October <strong>of</strong> 1880 that they found any appreciable amount <strong>of</strong> gold. Harris wrote a Code <strong>of</strong><br />
Laws <strong>and</strong> staked a 160 acre townsite on October 18 <strong>of</strong> that same year. The newtown was<br />
:first named Harrisburg <strong>and</strong> later<strong>Juneau</strong>. It was the :first townfounded in Alaska following<br />
the u.s. purchase from Russia<br />
<strong>Juneau</strong>, Douglas, <strong>and</strong> Treadwell<br />
Harris <strong>and</strong> <strong>Juneau</strong> returned to Sitka with news <strong>of</strong> their find <strong>and</strong>the rushwas on. Prospectors<br />
flocked to the area<strong>and</strong> began staking claims. A French Canadian by the name <strong>of</strong> Pierre<br />
"French Pete" Enusard learned <strong>of</strong> a gold bearing outcrop on Douglas Isl<strong>and</strong> across the<br />
Gastineau Channel from the new town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Juneau</strong>. He staked adjacent claims in 1881 that<br />
were eventually sold along with others to John Treadwell, who was representing California<br />
investors. The mining town <strong>of</strong> Treadwell was soon established along with the town <strong>of</strong><br />
Douglas <strong>City</strong>. <strong>Juneau</strong> <strong>and</strong> Douglas grew along withthe mines as more people came to the<br />
area not onlyto mine but to start businesses.<br />
