<br />
workshops) and others (T20 cricket league<br />

The Golden Jubilee Celebrations of MCOPS<br />
