Time Out Style: An Overview
Style.
INTERIORS
Anatomy of
a workspace
An inside look at the desks,
studios, offices and minds
of three of the city’s most
prominent creatives
Ramin
Salsali
Age: 48
Nationality: Iranian-German
Job: Founder of the Salsali Private
Museum and the Patron for the Arts
How important is the layout of
your workspace? Very important!
Wellbeing during working hours is
essential for productivity. The starting
point is to design the office functionally,
yet personally. My advice is to never
follow the standard layout. It must be as
individual as possible.
What must-have components feature
in your workspace? For me, the
element of design is the key reason why
I choose a product. Maybe it’s because
of my background, because I study
industrial design. A product must
combine the function and design – then
it is a piece of art. Like the pencils of
Faber-Castel or Mojo of Japan.
Aside from equipment, what other
items do you need to help you
maintain productivity and creativity?
I like artwork and designed objects,
such as vintage furniture. I don’t like
flowers or plants as permanent objects
in my workspace.
Does your professional personality
differ from your social personality?
No. But I know people who [like to] have
this division, and they surprise me when
I visit their homes, which are completely
different in concept to their workspace.
UPFRONT
Six stylish
Dubai
members’
clubs
As a much-hyped exclusive
members-only hangout opens
in Dubai this autumn, Style
finds out more, and rounds up
some other elite clubs
THE NEW ONE: VILLA ROMANA
The likes of George Clooney and Penélope Cruz have been spotted
hanging out at Saint Tropez’s renowned Villa Romana – and
now the exclusive brand is coming to Dubai. It’s the brainchild of
entrepreneur Jean-Luc Fournier, who aimed to bring the flavours of
his Italian homeland to the clientele of the Côte d’Azur. The outdoor
venue’s unique charm was created by mixing the traditional decor
and relaxed charms of a pizzeria with a dash of elegance and a
fleet of fibre-optic fireflies, topped off with live DJs, fancy fashion
shows and exclusive parties. In Dubai the club is set to open towards
the end of October at Grosvenor House, taking up the wide berth
of beach behind XL Beach Club. Precious few details (or photos)
were available as we went to press, but we’ve been told to expect
something pretty special. www.villa-romana.com.
DUBAI MARINA YACHT CLUB
It’s no secret that boats are something of a status symbol in Dubai,
and every captain needs a place to dock. Dubai Marina Yacht Club
charges for membership according to the size of your vessel, with
berthing fees for an 8m vessel starting at Dhs20,000 a year. But as with
most elitist hobbies, it’s not all about time on the high seas: the club
offers plenty of private areas in which to mingle, including a library,
cigar lounge, a private bar and terrace and a conference lounge.
Members are also invited to special conferences, talks and even
group trips out of the emirate. www.dubaimarinayachtclub.com.
Time Out Style
CAPITOL CLUB
For DIFC’s high-flying business types, The Capitol Club offers both
a networking hotspot and an exclusive social hangout. Membership
is strictly by invitation only, and no prices were quoted to Style.
Instead, potential candidates are offered a tour to see if they fit the
bill and ‘an agreement can be reached’. So far, more than 1,500 people
have made the grade since the club opened on the top floor of Gate
Village building 3 in 2008. Members benefit from spacious lounges,
meeting rooms and dining options, as well as invites to a range of
exclusive events and forums. www.capitalclubdubai.com.
THE QUAY
HEALTHCLUB
Among Dubai’s numerous health
clubs, The Quay remains one of
the most exclusive, with just 319
members at last count. A single
annual membership to both
the beach and health club costs
Dhs24,000, while it’s Dhs15,000
a year just for beach access
(there are discounts for couples,
families and concessions).
What do you get for the former?
As well as standard facilities –
25m pool, aerobics studio,
squash courts, weight and
training rooms – there’s the
High Altitude Suite, which can
simulate being at a height of
4,500m, and a climbing wall. But
it’s the location – overlooking
Madinat Jumeirah’s waterways –
that some deem worth the ticket.
BLUE MARLIN
IBIZA
Weeks after it opened with
Words: Rob Garratt
a typical display of gusto
back in March, renowned
Ibiza export Blue Marlin
quickly became known as the
exclusive-minded clubbers’
hangout of choice. Despite a
members-only door policy,
a generous allowance of
guests for every paid-up
member ensures the mood is
more nightclub than health
club. But don’t mistake this
for an open-door policy – one
can only become a member
with a valid referral, and the
club refused to share the price
list with Style. A 30-minute
drive out of Dubai, the club
is located on the beach of
Ghantoot’s Al Jazira Island
Hotel. Membership also
includes access to the pool,
shisha lounge, kids’ play
area and restaurant.
WORLD TRADE CLUB
The World Trade Club was opened
by HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid
Al Maktoum, deputy ruler of Dubai, in
1989 to celebrate the tenth anniversary
of the World Trade Centre – this was
the first skyscraper on Sheikh Zayed
Road, and for many years the emirate’s
tallest building. The desert around
the tower may have sprouted glitzier
structures since then, but from its
location on the 33rd floor of the 39-storey
building the World Trade Club still
offers an incredible panorama, while
the club’s historical clout ensures its
members’ list boasts names from Dubai’s
most important business, political and
social circles. Personal residents’
membership costs Dhs3,500 a year,
plus a one-off joining fee of Dhs4,000,
and includes free booking of the club’s
range of vibrantly decorated meeting
rooms. Earlier this year the club’s
Seven Sands restaurant began taking
bookings from non-members, so for the
first time it’s possible for the rest of us
to step back in time, soak up the view
and mingle with the high and mighty.
Although I like the tough
