Health Awareness Camp
Govindrao Nikam College of Pharmacy
had organized a Health campaign on 8 th
of January highlighting various facets of
diabetes, tuberculosis and asthma. It was
organized in a local school and saw the
participation of both students and their
parents. Charts and A.V clips were used
to present the cause in a more effective
manner. The causes, symptoms, and
treatment of these diseases was discussed.
The effort was appreciated by the people.

Camp
An Entrepreneurship Institute of India
sponsored “Entrepreneurship Awareness
Camp” was held at Sree Siddaganga
College of Pharmacy, Tumkur, Karnataka
from 22 nd to 24 th of December, 2011. In
the inaugural session of the camp, Dr. S.
Badami welcomed the gathering, Sri TM
Swamy, MD, Gowrishankar chemicals pvt.
ltd., Tiptur was the Chief Guest. The camp
saw the presence of many eminent speakers

Annual Social gathering
‘Kshitij-2011’
JSPM’s Charak College of Pharmacy
and Research, Wagholi had organized
an annual social gathering ‘Kshitij-2011’
between 28 th Nov. to 2 nd Dec. The motto
of the gathering was to expertise the
students in event management, decision
making capability, mass communication,
hidden talent identification, interpersonal
relationship establishment, delegation and
subordination, improving communication
skills and developing their personality.
Competitions like sculpture from medicinal
product, drug art gallery, and prescription
collage, GMP model from sticks, nutraceutical
salad decoration, cosmeceutical hair style,
leaflet with drawing and painting, mehendi
and rangoli competition were organized.
Various indoor and out door games were
conducted.
Dr.B.N.Sinha, Professor and Head,
Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences,
Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra,
Ranchi was invited by the organizers
of EU - India Science and Technology
Cooperation Days, 2011 at Vienna,
Austria during 01-02 December, 2011
to deliver a talk on his project that was
funded by the New INDIGO Networking
Pilot Program. The event was jointly
organized by three EU funded projects,
EUINEC, New INDIGO and INDIA GATE
and hosted by the Austrian Federal
Ministry of Science and Research.
About 150 stakeholders from Europe
and India, scientists, policy makers as
well as industry representatives were the
distinguished participants. Mr. Arijit Basu,
his co-researcher and Asst. Professor at
the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences,
BIT, Ranchi also presented a poster at
the event.

contributing to the world health scenario

and General Hospital, Gulbarga. During
his lectures he emphasized for the better
growth of Kenya by taking the help
of Indian Institutions. He thanked the

Annamalai University
Plantation and Community
Harmony Drive
On the eve of 62nd Republic Day, the
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) students
of Annamalai University planted 62 different
saplings in the campus. In the recent
devastating cyclonic storm ‘Thane’, huge
numbers of trees were damaged and
uprooted resulting in environmental loss.
This attempt of the students’ plantation was
to contribute promoting ecological balance.
The whole programme was organized by
the University’s NSS Unit No. 10 under the
leadership of Professor V. K. Kalaichelvan.
The Pharm. D. Faculty members led by
Professor R. Manavalan, Professor P. K.
Manna and Professor G. P. Mohanta too
participated and encouraged the students
in this noble cause. In addition, the students
too participated in a two wheeler rally from
Annamalai University to Sriperumbudur
(Rajiv Gandhi’s assassinated place),
covering a distance of 280 km, sensitizing
communities on need of non-violence
and communal harmony promoting world
peace.

were conducted. The main emphasis
was on spreading awareness about
Health & sanitation, counseling regarding
communicable diseases, cleanliness habits
& the role of pharmacist in maintaining
general health & hygiene. The main event
Dengue Prevention Program was organized
with the co-operation of Health Department,
Govt. of Rajasthan. The Anti Dengue Drug
“TEMIFOSS” was added in appropriate
doses in open water tanks of public.

20th Prem Chand Dandiya
Endowment Oration
The Professor Prem Chand Dandiya
Endowment Trust organized the 20th
Annual Oration on February 4th, 2012 at
S.M.S Medical College, Jaipur. The oration
was delivered by Dr. G.G. Mansharamani,
Sr. Consultant and Former Professor and
Head of Medicine, at Maulana Azad Medical
College, New Delhi and also at JIPMER,
Pondicherry. Professor Mansharamani
spoke on ‘Medicine for elderly-ADRs’.
He emphasized on both socioeconomic
considerations and reluctance of elderly
population in revealing the health problems
and taking medications as serious concerns.
He shared his four decades of experiences
in a major Government Hospital in New
Delhi. Professor S.K. Kulkarni, Director
Bombay College of Pharmacy chaired
the function and made a presentation on
the demographics of elderly in India and
the alarming healthcare situations for
the elderly. He touched on the issues
of access to medicines in rural elderly in
India. Professor J.S. Bapna, Chairman of
the PCDE Trust gave a brief background
of the trust and the CME on ‘Access to
medicines in Elderly’. The PCDE Trust
also gave their biennial prizes. Dr. Dinesh
Dingra, Associate Professor, GJU Hissar
was awarded Chandra Kanta Dandiya prize
for the best publication in Pharmacology.
Dr.Shushma Talegaonkar, of Jamia
Hamdard, New Delhi was given Motan
Devi Dandiya Prize for the best publication
in Pharmacy. The award consisted of prize
of Rs. 10,000/- each and citation.

