Origin Spontaneous mutation: ‘Emerald Gem’. Breeder:<br />

Mr EJ Bunker, Redland Bay, QLD. Selection criteria: leaf<br />

colour and short growth habit.<br />

Comparative Trial Comparator: ‘Emerald Gem’.<br />

Location: Redlands Nursery Pty Ltd, Redland Bay, QLD.<br />

Conditions: single plants derived from tissue culture placed<br />

one per 140mm pot in Jan 1997 with 3kgm 3 ‘Nutricote<br />

Blue’ slow release fertiliser and a sawdust, pinebark,<br />

peatmoss mix; pots placed in a greenhouse on top of<br />

benches, overhead irrigation and ambient temperatures.<br />

Trial design: two completely randomised blocks containing<br />

15 replicates of each variety. Measurements: single<br />

measurements from ten replicates of each variety in each<br />

block. Distinguishing characters were recorded on each<br />

variety in May 1997.<br />

Origin Controlled pollination: Mikkelsen seedling No. ‘90-<br />

670-3’ x Mikkelsen seedling No.‘90-658-1’, 1990. Breeder:<br />

criteria: two-toned flower colour, contrasting green/red<br />

leaves, branching, mound-forming habit with flowers above<br />

canopy, early continuous flowering. Propagation: cuttings<br />

and micropropagation through many generations.<br />

Description (Table 19, Figure 16) Plant: mounded habit,<br />

semi-tall 50 cm, width 32 cm, abundantly branching,<br />

continuously flowering over top of canopy. Stem: red purple<br />

(RHS 59A). Leaf: long, lanceolate, apex acuminate, base<br />

cuneate, adaxial surface grey purple (RHS 183B), petioles<br />

red purple (RHS 60A), variegation absent, entire, glabrous,<br />

margin finely ciliate. Inflorescence: 1-2 flowers per leaf<br />

axil. Flower: single, large diameter 50 mm, petal bicoloured,<br />

length 4cm, spur yellow green; heart shaped;<br />

flower buds ellipsoidal, reddish purple. Pistil: reddish<br />

purple. Stamen: five, anther hood shaped, pollen cream.<br />

Aug 1997. Conditions: green house conditions; rooted<br />

cuttings potted into 150mm pots in commercial potting mix;<br />

plants watered as required, nutrients supplied two-three<br />

times per week; temperature maintained at ca 25ºC<br />

day/16ºC night. Trial design: 20 plants of each genotype<br />

spaced at 45cm intervals and arranged in a completely<br />

randomised design. Measurements: from each plant in the<br />

trial for all the characters recorded in late Jun.<br />
