The Early Years
Before I went to high school I was interested in making things with my hands, making models. I had a workshop
in my basement. It was a preoccupation of mine.
Iowa State, Ames Iowa
Mechanical Engineering
I learned about the Institute of Design from a local high school teacher. I didn't know that there was even a
profession of design. I had never heard of the Bauhaus. I was completely uninformed.
Institute of Design, Chicago Illinois 1946-1950
“The New Bauhaus”
Founded by Moholy-Nagy
The teaching was based on the foundation course methodology. The emphasis was on teaching creativity.
The school was an old stone building in Chicago on North Dearborn Street, very dark and heavy, renaissance
looking. You opened the door and inside they had painted everything white and primary colors. I was absolutely
shocked. I had never been in an environment like that before.
I began by studying architecture, photography, product design and graphic design.
I felt born again. I was completely involved in it from the very beginning.
There was no course in furniture design. You were trained to design anything, to apply this thinking that was so
strongly presented as a way of life.
Moholy-Nagy “Vision in Motion” 1947
A book about the process. Like a bible. I always thought of myself as being connected to that whole movement.
It was indoctrination, like joining a religion with emphasis on achievements in art in the 20th century.
Everyone was so enthusiastic about the whole thing. For many years I felt as though I had inherited that
culture and was in the line of those people, because I had gone to that school and was so indoctrinated in their
way of thinking.
I was always interested in sculpture. I tried to make abstractions of the European monuments that were somewhat
sculptural in feeling. For example, I was very impressed by San Gimignano, which I had never heard of. It wasn't
part of my art history course, but I found out about it and I went there from Florence on a bus. It is one of the
extraordinary places, a very sculptural place. I started out by making realistic drawings of it and then made many
abstractions of those drawings.
Knoll 1951-1972
In those days, if you were interested in furniture there were only two places to work: Knoll and Herman Miller.
I applied to Knoll and got hired right away, which was a great piece of luck. When I went to apply for the job I had
no idea what it would be like to work there.
When I started, I worked in New York at the Planning Unit, which was essentially an interior design office where
Florence Knoll worked on interiors for clients. It was a furniture company but also an interior design company, so
you had the experience of designing for an actual use.
Knoll was like not leaving school. It was like a postgraduate course.
Knoll was a very simple company, no department of design and development, so you had to do everything yourself.
You designed the furniture, you invented the way to make it, you designed the jigs and tooling, and for a little while,
you were in charge of production until it got going and the various foremen and supervisors took over. Then you
went onto something else. It was a fabulous education because it meant that what you designed had to be
producible. It was an ivory tower existence.
I also met Trudy there, and after we married we immediately went to Europe.
Hans and Florence “Shu” Knoll
They had the self-confidence that they knew what was the right thing. They were not market oriented. Shu said,
“Good design is good business.” Their attitude was, “We do what we think is right, and we hope people will agree
with us.” You were very conscious that you were working for a company that was in the forefront.
Hans and Florence Knoll were an influence not so much in terms of form and style, but more in terms of quality
and level of excellence.
Outdoor Chairs
Harry Bertoia
I was sent to Pennsylvania in the fall of 1951 where Harry was working in a small space in one corner of the factory.
I couldn't be of much help because he wasn't ready for help at that time. He hadn't gotten to the point where he
knew what he was doing yet. He was a wizard at working with metal and I learned those techniques.
Harry was a very unique person because he was basically a sculptor who had gone to school with Florence Knoll
at Cranbrook and had worked with Charles Eames. Hans and Shu gave him carte blanche and he started working
with wire and invented a whole collection of wire furniture, which I was lucky enough to be involved in from the
beginning. Harry did not have directions from Knoll. They didn't tell him, “we need a chair made out of wire.”
It was his inner direction that produced those chairs.
Harry worked constantly. He produced furniture and a whole showroom full of sculpture. It was pretty impressive.
Working with Harry was intimidating in some ways. I didn't have much self-confidence about designing my own
furniture after that. His furniture was so impressive, such a huge creative act, so different than anything that had
been seen before or since.
I have always been interested in reading the biographies of scientists and artists to learn how they have achieved
what they did. With Harry I was right there watching him.