Celebration
The 50th (Golden Jubilee) National
Pharmacy Week (NPW) was celebrated
in SJM College of Pharmacy, Karnataka
from 20th to 26th Nov., 2011. As a part of
the celebration, tuberculosis Awareness
Programme was conducted which included
a small skit on T.B. awareness. A rally was
also organized by the college staff to spread
awareness about safe and appropriate use
of medications and thus explaining the
importance of pharmacist in the healthcare
system. A poster session on fundamentals
of organic chemistry was organized by the
department of pharmaceutical chemistry,
SJM College of Pharmacy, on 25th
November, 2011. Dr. Srinivas Muthalik,

Celebrations – 2011
On account of 50th National Pharmacy
Week Celebrations 2011, Periyar College
of Pharmaceutical sciences, Trichy
conducted week long programmes from
21st – 27th Nove. 2011. A Pharma Rally was
conducted by the students with the theme
of “Pharmacist: A Health Care Professional”
on 22nd Nov, 2011. The celebrations
also saw a Pharma Quiz being organized
for the students and a free diabetes
screening camp orranged by National
Service Scheme at Periyar Maniammai Free
Clinic. Lectures on “Career Development for
Pharma Students” and “Biomedical waste
Management in Academic and Clinical
Setting” were organized for the students.
The celebrations were concluded with
a book fair which benefitted school and
college students alike.

the National Pharmacy Week 2011
from 26 th Dec 2011 to 31 st Dec 2011.
Inauguration ceremony was held on
26 th Dec 2011 in the presence of Shree
Sudhir Anna Patil, Executive President,
A.S.P.M, Osmanabad and A.S. Dhaktode,
Civil Surgeon, Osmanabad. Lectures on
the “Field of Management” and “Disaster
Management” were delivered by noted
speakers. Blood donation camp was
organized wherein haemoglobin and blood
group checkup was organized. Eighty six
volunteers donated their blood. On 28 th Dec
2011, one day workshop was organized on
the theme ‘Recent trends in Pharmaceutical
sciences’. Several scientific sessions were
held during the entire day. Lectures on
Proteomics, Research Paper Writing and
Patent Filing Procedure were delivered by
resource persons. A Pharma exhibition
was organized wherein pharma machinery
and different instruments were displayed
and their working was shown. A Pharma
rally, Pharma quiz competition and Poster
presentation were organized.
MCOPS IHPA Conference
The 48 th Annual Conference of Indian
Hospital Pharmacists’ Association (IHPA)
was held at MCOPS on 18 th and 19 th
February 2012. The conference was
inaugurated on the 18 th in the presence
of Dr. H Vinod Bhat (Pro-Vice Chancellor,
Manipal University), Mr. M V Kamath (senior
journalist), Dr. R R Pulgaonkar (Medical
Superintendent), Mr. S L Nasa (President,
IHPA) and Mr. A K Adhikari (Treasurer,
IHPA). Dr. N Udupa (principal, MCOPS
and Organising Secretary) welcomed
the gathering. IHPA office bearers who
have contributed to the growth of the
association were felicitated on the occasion.
This included Mr. S L Nasa and Mr. A K
Adhikari. Ms. Piya Mudgal conducted the
inaugural programme. Dr. Unnikrishnan
proposed a vote of thanks. Noted speakers
delivered lectures on topics like “Role of
pharmacists in healthcare”, “Challenges in
Pharmacy Practice Education”, ”Problem of
medication errors in intensive care units”,
“Pharmacovigilance and the challenges
faced in our country” and “Outcome
Research”. Posters were presented.At the
valedictory function, certificates were given
away to the participants.

