Happenings in the Championship
Another Fairy Tale Season for the Sofa Kings
Once upon a time, in the fall of 1987, a
6-year-old boy and his family moved
all the way across the country to
Tarzana, California. Having no friends, but a
propensity to play sports, the young boy
quickly made friends with a young lad
named Stefan. The two shared a love for
sports, specifically kickball. Every morning at
recess the two friends would challenge the
rest of Mrs. Afetein’s first grade class to a
game of kickball. Knowing the full prowess of
their skill, the two would let their classmates
kick first. Once they retired the side, they
would continue to kick for the duration of
recess. (Perhaps this is where the myth of
short rosters was born.) Shortly thereafter,
Stefan introduced the young boy to his good
friend, Elliot. The three boys became fast
friends and played baseball and basketball
together. Always tagging along and nipping
at the older boys heels were Evan and Ryan,
Elliot’s brother and cousin. While they were
too small to play with the big boys, they
yearned for the day that we could all compete
on equal ground. In the meantime, the
cousins went out and assembled their own
crew of athletes beginning in middle school
with Nick, Josh, and Jimmy. However, the
crew of boys was often outshined by the
younger sister of Jimmy, Tracy. An exceptional
athlete herself, her athletic career
surpassed that of her male classmates.
Meanwhile, the younger sister of the boy was
just finding her way on the soccer fields in
the Valley. In doing so, she met two phenomenal
soccer players and friends, Traci and
Allison. The three competed against and with
one another all through grade school and
high school. As the group got older they
remained friends with the people they knew
from childhood, but their groups expanded.
Once again, the young boy found himself in
new school with only his closest friend, Elliot,
for support. The two were not friendless for
long. Soon after their arrival, Anthony befriended
the newbies. The groups all moved
away to enjoy college and eventually redescended
on the city they all came from.
Co-Workers, David Sherman and Motorcycle
Mel, attempting to relive
their childhood days,
started a kickball team.
Only JH remains from that
inaugural championship
season. Sherm, although
not the most social person
on the planet, enjoyed
playing the game and
meeting people so he
coaxed his new friend who
had just returned from
Nashville, to help him
assemble a team. The two
searched for the friends they knew who had
played sports before and added Jenn and
Amy to the roster, since they had both
played soccer and softball. Feeling like an
outsider on the team he originally started
with, JH asked if some of his friends could
play, in short order Nate and Kimberly were
added to the team among others. The rest
have since moved or found out that kickball
is not for them, but these two have become
mainstays on several championship teams.
In accordance with WAKA rules, the team of
friends needed to have a few more players
on the roster. Luckily, they knew right where
to find them. JH and Nate brought in their
friend Marissa, who was a natural fit on this
roster. Kimberly asked her kickball-playing
boyfriend to join the ranks, and the now late
20’s boy, with the Peter Pan syndrome,
brought in his cousin who had just moved to
the area. With the team complete, and Vegas
on their minds, Sofa King Good defeated
Pitch, Please 6-0 to win their 5th consecutive
Hollywood championship.
