AUTUMN/WINTER 2012
‘Flat styles such
as ballet pumps or
flip-flops offer the
foot no support or
cushioning, and
are known to cause
issues such as overpronation
(rolling
in of the ankle) and
collapsed arches,’
says Dubai-based
podiatrist Michelle
Champlin. ‘When
buying shoes,
remember to look for
three key areas: a
good “heel counter”
or a stiff heel back
that holds your
heel in the shoe; a
“retaining medium”,
which is a lace-up
or Velcro strap that
holds your foot into
the shoe, such as on
Mary-Jane styles; and
finally, a roomy “toe
box” which doesn’t
squash your toes or
taper in too severely.
Every person’s
feet are different –
shop around for a
comfortable style and
try to get the most
comfortable, healthy
shoe within your
budget. A reasonably
priced sports shoe
is better for your feet
than an expensive
designer stiletto.’
is divided into UVA and UVB – the former
causes tanning and wrinkles, while the latter
causes burning. Sun damage can be divided
into two categories: acute and chronic.
ACUTE Sunburn is an acute form of
damage, and is an inflammatory reaction
of the skin to UVB rays. It’s generally seen
on lighter skins and is often a result of
midday sun exposure. Symptoms include
redness, rash and a burning or itching
sensation that is sometimes accompanied
by fever and headache.
CHRONIC Repeated sun damage over
many years causes changes in all layers
of the skin, including blood vessels, collagen
and elastin. Damage occurs due to UVA
rays, and changes to the skin can include
darkening, pigmented patches, a leathery
appearance, lines, wrinkles, dilated blood
vessels, age spots and skin cancers.
The best prevention for both acute and
chronic sun damage is to avoid sun
exposure between 11am and 4pm. Always
use sunscreen and reapply in the case of
prolonged exposure. Also, use moisturiser
to prevent a loss of moisture in the skin.
every part of the body: the heart, liver,
central nervous system – and the skin.
Redness and flushing is commonly seen
after intake, while some changes in
the skin happen due to liver damage
Time Out Style
following prolonged abuse. These are
called spider angiomas: small vessels
that radiate out from a central blood vessel.
They are commonly seen on the face,
neck, chest and abdomen. Limiting your
drinking or avoiding it altogether is the
best prevention, as is eating a well-balanced
diet, consuming lots of water and taking
regular exercise.
EATING JUNK FOOD Sugary foods,
sweet drinks and refined flour increase the
blood sugar level, which in turn increases
the insulin level, which causes a thickening
of the skin and blockage of pores. It also
increases androgens (male hormones) in
the body, resulting in an increase in oil
production – and hey presto! Acne. Fried
snacks contain unhealthy fats, which release
toxins in the body and result in premature
ageing of the body and skin – too much meat
and dairy can have a similar effect. Eat more
whole grains, fruits instead of juice, brown
bread instead of white, and cut down on
sweets and oily foods.
resulting dryness and dehydration of the
skin is extremely common. Dehydrated
skin looks parched and wrinkled, often
accompanied by chapping of the lips and
fissures in the soles of the feet. All of this
can be prevented by drinking lots of
water and using moisturisers according
to skin type, as well as lip balms and thick
moisturisers for the feet.
resurface and smooth the skin, this targets
The Qatari khandura has collars and cuffs,
BOND IS BACK.
So what can the English actor tell us about it?
Style speaks to the man who rebooted a
British acting – and fashion – institution
D
aniel Craig has come a long way
since playing an executed Jesuit
priest in 1998 costume drama
Elizabeth. Even further from a bit
part in UK TV series Zorro. And he probably
wouldn’t want us to mention his days in
Yorkshire-set police drama Heartbeat…
So instead we’ll skip to 2006, the year the
Chester-born, London-educated, then-38-
year-old actor permanently imprinted himself
on everyone’s consciousness as James Bond
in the 21st of the series, Casino Royale.
Traditionalists weren’t immediately sold
on his ripped and recharged portrayal. He
was the first blond 007. He was more violent
than previous Bonds, playing a grittier,
more well-built, version. Yet the industry
backed him, with four previous Bond actors
speaking out to support the casting. Roger
Moore even recently went as far as to cry that
Craig is the ‘best Bond ever.’
But Craig is more than the torch-carrier
of an English acting tradition (or even a
chauffeur for Queen Elizabeth II, as we
year he took on what could become another
‘I’M IN EVERY
SCENE, SO IT’S
HARD TO TAKE
A BACK SEAT’
Yet after committing to playing Bond in at
least two more films, and with his third Bond
title set to be released in the UAE first, on
October 25, all we want to talk to him about is
Skyfall. And we don’t think he minds at all.
Style.
UPFRONT
interview
What sort of place is Bond at
psychologically in Skyfall?
He’s in a good place at the start, but he ends up
getting into hot water. I have MEN to be a bit tightlipped,
I’m afraid. But we’ve tried to make the
story as rich as possible, so he’s in a number
of states, some happy, some sad. It comes
down to his interactions with characters. So
where Javier [Bardem], the bad guy, takes us
at certain points, it’s his movie. He’s driving it,
and it’s about how Bond deals with that.
Does Bond take a back seat?
No! I knew I’d have to take that back. I’m in
every scene so it’s hard for me to take a back
seat. What I meant is that having actors
as good as we have in the film, inevitably
they’re going to be kind of a huge part of the
movie. For me that’s a great relief.
The Bond franchise has been going for
decades: to keep it interesting you
have to keep reinvigorating the story.
What’s the approach this time?
To do the best we could. I know that sounds
like a glib way of putting it, but it’s the truth.
Body
The chassis is the
oldest part of the
car, dating back
to 1927. It’s been
added to a 1932
Ford body, the
parts assembled
by one American
man between
1987 and 1992.
Gaurav is only the
car’s third owner.
Number plate
Any cool car needs a cool personalised
number plate: Gaurav has kept it simple and
