AUTUMN/WINTER 2012
‘Flat styles such
as ballet pumps or
flip-flops offer the
foot no support or
cushioning, and
are known to cause
issues such as overpronation
(rolling
in of the ankle) and
collapsed arches,’
says Dubai-based
podiatrist Michelle
Champlin. ‘When
buying shoes,
remember to look for
three key areas: a
good “heel counter”
or a stiff heel back
that holds your
heel in the shoe; a
“retaining medium”,
which is a lace-up
or Velcro strap that
holds your foot into
the shoe, such as on
Mary-Jane styles; and
finally, a roomy “toe
box” which doesn’t
squash your toes or
taper in too severely.
Every person’s
feet are different –
shop around for a
comfortable style and
try to get the most
comfortable, healthy
shoe within your
budget. A reasonably
priced sports shoe
is better for your feet
than an expensive
designer stiletto.’
is divided into UVA and UVB – the former
causes tanning and wrinkles, while the latter
causes burning. Sun damage can be divided
into two categories: acute and chronic.
ACUTE Sunburn is an acute form of
damage, and is an inflammatory reaction
of the skin to UVB rays. It’s generally seen
on lighter skins and is often a result of
midday sun exposure. Symptoms include
redness, rash and a burning or itching
sensation that is sometimes accompanied
by fever and headache.
CHRONIC Repeated sun damage over
many years causes changes in all layers
of the skin, including blood vessels, collagen
and elastin. Damage occurs due to UVA
rays, and changes to the skin can include
darkening, pigmented patches, a leathery
appearance, lines, wrinkles, dilated blood
vessels, age spots and skin cancers.
The best prevention for both acute and
chronic sun damage is to avoid sun
exposure between 11am and 4pm. Always
use sunscreen and reapply in the case of
prolonged exposure. Also, use moisturiser
to prevent a loss of moisture in the skin.
every part of the body: the heart, liver,
central nervous system – and the skin.
Redness and flushing is commonly seen
after intake, while some changes in
the skin happen due to liver damage
following prolonged abuse. These are
called spider angiomas: small vessels
that radiate out from a central blood vessel.
They are commonly seen on the face,
neck, chest and abdomen. Limiting your
drinking or avoiding it altogether is the
best prevention, as is eating a well-balanced
diet, consuming lots of water and taking
regular exercise.
EATING JUNK FOOD Sugary foods,
sweet drinks and refined flour increase the
blood sugar level, which in turn increases
the insulin level, which causes a thickening
of the skin and blockage of pores. It also
increases androgens (male hormones) in
the body, resulting in an increase in oil
production – and hey presto! Acne. Fried
snacks contain unhealthy fats, which release
toxins in the body and result in premature
ageing of the body and skin – too much meat
and dairy can have a similar effect. Eat more
whole grains, fruits instead of juice, brown
bread instead of white, and cut down on
sweets and oily foods.
resulting dryness and dehydration of the
skin is extremely common. Dehydrated
skin looks parched and wrinkled, often
accompanied by chapping of the lips and
fissures in the soles of the feet. All of this
can be prevented by drinking lots of
water and using moisturisers according
to skin type, as well as lip balms and thick
moisturisers for the feet.
resurface and smooth the skin, this targets
blemishes, uneven skin tone and fine lines.
The Qatari khandura has collars and cuffs,
BOND IS BACK.
So what can the English actor tell us about it?
Style speaks to the man who rebooted a
British acting – and fashion – institution
D
aniel Craig has come a long way
since playing an executed Jesuit
priest in 1998 costume drama
Elizabeth. Even further from a bit
part in UK TV series Zorro. And he probably
wouldn’t want us to mention his days in
Yorkshire-set police drama Heartbeat…
So instead we’ll skip to 2006, the year the
Chester-born, London-educated, then-38-
year-old actor permanently imprinted himself
on everyone’s consciousness as James Bond
in the 21st of the series, Casino Royale.
Traditionalists weren’t immediately sold
on his ripped and recharged portrayal. He
was the first blond 007. He was more violent
than previous Bonds, playing a grittier,
more well-built, version. Yet the industry
backed him, with four previous Bond actors
speaking out to support the casting. Roger
Moore even recently went as far as to cry that
Craig is the ‘best Bond ever.’
But Craig is more than the torch-carrier
of an English acting tradition (or even a
chauffeur for Queen Elizabeth II, as we
year he took on what could become another
multi-movie role, bringing wily journalist
‘I’M IN EVERY
SCENE, SO IT’S
HARD TO TAKE
A BACK SEAT’
Yet after committing to playing Bond in at
least two more films, and with his third Bond
title set to be released in the UAE first, on
October 25, all we want to talk to him about is
Skyfall. And we don’t think he minds at all.
