The 4 th IPA Student Congress

The 4 th Indian Pharmaceutical Association Student Congress
was held under the auspices of the IPA Education Division and
IPA Hanamkonda Local Branch at the St. Peter’s Institution of
Pharmaceutical Sciences on Feb 18 and 19, 2012. The event
actually started with a pre-conference workshop on “Leaders in
Training (LIT)” on 17 th Feb 2012. LIT Program is meant for igniting
the minds of young pharmacists to become future leaders of
pharmacy profession. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. T.
V. Narayana, Chairman IPA Education Division, in the presence
of Mr. T. Jayapal Reddy, Chairman, Dr. Rao V. S. V. Vadlamudi,
Director and Dr. Suresh Bandari, Principal, St. Peter’s Inst. of
Pharm. Sciences. The LIT main session started in the morning
by JC A. V. Vamana Kumar, a JCI International Award winner for
outstanding trainer Globally in 2007. His unique and indomitable
style of delivery captured the audience with great enthusiasm. The
training session was well received by the audience comprising
of more than 300 students and teachers from various pharmacy
colleges across the country.
On the morning of 18 th Feb 2012, the IPA Student Congress
inauguration function started with a large enthusiastic student
gathering of over 3,500 along with eminent scientists, academicians,
CEOs of Pharmaceutical Companies, who were all welcomed by
and Contributions of Indian Scientists for the success of global
Pharmaceutical Industries. He pointed out that Indians were the
innovators in all fields of science including medicine, but with in India
lost the race due to the lack of motivation and innovative spirit. Dr.
J. Venkateswara Rao, Secretary of LOC thanked the organizers,
participants, guests and delegates, volunteers and all suppliers
and vendors for their role in making the 4 th IPA student congress
a huge success. Following the inauguration, a plenary lecture
on ‘Entrepreneurship
for Pharmacy Students’

Prof. T. V. Narayana, Chairman, Education Division, IPA. Firstly the
Chairman of the LOC of 4 th IPA Student congress, Sri T. Jayapal
Reddy, addressed the gathering followed by Prof. K. Chinna
Swamy, Dr. M. Sheshu Madav, President IMA, Warangal, Prof. A.
Raghuram Rao, Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy of Kakatiya University,
Mr. C. Ratan, Chairperson, IPA SF and Sri. Ch. Malla Reddy. The
congress souvenir and abstracts book was released by Mr. J. A.
S. Giri and Mr. S. D. Joag, Hon. Secretary, IPA. The student forum
magazine Panache was then released by the chief guest Dr. Krishna
Ella. Dr. C. Gopalakrishna Murthy, President, IPA, presided over
the function and expressed his appreciation towards the pharmacy
institutions situated in Warangal region in starting their own local
IPA branch and for opting to organize such a huge event. While
inaugurating the congress, he recited a few Sanskrit verses from
Vedas to motivate and encourage the huge gathering of students at
the congress and received a large applause from the students.
Dr. Krishna Ella, Chief Guest of the congress delivered
the keynote address of the Congress on Innovation, Patenting
in various areas of pharmaceutical sciences. In the evening of
the first day of student congress, a mega cultural event was
organized featuring Mr. Srirama Chandra, the Indian Idol, who
enthralled the audience with his performance. The other highlights

of the cultural event are songs by Mr. K. Dinkar, alumnus of St.
Peter’s Institute and a film singer, who composed and sung the
first ever Pharmacy Anthem (available at http://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=tDX5xb4iYlo) and dance and song sequences by students
of various pharmacy colleges.
The second day of the 4 th IPA Student Congress began with a
session on ‘Evidence-based Pharmacy Education’ in which Prof.
G. Parthasarathy, Professor of Pharmacy practice, JSS College of
Pharmacy, Mysore spoke on “Evidence-based Pharmacy Practice”.
Speaking next on “Evidence-based Pharmacy Education-Impact on
Regulatory Affairs”, Dr. A. Ramkishan, Assistant Drug Controller,
CDSCO, Ahmedabad elaborated on the responsibilities of regulatory
affairs. Prof. B. Suresh, President, Pharmacy Council of India and
Vice Chancellor, JSS University, Mysore delivered a keynote
address on the theme “Evidence-based Pharmacy Education”,
in which he explained about the changes pharmacy education
system is undergoing and also about the increased employment
opportunities in the pharmacy sector. He also expressed his views
about implementation of the pharmacovigilance program and the
role a hospital pharmacist can play in the health care sector. Prof.
Suresh appreciated St. Peter’s Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences
and the Co-hosting pharmacy institutions in Andhra Pradesh as well
as in the Country for conducting and supporting the 4 th IPA Student
Congress with great enthusiasm. He expressed his happiness for
being able to come to Warangal and participate in the congress
despite his hectic schedule. Dr. K. P. R. Chowdary, Director, Vikas
College of Pharmacy, Rajahmundry chaired the theme session and
gave concluding remarks.
In the valedictory function, Prof. Sayalu, Registrar, Kakatiya
University, Prof. C. Veeresham, Principal, University College
of Pharmacy, KU appreciated the efforts of the local organizing
committee, participating students for making the student congress
a huge success. Prof. T. V. Narayana, Chairman, IPA Education
Division thanked all the institutions, delegates, speakers, members
of the LOC, IPA Student forum members, volunteers and students for
their contribution in making the Congress a grand success. During
the valedictory the organizers felicitated Prof. K. Chinnaswamy,
Prof. Y. Madhusudan Rao and Prof. Malla Reddy and other
dignitaries. Prof. B Suresh, President, PCI, gave away prizes to the
students who made best oral and poster presentations.
