Overview:<br />

<strong>World</strong> <strong>War</strong> <strong>II</strong> created more opportunities for women than any other war <strong>in</strong> history. <strong>Women</strong><br />

embraced the chance to aid troops on the Home Front and overseas as United Service<br />

Organization (USO) enterta<strong>in</strong>ers and American Red Cross nurses.<br />

While military service took men away to war, it opened new doors for women to <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

their education by go<strong>in</strong>g to nurs<strong>in</strong>g school and later enter<strong>in</strong>g the workforce as Red Cross<br />

nurses. The Red Cross was a volunteer service group <strong>in</strong> which women worked on the front<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es. By do<strong>in</strong>g so, they freed men for combat. At home, the Red Cross rolled 2.5 billion<br />

surgical dress<strong>in</strong>gs and put together comfort kits to send abroad to Prisoners of <strong>War</strong> and to<br />

men on the front l<strong>in</strong>es. Many were educated through the federally funded Cadet Nurse<br />

Corps program dur<strong>in</strong>g the war and filled the shortages of physicians and nurses on the<br />

home front.<br />

President Frankl<strong>in</strong> Delano Roosevelt created the USO <strong>in</strong> 1941 to provide the emotional<br />

support the troops needed to get through the war and to keep them connected to their<br />

families. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>World</strong> <strong>War</strong> <strong>II</strong>, the USO operated over 3,000 clubs <strong>in</strong> the United <strong>State</strong>s<br />

where women worked as volunteers and hostesses, danc<strong>in</strong>g partners, and p<strong>in</strong>g-pong or card<br />

players for soldiers at home. Marlene Dietrich, a German-born actress, abandoned her<br />

successful movie career <strong>in</strong> 1943 to enterta<strong>in</strong> American troops across Europe to boost<br />

morale. She and other enterta<strong>in</strong>ers travelled close to the front l<strong>in</strong>es to put on shows.<br />

• Explore and understand the role of the USO dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>World</strong> <strong>War</strong> <strong>II</strong>.<br />

• Critically evaluate the role of the Red Cross and USO.<br />

Materials needed:<br />

Pens/pencils, paper, computer with Internet access, projector<br />

Introduction:<br />

1. Discuss the importance of organizations such as the Red Cross and the USO as a class<br />

and bra<strong>in</strong>storm reasons why organizations like this were important to the United <strong>State</strong>s<br />

war effort. Discuss as a class possible reasons that women decided to volunteer for these<br />

organizations.<br />

Part 1: The Importance of the Red Cross<br />

1. Expla<strong>in</strong> that organizations like the Red Cross not only aided <strong>in</strong> the war, they also helped<br />

give women more of a sense of purpose and empowerment dur<strong>in</strong>g the war years.<br />

Discuss possible reasons why jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the Red Cross was well received by many women<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>World</strong> <strong>War</strong> <strong>II</strong>.<br />

2. Distribute the attached Red Cross poster (Source Sheet 17) to each student. Analyze<br />

the poster as a class, what imagery it uses, which emotions it <strong>in</strong>vokes, who is its target.<br />

Ask the class if they th<strong>in</strong>k this poster would be successful today.