Style.
UPFRONT
interview
What sort of place is Bond at
psychologically in Skyfall?
He’s in a good place at the start, but he ends up
getting into hot water. I have MEN to be a bit tightlipped,
I’m afraid. But we’ve tried to make the
story as rich as possible, so he’s in a number
of states, some happy, some sad. It comes
down to his interactions with characters. So
where Javier [Bardem], the bad guy, takes us
at certain points, it’s his movie. He’s driving it,
and it’s about how Bond deals with that.
Does Bond take a back seat?
No! I knew I’d have to take that back. I’m in
every scene so it’s hard for me to take a back
seat. What I meant is that having actors
as good as we have in the film, inevitably
they’re going to be kind of a huge part of the
movie. For me that’s a great relief.
The Bond franchise has been going for
decades: to keep it interesting you
have to keep reinvigorating the story.
What’s the approach this time?
To do the best we could. I know that sounds
like a glib way of putting it, but it’s the truth.
Time Out Style: An Overview
Style.
INTERIORS
Anatomy of
a workspace
An inside look at the desks,
studios, offices and minds
of three of the city’s most
prominent creatives
Ramin
Salsali
Age: 48
Nationality: Iranian-German
Job: Founder of the Salsali Private
Museum and the Patron for the Arts
How important is the layout of
your workspace? Very important!
Wellbeing during working hours is
essential for productivity. The starting
point is to design the office functionally,
yet personally. My advice is to never
follow the standard layout. It must be as
individual as possible.
What must-have components feature
in your workspace? For me, the
element of design is the key reason why
I choose a product. Maybe it’s because
of my background, because I study
industrial design. A product must
combine the function and design – then
it is a piece of art. Like the pencils of
Faber-Castel or Mojo of Japan.
Aside from equipment, what other
items do you need to help you
maintain productivity and creativity?
I like artwork and designed objects,
such as vintage furniture. I don’t like
flowers or plants as permanent objects
in my workspace.
Does your professional personality
differ from your social personality?
No. But I know people who [like to] have
this division, and they surprise me when
I visit their homes, which are completely
different in concept to their workspace.
Six stylish
Dubai
members’
clubs
As a much-hyped exclusive
members-only hangout opens
in Dubai this autumn, Style
finds out more, and rounds up
some other elite clubs
THE NEW ONE: VILLA ROMANA
The likes of George Clooney and Penélope Cruz have been spotted
hanging out at Saint Tropez’s renowned Villa Romana – and
now the exclusive brand is coming to Dubai. It’s the brainchild of
entrepreneur Jean-Luc Fournier, who aimed to bring the flavours of
his Italian homeland to the clientele of the Côte d’Azur. The outdoor
venue’s unique charm was created by mixing the traditional decor
and relaxed charms of a pizzeria with a dash of elegance and a
fleet of fibre-optic fireflies, topped off with live DJs, fancy fashion
shows and exclusive parties. In Dubai the club is set to open towards
the end of October at Grosvenor House, taking up the wide berth
of beach behind XL Beach Club. Precious few details (or photos)
were available as we went to press, but we’ve been told to expect
something pretty special. www.villa-romana.com.
DUBAI MARINA YACHT CLUB
It’s no secret that boats are something of a status symbol in Dubai,
and every captain needs a place to dock. Dubai Marina Yacht Club
charges for membership according to the size of your vessel, with
berthing fees for an 8m vessel starting at Dhs20,000 a year. But as with
most elitist hobbies, it’s not all about time on the high seas: the club
offers plenty of private areas in which to mingle, including a library,
cigar lounge, a private bar and terrace and a conference lounge.
Members are also invited to special conferences, talks and even
group trips out of the emirate. www.dubaimarinayachtclub.com.
Time Out Style
CAPITOL CLUB
For DIFC’s high-flying business types, The Capitol Club offers both
a networking hotspot and an exclusive social hangout. Membership
is strictly by invitation only, and no prices were quoted to Style.
Instead, potential candidates are offered a tour to see if they fit the
bill and ‘an agreement can be reached’. So far, more than 1,500 people
have made the grade since the club opened on the top floor of Gate
Village building 3 in 2008. Members benefit from spacious lounges,
meeting rooms and dining options, as well as invites to a range of
exclusive events and forums. www.capitalclubdubai.com.
