Comparative Trial Comparator: ‘Luci’. Location:<br />

Monbulk, VIC, winter 1996. Conditions: cuttings struck<br />

into 5cm pots in Jan 1995, transferred Nov 1995 to 120mm<br />

pots filled with pinebark-based potting mix containing slow<br />

release fertiliser and grown in a greenhouse without<br />

environmental control; plants sprayed regularly and<br />

supplied nutrients to ensure good health. Trial design:<br />

randomised block to provide a minimum of 20 plants each<br />

of the variety and comparator. Measurements: minimum of<br />

20 taken at random from all plants.<br />

Description (Table 5, Figure 15) Plant: pot azalea,<br />

evergreen, growth habit broad bushy. Leaf: young colour<br />

medium to dark green, bloom upper surface weak,<br />

anthocyanin colouration nil, glossy; mature: colour upper<br />

surface dark green, lower surface medium green, length<br />

medium, width medium, shape slightly obovate, apex<br />

mucronate, cross section slightly concave, gloss weak to<br />

medium. Terminal inflorescence: bud mainly elliptic,<br />

flower number few to medium (1-3). Pedicel: length<br />

medium (mean 9mm), colour light green. Calyx: present,<br />

calyx lobe; length medium (mean 7.3mm), development of<br />

a corolla form nil to very weak. Flower: wide funnel-shape,<br />

diameter medium to broad (mean 65mm), fragrance nil to<br />

very weak; corolla double, petal number medium (15-20);<br />

background colour very pale pink towards white (RHS<br />

65D/69A), all lobes with numerous continuous or<br />

intermittent darker pink stripes (RHS 57D, 61C, 66C, 68B-<br />

68C), similar both surfaces. Stripes: approximately 50% of<br />

lobe area, radiate from base to lobe margins, width variable,<br />

intensity of colour variable; corolla lobe undulation of<br />

margin medium. throat markings: absent; anthers: absent;<br />

stigma: green. Time of flowering: very early.<br />

Origin Spontaneous mutation or sport: ‘Nordlicht’.<br />

Breeder: L J van der Meer, Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands.<br />

Selection criteria: very early flowering, flower colour and<br />

appearance. Propagation: vegetatively through at least five<br />

generations.<br />