The 50 th NPW was celebrated by Jeypore

to 27 th Nov 2011. A variety of competitions

Pharma Rally was organized and a
memorandum of professional activities
of pharmacists with the need for safe
use of medicines and the importance of
pharmacists in health care system was
handed over to the sub-collector and District
Magistrate, Jeypore. A free health camp
was organized in the college premises. At
the valedictory function, the chief guest, Dr.
Namporthi, Director presented a detailed
account on the importance of herbal
medicines. Prof. R.Shanmuga Sundaram,
Principal proposed the vote of thanks. The
university rank holders and class toppers
were honoured with medals, mementos
and certificates. Prizes and trophies
were distributed to the winners of various
competitions. Cultural programme was also

One day National Symposium on “Pharmacy
Profession: Career Challenges and
Opportunities” ‘was organised at Sharad
Pawar College of Pharmacy, Wanadongri,
Nagpur on 7 th January. The Symposium was
inaugurated by Dr. Ajay Mehta, renowned
Oncology surgeon and Director, Central india
Cancer Research Institute. In his inaugural
address Dr. Mehta, delivered a lecture on
“Recent trends in Cancer Research” and
explained how to start research in cancer
with his innovative ideas. Mr. Roshan
Palewar, Project Manager, Wokhardt
Pharmaceuticals, Aurangabad explained
the various aspects which are important for
successful career, newer opportunities and
urged the students to develop special skills.
Dr. suchitra Mehta, Psycho-oncologist and
Trustee, Central India Cancer Research
Institute delivered a lecture on Awareness
of Cancer and its after-effects. Dr. M. K.
Kale, Convener elaborated on the career
prospects in pharmaceutical sciences and
urged the students to acquire soft skills,
technical skills and to work with sincerity,
honesty and dedication. The Symposium
was attended by a large number of UG and
PG students.

Indo-US Joint Symposium on
“Nanomedicine: Prospects and
Challenges”
The Indo-US joint symposium on
“NANOMEDICINE: PROSPECTS AND
CHALLENGES” was organized on
November 14 & 15, 2011, at the Institute
of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai by
the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences
and Technology and supported by the Indo-
US Science and Technology Forum. Prof.
Padma Devarajan of ICT and Prof. Vinod
Labhasetwar of Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland,
Ohio, USA, were the Coordinators of
the joint symposium and Prof. Vandana
Patravale, ICT chaired the symposium’s
Scientific and Organizing Committee. Prof.
K.G.Akamanchi, Dean, Research welcomed
the delegates. Padmavibhushan Prof.
M.M. Sharma, former Director of ICT, an
internationally noted Chemical Engineer
and Fellow of the Royal Society was the
Chief Guest and spoke about India’s
ancient Ayurvedic system of medicine
including Bhasma in which colloidal metal
nanoparticles are used in the treatment of
various ailments.
The symposium hosted invited talks
by scientists from both India and USA
covering an extensive range of pioneering

Students of ICT presented a Mime and
Dance routine on the symposium theme,
‘A Nanochronicle’ - which depicted the
extension of nano from the Indian bhasma
to the austere focus of nanotoxicity. Overall,
the nanomedicine symposia included
several areas – synthesis of different
nanomaterials, diverse approaches of
targeting nanomaterials, delivery of different
types of therapeutics, and many additional
applications.

safer medicines. He further added that

of Fluid Bed Processing, basics of Wruster
Coating and common problems that occur

(AVL) explained about innovative packaging
solutions such as totally atomized non-touch
techniques of carton filling and labelling ,
sachets counting, tube filling , shrink wrap

The Annual Industry Institute Interaction
of the Industry Institute Partnership Cell
(IIPC) of MCOPS on 27th January, 2012.
Dr. N Udupa, the principal welcomed the
participants and gave an overview of the
AICTE-supported IIPC. The aim of the cell
was bridge the gap between academic
curriculum and industry expectation. Lecturer
on “R & D linking to Industry”, “Selection
and evaluation of nasal spray products”
and “Pharmaceutical product development
and stability studies” were delivered by
distinguished guests. Dr. Khanna and
Dr.Rajendran were the moderators during
the presentations. After the presentations,
there was a panel discussion during
which Pharm D, B Pharm and M Pharm
students put several questions to the panel

competition “Avishkar 2011-12” organized

research poster entitled “Herbal control
of Mosquito Larvae” in field of Agriculture
and Animal Husbandry was presented by
Ms. Jyoti s. Shinde and Ms. Sneha C.
Wankhede, students of final year B. Pharm

bagged the first prize.

Commission for carrying out post doctoral
work on nano-medicines. His current
interest lies in Nanotechnology products
for brain delivery, nanoherbal formulations,
controlled release formulations and
targeted drug delivery specifically for brain
and colon. Besides he is also working on
amalgamation of herbal medicinal plants
with modern therapeutics. He has been
granted projects from agencies like DBT,
CCRUM, AYUSH, UGC, DST and FIP etc.
