How to be smart - the Viennese way
Climate change and a severe shortage of natural
resources, especially fossil fuels, represent the
big global challenges of the coming decades.
They will determine the future design of cities as living
spaces. There are numerous attempts and different ways
how cities face these challenges. An insight in the City of
Vienna shows what that means and how such an initiative
can look like.
Vienna has set itself the task of consistently and
continuously modernizing the city in order to reduce
energy consumption and emissions significantly and
to achieve the EUs climate protection targets (longterm
objectives: zero emission city, nearly zero energy
standards) without having to forego any aspects of
comfort or mobility. The use of renewable energy sources
should be increased combined with raising the awareness
of citizens. Multi-modal transport systems should
be available in order to reduce individual motorized
transport. Citizens should play an active role and help to
position Vienna as a European environmental city and as
a leading European center for research and technological
development.
Smart City Wien is a long-term initiative by the City
of Vienna that combines these objectives in order to
improve the design, development and perception of the
federal capital. Smart City Wien looks at a cross-section
of the city, covering all areas of life, work and leisure
activities in equal measure, and includes everything from
infrastructure, energy and mobility to all aspects of urban
development. Smart City Wien uses a holistic approach
focusing on the four main areas of Energy (-systems),
Mobility, Buildings and Infrastructure resulting in radical
protection of resources, a high socially fair quality of life
and productive use of new technology.

and innovative solutions, responsible and sustainable use
of resources and is THE big issue for the future of the City
of Vienna.

commissioned to establish the Smart City Wien Agency.