THE QUAY
HEALTHCLUB
Among Dubai’s numerous health
clubs, The Quay remains one of
the most exclusive, with just 319
members at last count. A single
annual membership to both
the beach and health club costs
Dhs24,000, while it’s Dhs15,000
a year just for beach access
(there are discounts for couples,
families and concessions).
What do you get for the former?
As well as standard facilities –
25m pool, aerobics studio,
squash courts, weight and
training rooms – there’s the
High Altitude Suite, which can
simulate being at a height of
4,500m, and a climbing wall. But
it’s the location – overlooking
Madinat Jumeirah’s waterways –
that some deem worth the ticket.
BLUE MARLIN
IBIZA
Weeks after it opened with
Words: Rob Garratt
a typical display of gusto
back in March, renowned
Ibiza export Blue Marlin
quickly became known as the
exclusive-minded clubbers’
hangout of choice. Despite a
members-only door policy,
a generous allowance of
guests for every paid-up
member ensures the mood is
more nightclub than health
club. But don’t mistake this
for an open-door policy – one
can only become a member
with a valid referral, and the
club refused to share the price
list with Style. A 30-minute
drive out of Dubai, the club
is located on the beach of
Ghantoot’s Al Jazira Island
Hotel. Membership also
includes access to the pool,
shisha lounge, kids’ play
area and restaurant.
WORLD TRADE CLUB
The World Trade Club was opened
by HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid
Al Maktoum, deputy ruler of Dubai, in
1989 to celebrate the tenth anniversary
of the World Trade Centre – this was
the first skyscraper on Sheikh Zayed
Road, and for many years the emirate’s
tallest building. The desert around
the tower may have sprouted glitzier
structures since then, but from its
location on the 33rd floor of the 39-storey
building the World Trade Club still
offers an incredible panorama, while
the club’s historical clout ensures its
members’ list boasts names from Dubai’s
most important business, political and
social circles. Personal residents’
membership costs Dhs3,500 a year,
plus a one-off joining fee of Dhs4,000,
and includes free booking of the club’s
range of vibrantly decorated meeting
rooms. Earlier this year the club’s
Seven Sands restaurant began taking
bookings from non-members, so for the
first time it’s possible for the rest of us
to step back in time, soak up the view
and mingle with the high and mighty.
How does your workspace represent
your personality? My workspace is
basically my brain outside… so what you
see out there physically represents what’s
inside my mind. I mean, my thoughts have
made that space, right? The placement of
things, the space, volume and even colour
distribution… I know for a fact that the
moment I feel stressed about something,
the first thing I do is look around me and
start searching for that [negative] corner
differ from your social personality?
Yes it does. I’m generally tougher when
it comes to business. In social situations,
it’s all about my human interaction
with others, understanding them,
accommodating, absorbing, listening,
laughing, joking, having fun, playing, or
basically just doing nothing sometimes –
enjoying full laziness mode!
Interiors
Dubai is as famous for its
malls. Exploring the fittings and
furniture that transform glass and
steel into enviable working and
residential environments, this
section is dedicated to showcasing
architecture – the twisty building
Beauty and
Grooming
Still the fastest growing industry
in men’s fashion, grooming has
a natural place in TOS, mixing
quality products with expert
perfect with the beauty section,
BEAUTY
Dubai’s hot
hairstyles
Make sure your locks don’t let you down this
season. Holly Sands gets the lowdown from
three of the city’s savviest stylists
THE OMBRÉ BOB
‘I wanted to create a geometric
shape with a clean, blunt baseline,
keeping the graduation and layers
long to create a bolder profile.
The fringe is the focal point:
the blunt, wide cut serves to
frame the face, and the result
is a strong, young look. The
ombré colouring technique
(graduation from darker roots to
lighter ends) is striking, but at the same time
gives the hair a natural feel. I achieved this
look by using a darker colour at the roots to
give the hair more depth, then putting a few
lighter pieces towards the front for texture
and movement. I love doing this retro-inspired
style, and a bob can always be cut and
coloured to keep up with the latest hair trends.’
Chill Salon, Loft Offi ce 1, Dubai Media City
(04 447 1807).
THE FRINGE
‘Now that we’re heading into autumn and winter, the
highlights look is gone, and bright, bold colours are
making a big comeback. Women are also going for a
more natural skin tone and embracing the porcelain
look – copper and red tones complement this really
well. My model, Barbarann, is a natural redhead,
and I enhanced this with a deep copper. A fringe
automatically gives a strong focal point to a haircut.
Even when you’re having a lazy
day, fringes will give you an
edgy look: they’re versatile
and can be swept to the
side. Wear your fringe
blunt – a look that can be
worn sleek and elegant
or rock-chic, depending
on where you’re going.’