Design Since 1945
1966 Collection ® (Knoll Leisure Collection)
In October 1962 I began working on an aluminum outdoor group. Florence Knoll moved to Florida and took Bertoia
chairs and put them in front of the ocean and they rusted badly. She said, “You have to make some decent
outdoor furniture, something that is made out of materials that won't rust and corrode.” That appealed to me,
and I started working.
I experimented with button connectors for the slings, padded slings and plastic beading around the tabletops.
Ultimately I devised concealed connections, which made the chairs more elegant.
In April 1963 Florence Knoll approved the outdoor program. I had to develop all the patterns for all the cast parts.
It took me a long time to develop the collection, as there wasn't a whole team of people to help me. Details
were carefully considered. Attention to detail is expensive. We spent so much time refining it. That's why the
furniture still looks fresh.
In March 1966 the furniture was introduced. The furniture didn't have extraneous curves. Most outdoor furniture
those days was designed to look as if it was designed before the French Revolution, with stamped out metal,
bunches of flowers and leaves; it was very much period looking furniture. This was the first outdoor furniture that
enthusiasts of modern design could say, “This is a breath of fresh air.”
“God is in the details.” – Mies van der Rohe
Topiary ® / Confetti ® Collection Café ® Collection 2002 Collection ®
Richard Schultz Design, Inc. 1992 - present
In 1992 my son Peter and I started Richard Schultz Design. Peter is an architect, and I have always enjoyed
discussing my designs with him. We had talked about producing some of the more innovative designs ourselves,
rather than trying to sell them to another company.
We are all familiar with furniture that isn't furniture. You can't really sit on it very well. It may have some interesting
form possibilities, but it is not furniture. The real challenge of furniture design as I see it is that the form is almost
secondary to the comfort. It has to be comfortable and useful and the challenge is to make something that is also
beautiful and graceful and enhances the environment. We began our company with this in mind.
Topiary / Confetti 1996
In 1988 I made and photographed a model of the Topiary Dining Chair. It was so unusual, so different in form than
the office furniture I had been working on. It was also a chance for me to explore some exciting sculptural
ideas. When we began our company we said to ourselves that this is the sort of risk that it would be fun to take,
producing truly innovative furniture. Topiary is the only 100% sheet metal seating collection on the market and is
absolutely unique.
I wanted to design a chair that looked like a shrub pruned to look like a chair. I am fascinated by the way sunlight
comes through the leaves of shrubbery, producing dappled shadows. This furniture acts as a light filter,
disappearing into nature. Sometimes the pattern looks like flowers. Covered with dew it looks alive.
Café Collection 1998
We worked hard to design a form that was strong, yet light and comfortable. The folds in the seat and back
triangulate the chair giving it enormous strength, and the shape of the seat provides critical pelvic support.
We had to make many full size models in order to perfect the shape of the chair.
Pavilion ®
Richard with Pavilion
2002 Collection
Is it possible to design an interesting original chair out of tubing?
If you look back and think in terms of inheriting the tradition of Mies van der Rohe and Gropius and Breuer – who
all designed iconic tubular chairs – you can't make a chair that's more minimal than that in terms of exploiting those
materials. I suppose it is how painters felt about Picasso who did everything – what was left for them to do?
One of the ways of using those materials and achieving something interesting without repeating is to use different
thicknesses. Use of heavy members and thin members is a device that allows you to produce a sculptural effect
that is like a drawing that has thick and thin lines. It is a way of adding interest to the design. The arm is thicker
because it is more comfortable for your arm, and then the weight is supported by a thin piece of material that is
only minimally needed for the support of the seating surface and the arms. On a couple of different levels it works.
One is that it makes it a more interesting sculpture by using different thicknesses. It also allows you to put the
furniture together avoiding exposed welded joints.
In many ways “form follows technique” is a more of a governing idea than “form follows function.”
If comfort is a given then what controls form is the choice of material and technique.
I think that is well illustrated in the 2002 Collection.
Pavilion 2003
I first developed the Pavilion while working for Knoll in 1976 as an alternate to an umbrella. The legs were made
of plastic sewer pipes and we tested it against high winds by setting it up in front of an airplane at a local airport.
