Formulating with Sucramulse
Versatile and easy to use, Sucramulse produces
emulsions with a fine and stable structure, making it
suitable as a base for a wide variety of formulations.
By varying the level of Sucramulse different products
can be made, from light lotions to rich body butters,
all with a characteristic luxurious texture.
Sucrathix VX can be used to alter the rheology of the
formulation due to its shear thinning and stabilisation
properties.
Guidelines:
Sucramulse 163
> Use between 2 and 6% (see graph on next page)
> Oil Phase: 5% > 35%
> Water Phase: 65% > 95%
> Recommended to use stabilising agents in water
phase for high temperature stability: Carbomer,
Natural gum, Sucrathix VX.
> pH: 4-8
> Standard two phase emulsification (see formulation
examples).
Sucrathix VX
Use between 0.5% and 2.5% depending on viscosity
required. Heat gently in water phase and homogenise
to disperse.
Sucrose Ester Technology
Sucramulse contains an optimal blend of two complementary
Sucrose Esters together with two stabilising components.
Altogether the blend is designed to form a stable multilamellar
structure, which accounts for the unique texture
and properties of the emulsions formed.
The reason for the formation of the lamellar structure lies in
the shapes and sizes of the two Sucrose Ester molecules used.
The sugar parts of the molecules are compact and lipophobic
and will align in layers, trapping oil and other actives, making
the resulting emulsion very stable and providing an excellent
delivery vehicle to the skin.
Sucrose Esters are also mild and have a long history of safe
use in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Formulation: Sunflower Body Butter
> Heat the water to 75˚C.
> Prepare phase B and heat to 75˚C.
> Disperse the Sucrathix in glycerine and add to the
water under rapid stirring for 5 minutes.
> Add phase B into phase A and homogenise for 10
minutes at 75˚C.
> Cool under mixing and at about 30°C add phase C.

What viscosity can I expect?
By increasing the usage level of Sucramulse
163 in the formulation, the viscosity will
increase gradually.
These results are based on using a basic
emulsion with 2% Sucrathix VX.

> Cool under mixing and at 30˚C add phase C followed
by phase D.

Formulation: Wrinkle Reduction Day Cream
> Prepare phase B and heat to 75˚C.
> Heat the water to 75˚C.
> Disperse the Sucrathix in glycerine and add to the
water under rapid stirring for 5 minutes.
> Add phase B into phase A and homogenise for 10
minutes at 75˚C.
> Cool under mixing and at about 30°C add phase C
followed by phase D under homogenisation.

> Melt in the oil phase at 75°C, combine with the
water phase and homogenise at high speed for
several minutes. Transfer to propeller mixer to
cool to room temperature.

Xanthan gum
> White powder
> Low odour
> Pack size: 5kg bags
> Disperse in the water phase with a high shear
mixer, either at 20°C or at high temperature
depending on the formulation. For ease of
dispersion, mix first with glycerine.
