19th-20th February, 2011, M.P. State Branch, Indore (M.P.)<br />
“Role of Pharmacist in Quality Healfthcare- Challenges & Opportunities”<br />
<strong>Indian</strong> <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> <strong>Association</strong>, M.P. State Branch, organized the 3 rd IPA Convention at<br />
Indore (M.P.) on 19 th & 20 th February, 2011. The topic of the convention was “Role of<br />
Pharmacist in Quality Healthcare- Challenges & Opportunities”. The convention<br />
provided a suitable platform for enhancing knowledge about various aspects like: Road<br />
Map for Pharmacy Practice, Current Trends in Drug Regulatory Affairs and latest<br />
happenings in <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> Technology.<br />
The Convention was organized under the able leadership of Dr. R.A. Sharma, Chairman, LOC<br />
and Dr. S.B. Rijhwani, Hon. Gen. Secretary, LOC. Dr. R. S. Gaud served as the coordinator of<br />
Scientific Convention, Dr. T. R. Saini served as the Chairman of Scientific Committee, Dr.<br />
Sanjay Jain served as the Chairman of Registration Committee, Mr. Himanshu Shah served<br />
as the Chairman of Exhibition Committee and Mr. Suresh Airen served as Chairman of<br />
Inauguration Committee.<br />
About 1500 delegates attended the convention and around 300 posters and 75 oral<br />
presentations were done by researchers including industry personnel, faculty members,<br />
postgraduate and undergraduate students from far and wide representing diverse regions<br />
across the country and the region.<br />

Mr. H. G. Koshia, Commissioner, Gujrat State, was the Honorable Chief Guest and Dr. C.<br />
Gopalakrishna Murty, President, The <strong>Indian</strong> <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> <strong>Association</strong>, was the Guest of<br />
Honor. The key note address on the theme of Convention was delivered by Prof. B. Suresh.<br />
This was followed by plenary lectures of Mr. Pawan Choudhari, CEO & MD, Vygon<br />
India Ltd., New Delhi, on the topic, “Winning through Wisdom and Creativity’ and Dr Ashok<br />
Vaidya, Mumbai, on the topic “Inclusive Healthcare and Integrated Rural Pharmacy: A<br />
Renaissance Path”.<br />
The Post-Lunch session had parallel stream seminars on Industrial Pharmacy & Regulatory<br />
Affairs, Hospital & Community Pharmacy and Status of Pharma Education in India and<br />
Current Scenario of Research in India. In parallel stream seminars eminent speakers<br />
delivered their informative lectures, Mr. P. P. Sharma, Vice President, PCI and FDA, Delhi,<br />
gave a lucid presentation on “Regulatory Challenges and Opportunities”, Mr. Kapil<br />
Bhargava, Ex-Dy Drugs Controller, FDA,(Central),Mumbai on “Quality Assurance in<br />
<strong>Pharmaceutical</strong>s: An Overview”, Dr. Atul Nasa, New Delhi, on “Counterfiet Medicines-<br />
Challenges ahead”, Dr. Sampada Patvardhan, Mumbai, on “Medication errors”, Dr. R. N.<br />
Saha, Dean, BITS, Pilani, on “Pharmacy Education and Importance of Industry Linkages: A<br />
Case Study”, Dr. M. N. Saraf, Principal, BCP, Mumbai, on “Reforms in <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong><br />
Education: Need Based Curriculum”, Dr. P. G. Shrotriya,(Ex-Pharma Consultant),<br />
Director(Research) SPTM, NMIMS, Mumbai, on “Quality Assurance in <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> R&D”<br />
and Dr. Ashok Omray, VP, USV Ltd., Mumbai, delivered his presentation on “Innovation<br />
Strategies of Pharma business growth in Asian countries”.<br />

After tea break, Mr. Sunil Chaturvedi, Ex-VP, Rallis India, Mumbai, gave a talk on: Industry<br />
Requirement and Placement Vision”, Mrs. Zarine Khety, Saifee Hospital, Mumbai, on “Role<br />
of Pharmacist in Pharmacovigilance”, Ms Kusum Devi, DPT Trust, New Delhi, on<br />
“Pharmacist: Society’s perception-an overview”, Dr. Bala Prabhakar, Associate Dean, SPTM,<br />
Mumbai, on “Pharma Education —Present and Future” and by Dr. Krishna Iyer. There was a<br />
panel discussion between the delegates and the experts to discuss about the current<br />
happenings in pharma profession. This was followed by cultural programme and dinner.<br />
On the second day, a series of plenary lectures, poster and oral presentation session were<br />
conducted.<br />
Plenary lecture was started with Prof S. K. Kulkarni, Director, BCP, Mumbai, on “Harvest of<br />
Hope: Need for Building an Innovation eco-system in <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> sciences” followed by<br />
lecture of Dr Sudarshan Jain, Director, Abbott Healthcare Pvt Ltd on “Current Pharma<br />
Scenario and Potential”, the next lectures were by Dr. Ajit Dangi, President & CEO, Danssen,<br />
Mumbai on “Managing Intellectual Property as a Competitive Strategy”, Mr. S. B. Roy,<br />
President, Zydus Cadila, Ahmadabad on “Pharma vision:2020 (Regulatory<br />
strategies/technologies)”, chaired by Mr. Ashish Trivedi, Licensing Authority FDA, M.P.<br />
IPA student forum activity was organized to discuss various events organized to promote<br />
pharma profession. The oral presentation session was chaired by Dr. A. N. Mishra, Prof.,<br />
Dept. of Pharm. Sciences, MS University, Vadodra, Dr. Meena Chintananeni, Chairperson,<br />
MBA (Pharm Tech) SPTM, Mumbai, Prof. S. R. Dhaneshwar, Vice Principal, Poona College of<br />
Pharmacy, Pune, Dr. S. R. Sharma, Joint Commissioner, FDA, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Dr. A. K.<br />

In the valedictory function, prizes were distributed to the winners of Poster and Oral<br />
Presentations. Students of Smriti College of <strong>Pharmaceutical</strong> Education, Indore (M.P.),<br />
SGSITS, Indore (M.P.) and NMIMS, Mumbai won maximum prizes in both competitions in<br />
all the streams. Dr. S.B. Rijhwani, Hon. Gen. Secretary, conveyed the vote of thanks.<br />