THE BALAYAGE TECHNIQUE
‘Balayage is the salon name for the
professional technique used to create a
natural dark-to-light effect. Some people
might feel it has gone out of fashion, but in
my opinion it came, stayed and is still bang
on trend. I love the fact that this look is very
versatile – it can be done very subtly or with
more intensity, allowing the result to
be tailored to the client’s wishes.
Balayage doesn’t just look
good on blonde hair – it’s
also a fantastic way to
add interest to brunette
and red hair too.
With this technique,
you can also put in
lowlights, or alternate
with highlights and
lowlights.’ Pastels
PERFECT THE ART OF HAIRDRESSER CHAT
Pastels Salon’s Vesna Ivetic shares her top conversational topics
Holidays ‘People in Dubai travel a lot so vacations are always a popular
1topic of conversation, and a great way to find out about cool destinations.’
Celebrity hair ‘Start a conversation with your stylist about which celebrity
2looks you most aspire to. This will give them a great idea of the overall
image you’re looking for.’
Dubai ‘Residents love to talk about their adopted city: what they love, what
3bugs them, and also what they miss – if anything – about their home country.’
Burberry, Lanvin
opting for lowmaintenance
chic. This should
ensure it’s far
quicker to style
your hair for a
night out, but pure bed-head is not the look
you should be aiming for.
The fringe
This sleek look
with heavily
graduated
fringe, as seen
at Marni, is
stylish and
smart, but
will require
commitment in
not to mention
regular trims to
keep the fringe tidy and ensure it doesn’t
hang in your eyes.
The side sweep
Donatella Versace’s models mainly rocked
the ubiquitous side-fringe, with long,
gently waved glossy locks in block colours.
Choosing environmentally friendly products is a great
way to look after your skin: after all, the chemicals used
in some less-salubrious products can do more harm
than good. It’s also a way of letting brands know that
harming animals and using unsustainable products and
non-recyclable packaging just isn’t going to cut it any
more. We’ve found fi ve great new products from a variety
of environmentally conscious brands to help you on the
An updated 25-page guide
to Dubai’s best shops
Welcome
to Style…
hat would one normally expect
from a unisex style magazine in
Dubai? Purely designer one-off
W pieces? Only fantastically expensive
cars and jewellery? Yachts – but only of the ‘super’
kind – beside pages of bejewelled stilettos, and
perhaps a golden skyscraper or two?
But team Style is here to offer you the unexpected.
The following 112 pages reflect the high-end and
aspirational, yes – but we’ve also included a plethora
of very different, creative, quirky and affordable
looks. Our home city may be world-renowned for its
opulence, yet there’s another side to it too: a side that
isn’t afraid to be led purely by its own taste, even if it
doesn’t include a triple-zero price tag.
That’s not to say we don’t adore the high-end.
We just pick out what deserves to be in fashion’s
lofty heights, rather than pandering to the pieces we
believe don’t belong there. Take Donatella Versace.
She admits in our interview on page 22 that she ‘lost
her discipline for a while’ after Gianni was snatched from
the world in the ’90s, but that she and her label are now
truly in their prime. Or take a look at DIFC (page 20): an
area that’s fast becoming the city’s ultimate style centre,
not because of the amount of monetary clout it has
( a lot), but because of the fantastically good taste it
demonstrates in its restaurants and galleries.
With every issue we’ll continue to show the
world that Dubai boasts plenty of elegance and
flair, until it becomes commonly accepted –
and then we’ll find more ways to surprise,
rouse and inspire you. After all, isn’t that
what style is all about?
What autumn/winter 2012
trend are you wearing?
I’m wearing the spikes trend.
This vintage denim Levi’s jacket
has been revamped with spike
detailing by The Ragged Priest and
I paired it with a neon bodice from
LF Boutique in SoHo, New York.
The leggings are from American
Apparel, the bag is Zara and the
shoes are Jeffrey Campbell.
How have you made it yours?
Wearing the jacket oversized makes
it look more grunge and vintage,
and I added bright neon to give it
a bit more of a wow factor.
Where’s the best place to wear
this trend in Dubai?
Seeing as I’m only 15, I would wear
this to house parties in Dubai.
Other favourite autumn/winter
2012 trends?
I’m all about the peplum trend, with
gathered, flared fabric at the waist.
I have loads of clothes in that style
at the moment.
Favourite Dubai boutique?
I adore West LA Boutique, because
it stocks brands you can’t find
anywhere in Dubai. Once you make
your first purchase you will always
go running back for more, trust me!
