Part 2: Fight<strong>in</strong>g Fascism image analysis<br />

1. Display the image of “Soviet Guerrilla activity <strong>in</strong> Russia” (Source Sheet 26) on the<br />

screen and ask the students to analyze this photograph as a class. What do you th<strong>in</strong>k is<br />

happen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this picture? How does this compare to images of women <strong>in</strong> the military<br />

auxiliary services seen previously? What do you th<strong>in</strong>k expla<strong>in</strong>s these similarities/differences?<br />

2. Ask the students to create a title and caption for this photograph that they th<strong>in</strong>k best<br />

encapsulates the subject matter.<br />

Part 3: Individual Research<br />

1. Direct the students to conduct research and write a paper on a particular resistance<br />

group from Europe. A good place to beg<strong>in</strong> this research is:<br />

www.historylearn<strong>in</strong>gsite.co.uk/resistance_movements.htm.<br />

2. The students should address the follow<strong>in</strong>g issues <strong>in</strong> their papers:<br />

• What types of people were <strong>in</strong> the resistance group? (Gender, age, location)<br />

• Why did people jo<strong>in</strong> the group?<br />

• What were their ma<strong>in</strong> activities?<br />

• Did anybody help the group/<strong>in</strong>dividuals? Why/Why not?<br />

• Were they successful <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g the Allied war effort?<br />

3. After the students have written their papers they should present them to the class<br />

and lead a discussion with the class about the different activities that were conducted<br />

throughout Europe.
