Sai, M. Luce had returned to Lu<strong>an</strong>g Prab<strong>an</strong>g, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> had<br />

wired to <strong>the</strong> oflSce in Mft<strong>an</strong>g Sai that my passport<br />

was come, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> that I was expected in Lii<strong>an</strong>g Prab<strong>an</strong>g.<br />

No instructions were given regarding my work, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> authorities were in doubt what to do. Under <strong>the</strong><br />

circumst<strong>an</strong>ces, <strong>the</strong> only passport <strong>the</strong>y could issue was<br />

one to <strong>the</strong> capital, Lu<strong>an</strong>g Prab<strong>an</strong>g.<br />

They were not particular, however, as to <strong>the</strong> route<br />

I should take. So I chose a circuit to <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast,<br />

leading through <strong>the</strong> mountain region to <strong>the</strong> JJ River,<br />

down which I could descend by boat to Lii<strong>an</strong>g Prab<strong>an</strong>g.<br />

me in teaching his tribe. With him as interpreter<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> assist<strong>an</strong>t we visited a number of contiguous villages,<br />

holding night conferences, at which <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

population of <strong>the</strong> village would be present. Everywhere<br />

a wonderfully ready response was given to <strong>the</strong><br />

Gospel. They, too, were oppressed by <strong>the</strong> dread of<br />

spirits, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> welcomed deliver<strong>an</strong>ce from <strong>the</strong>ir bondage.<br />

They would accept <strong>the</strong> Gospel, but, naturally, referred<br />

us on to <strong>the</strong> Pia.<br />

To his village at last we went. He was a venerable<br />

m<strong>an</strong> near seventy, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> though for years hopelessly<br />

crippled by paralysis of <strong>the</strong> lower limbs, his bright<br />

mind <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> business talents had raised him to his pres-
