On a construction site, several construction teams take care of the individual steps in the building process. To be successful, they need to follow the plans precisely, something that demands good communication and coordination. At the exhibition, the children can get involved in various kinds of hands-on construction: with mixing vats, mortars, and trowels the children can work with plaster and experience how the wet mixture dries to become stone hard. They try to erect a small brick wall and can arrange cobblestones. Using wooden beams they can assemble a timber roof truss, and in a next stop can cover that roof with shingles. In so doing, we learn why mostly gable end roofs are built in our region, and what kinds of roofing are preferred elsewhere. Animals also adapt to their respective climatic conditions with various constructions. At the audio stations, the children can learn how beavers, birds, ants, spiders, bees, and moles erect their homes and how we have learned from these excellent masters of architecture. Every construction site has a depot, storage, or construction container in which tools, machines, and construction materials are kept. Many of the materials are delivered in large quantities and are very heavy: for that reason, good logistics and transportation are important. In a test of agility, the children use and control the movement of a crane with a crank. Working as a team, they try to bring various materials to the right place. In an interactive experiment on the subject of mechanics, the children can also experiment with a pulley, rotary hoists, and the transmission of energy, learning something about the laws of mechanics. And because it’s very loud at a real construction site, the children can create their own cool construction site sound using drain and sewer pipes.
