the ones that were not included among those that are material. These consist
of eight [constituents]—that is, the seven mental constituents and the
entity constituent.
How Many Are Capable of Being Indicated?
[When the root text asks,] “How many are capable of being indicated?” this
is meant in terms of the constituents, since that is the topic under consideration.
In response to this question, [the root text] declares [in part], “Only
the form constituent.” “Indication” 609 is the quality by which an object can
be pointed out [with such language as] “This [entity] is here; that [entity] is
there.” An object that has this characteristic is described as capable of being
indicated, 610 as with the term “capable of apprehending [an object]. 611 ”
In order to further explain this phrase “capable of being indicated,” the
root text adds, “which is an object that is capable of being indicated.” The
phrase “which is an object that is capable of being indicated” means the
quality by which an object can be pointed out as being present in this or that
location.
How Many Are Not Capable of Being Indicated?
Since only the form constituent is identified as capable of being indicated, it
can be determined that the remaining seventeen constituents are “not capable
of being indicated.”
How Many Possess Resistance?
[When the root test asks,] “How many possess resistance?” it should be
understood that all the questions refer to the eighteen constituents, since
that is the topic under consideration. The response states that it is those [ten
constituents] that are “material,” in order to exclude those that are not material.
Since the entity constituent also includes noninformative form, they
are identified as “ten,” in order to indicate which type of form is considered
to be material. Moreover, these are the five material constituents of the eye
faculty, etc., and the five material constituents that are their objects.
Resistance means opposition. Entities that have that quality are said to
“possess resistance.” 612 There are three types of opposition: (1) object-opposition,
