CIRCUIT TOUR WITH MY DAUGHTER 309<br />

was afforded by <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>an</strong>ks of <strong>an</strong> uncommonly mischievous<br />

baby-eleph<strong>an</strong>t which accomp<strong>an</strong>ied its mo<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

On one occasion a footm<strong>an</strong> coming towards us stepped<br />

out of <strong>the</strong> trail <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> stood beside a large tree to let<br />

us pass. The mischievous creature saw his opportunity,<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> before <strong>the</strong> m<strong>an</strong> knew what was up, he<br />

found himself fast pinioned between <strong>the</strong> eleph<strong>an</strong>t's<br />

head <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> tree trunk. The frightened m<strong>an</strong> extricated<br />

himself with loud outcry, while <strong>the</strong> beholders<br />

were convulsed with laughter. Our own men were const<strong>an</strong>tly<br />

<strong>the</strong> victims of his pr<strong>an</strong>ks; so that, one day, I<br />

told <strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong>re would be no trouble if <strong>the</strong>y<br />

would only leave <strong>the</strong> creature alone—adding, by way<br />

gate. The advent of four foreigners, two of whom were<br />

women, created quite a stir; <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> we were all kept abund<strong>an</strong>tly<br />

busy in visiting <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> being visited. Mrs. Taylor <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Miss<br />

McGilvary were <strong>the</strong> first white ladies to visit <strong>the</strong> place;<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> of course, much to <strong>the</strong>ir own discomfort, were <strong>the</strong> centre<br />

of attraction. . , .<br />

" The people of Pre seemed very ready to listen to <strong>the</strong><br />

Gospel; so plenty of auditors were found everywhere. On<br />

Sabbath, <strong>the</strong> 16th, <strong>the</strong> first convert in Pre was baptized.<br />

He is a blind m<strong>an</strong>, Noi Wong by name, who came to<br />

Lakawn to have Dr. Peoples operate on his eyes; but as<br />

nothing could be done for him, he returned home carrying in<br />

his heart some of <strong>the</strong> teachings <strong>the</strong>re received, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> in his
