crime <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ethiopia</strong>.<br />
The cases outl<strong>in</strong>ed below demonstrate the issue of poor<br />
enforcement of environmental legislation <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ethiopia</strong> and<br />
the lack of police <strong>in</strong>volvement. Most people <strong>in</strong>terviewed<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g the course of the study were not aware of the<br />
crim<strong>in</strong>al implications of environmental violations and the<br />
need to report such crimes to the police.<br />
Chemical smoke<br />
Twenty employees of Freighters International PLC alleged<br />
that the neighbour<strong>in</strong>g Stick Trade and Industry PLC<br />
was releas<strong>in</strong>g highly concentrated pungent smoke <strong>in</strong>to<br />
the atmosphere. They compla<strong>in</strong>ed of hav<strong>in</strong>g contracted<br />
eye diseases and respiratory tract disorders because of<br />
the smoke persistently and <strong>in</strong>cessantly released from the<br />
