<strong>The</strong> 4 th <strong>IPA</strong> <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Congress</strong><br />
Feb 18-19, 2012,<br />
St. Peter’s Institute of <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> Sciences, Hanamkonda, Warangal<br />
<strong>The</strong> 4 th <strong>Indian</strong> <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> Association <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Congress</strong><br />
was held under the auspices of the <strong>IPA</strong> Education Division and<br />
<strong>IPA</strong> Hanamkonda Local Branch at the St. Peter’s Institution of<br />
<strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> Sciences on Feb 18 and 19, 2012. <strong>The</strong> event<br />
actually started with a pre-conference workshop on “Leaders in<br />
Training (LIT)” on 17 th Feb 2012. LIT Program is meant for igniting<br />
the minds of young pharmacists to become future leaders of<br />
pharmacy profession. <strong>The</strong> workshop was inaugurated by Prof. T.<br />
V. Narayana, Chairman <strong>IPA</strong> Education Division, in the presence<br />
of Mr. T. Jayapal Reddy, Chairman, Dr. Rao V. S. V. Vadlamudi,<br />
Director and Dr. Suresh Bandari, Principal, St. Peter’s Inst. of<br />
Pharm. Sciences. <strong>The</strong> LIT main session started in the morning<br />
by JC A. V. Vamana Kumar, a JCI International Award winner for<br />
outstanding trainer Globally in 2007. His unique and indomitable<br />
style of delivery captured the audience with great enthusiasm. <strong>The</strong><br />
training session was well received by the audience comprising<br />
of more than 300 students and teachers from various pharmacy<br />
colleges across the country.<br />
On the morning of 18 th Feb 2012, the <strong>IPA</strong> <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Congress</strong><br />
inauguration function started with a large enthusiastic student<br />
gathering of over 3,500 along with eminent scientists, academicians,<br />
CEOs of <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> Companies, who were all welcomed by<br />
and Contributions of <strong>Indian</strong> Scientists for the success of global<br />
<strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> Industries. He pointed out that <strong>Indian</strong>s were the<br />
innovators in all fields of science including medicine, but with in India<br />
lost the race due to the lack of motivation and innovative spirit. Dr.<br />
J. Venkateswara Rao, Secretary of LOC thanked the organizers,<br />
participants, guests and delegates, volunteers and all suppliers<br />
and vendors for their role in making the 4 th <strong>IPA</strong> student congress<br />
a huge success. Following the inauguration, a plenary lecture<br />
on ‘Entrepreneurship<br />
for Pharmacy <strong>Student</strong>s’<br />

Prof. T. V. Narayana, Chairman, Education Division, <strong>IPA</strong>. Firstly the<br />
Chairman of the LOC of 4 th <strong>IPA</strong> <strong>Student</strong> congress, Sri T. Jayapal<br />
Reddy, addressed the gathering followed by Prof. K. Chinna<br />
Swamy, Dr. M. Sheshu Madav, President IMA, Warangal, Prof. A.<br />
Raghuram Rao, Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy of Kakatiya University,<br />
Mr. C. Ratan, Chairperson, <strong>IPA</strong> SF and Sri. Ch. Malla Reddy. <strong>The</strong><br />
congress souvenir and abstracts book was released by Mr. J. A.<br />
S. Giri and Mr. S. D. Joag, Hon. Secretary, <strong>IPA</strong>. <strong>The</strong> student forum<br />
magazine Panache was then released by the chief guest Dr. Krishna<br />
Ella. Dr. C. Gopalakrishna Murthy, President, <strong>IPA</strong>, presided over<br />
the function and expressed his appreciation towards the pharmacy<br />
institutions situated in Warangal region in starting their own local<br />
<strong>IPA</strong> branch and for opting to organize such a huge event. While<br />
inaugurating the congress, he recited a few Sanskrit verses from<br />
Vedas to motivate and encourage the huge gathering of students at<br />
the congress and received a large applause from the students.<br />
Dr. Krishna Ella, Chief Guest of the congress delivered<br />
the keynote address of the <strong>Congress</strong> on Innovation, Patenting<br />
in various areas of pharmaceutical sciences. In the evening of<br />
the first day of student congress, a mega cultural event was<br />
organized featuring Mr. Srirama Chandra, the <strong>Indian</strong> Idol, who<br />
enthralled the audience with his performance. <strong>The</strong> other highlights<br />

of the cultural event are songs by Mr. K. Dinkar, alumnus of St.<br />
Peter’s Institute and a film singer, who composed and sung the<br />
first ever Pharmacy Anthem (available at http://www.youtube.com/<br />
watch?v=tDX5xb4iYlo) and dance and song sequences by students<br />
of various pharmacy colleges.<br />
<strong>The</strong> second day of the 4 th <strong>IPA</strong> <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Congress</strong> began with a<br />
session on ‘Evidence-based Pharmacy Education’ in which Prof.<br />
G. Parthasarathy, Professor of Pharmacy practice, JSS College of<br />
Pharmacy, Mysore spoke on “Evidence-based Pharmacy Practice”.<br />
Speaking next on “Evidence-based Pharmacy Education-Impact on<br />
Regulatory Affairs”, Dr. A. Ramkishan, Assistant Drug Controller,<br />
CDSCO, Ahmedabad elaborated on the responsibilities of regulatory<br />
affairs. Prof. B. Suresh, President, Pharmacy Council of India and<br />
Vice Chancellor, JSS University, Mysore delivered a keynote<br />
address on the theme “Evidence-based Pharmacy Education”,<br />
in which he explained about the changes pharmacy education<br />
system is undergoing and also about the increased employment<br />
opportunities in the pharmacy sector. He also expressed his views<br />
about implementation of the pharmacovigilance program and the<br />
role a hospital pharmacist can play in the health care sector. Prof.<br />
Suresh appreciated St. Peter’s Institute of <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> Sciences<br />
and the Co-hosting pharmacy institutions in Andhra Pradesh as well<br />
as in the Country for conducting and supporting the 4 th <strong>IPA</strong> <strong>Student</strong><br />
<strong>Congress</strong> with great enthusiasm. He expressed his happiness for<br />
being able to come to Warangal and participate in the congress<br />
despite his hectic schedule. Dr. K. P. R. Chowdary, Director, Vikas<br />
College of Pharmacy, Rajahmundry chaired the theme session and<br />
gave concluding remarks.<br />
In the valedictory function, Prof. Sayalu, Registrar, Kakatiya<br />
University, Prof. C. Veeresham, Principal, University College<br />
of Pharmacy, KU appreciated the efforts of the local organizing<br />
committee, participating students for making the student congress<br />
a huge success. Prof. T. V. Narayana, Chairman, <strong>IPA</strong> Education<br />
Division thanked all the institutions, delegates, speakers, members<br />
of the LOC, <strong>IPA</strong> <strong>Student</strong> forum members, volunteers and students for<br />
their contribution in making the <strong>Congress</strong> a grand success. During<br />
the valedictory the organizers felicitated Prof. K. Chinnaswamy,<br />
Prof. Y. Madhusudan Rao and Prof. Malla Reddy and other<br />
dignitaries. Prof. B Suresh, President, PCI, gave away prizes to the<br />
students who made best oral and poster presentations.<br />