It was never put into production.
We now refined the design to create a stainless steel modular structure that defines space and creates shade.
The pleated curtains look delicate and are slightly transparent. In the garden it is sculpture.
Serving Cart 2005 and Twinseat 2006
How wonderful to sit outside and eat or drink. In the summer Trudy and I often have a drink in the garden
before dinner. For years customers have asked for a settee, and by stretching the lounge chair we were able to
make a double width version.
Using the same vocabulary as the rest of the 1966 Collection, we were able to make new pieces that
integrate perfectly.
Swell 2007
Now people are creating outdoor rooms. And people are taller and heavier than they were in 1966. We designed
Swell to create an outdoor sofa made with mesh fabric that does not require any cushions. By making it large in
scale we were able to create a pleasing proportion and at the same time provide a sense of mass and scale.
I can imagine Swell being used inside as well, in a lobby or reception area. I resisted the idea of larger scale
furniture at first, but was surprised at how much I liked the result.
Wing Collection 2008
I designed the Wing Chair originally thinking that it would be made of wood slats. We produced it using a laser
cutting process that allows us to create interesting shapes cut from sheet aluminum. The original design was for
a high backed chair, but during the development process we cut down the back of the prototype and we realized
that we liked the low backed version as well. Then we had a request for a settee which looked even better.
So we added it to the collection.
When we set up a group of high backed chairs in our garden they create a nice enclosure. I enjoy seeing them
with the snow on them in the winter. The tables are so simple, but they are some of my favorites.
Mateo ® Collection
1966 Bar and Counter Height Chairs and Tables 2009
The original 1966 Collection never had Bar or Counter Height chairs or tables. Now many people enjoy eating on
higher chairs. The counter height chair is perfect to use in a kitchen, as it can be so easily washed. The higher
tables are graceful and allow you to see over a railing when dining. The large square table looks so elegant.
Fresh Air Collection 2010
The Fresh Air Collection is similar to Wing, in that it is made using the same technology. The tubular based chair
has a nice spring to it, and I like its simplicity. The question of joining sheet metal is interesting to me, and I think
that by creating tabs like you would when making a paper model we have achieved a beautiful detail.
Mateo Collection 2011
With Mateo we have updated the 2002 Collection playing on a theme that has interested me for years – using
thick and thin tubing to create a sculptural contrast in the chair. By using aluminum we are able to make special
extrusion shapes that look simple from the outside but have carefully designed details on the inside that allow us
to make hidden connections. You will never see a weld on our Mateo chairs or tables because the joints are all
carefully engineered to allow for assembly without exterior welds.
I was never involved in selling the furniture at Knoll, but I remember that the salespeople were always excitedly telling me things like, “I just sold Frank Sinatra some of your
chairs.” Sometimes I didn't know whom they were talking about. I know that Pepsi had lots of chairs on their corporate terrace for years, and sometimes I would see the furniture
in someone's home or on a record cover. Recently our furniture has been used in catalogs and in advertisements. It also has a dignified history of being used in movies such as
the original Thomas Crown Affair of 1968 with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, Unbreakable of 2000 with Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson or on television in Sex and the City.
Traditional wing chairs were designed to be drawn up to the hearth, protecting
the user from cold drafts while gathering the warming heat of the fire. We have
updated this classic form for use in outdoor rooms. When used in a circular
or rectangular grouping around a fire pit or table our Wing Chair provides
enclosure and protection.
The tables are available with our porcelain, teak or fiberglass tops. The chairs
are available without pads or with seat and back pads. The chairs and tables
are designed to be bolted in place if desired, and all connections are welded
1966 Collection ®
I designed the collection in 1966 at the request of Florence Knoll, who wanted
well-designed outdoor furnishings that would withstand the corrosive salt air
at her home in Florida. Through the years, the 1966 Collection has earned a
special place in the world of outdoor furniture and is considered a classic
design for the garden.
The 1966 Collection has also been chosen to be included in various
museums, including the Permanent Design Collection of the Museum of
Modern Art, New York (MoMA).
We emphasize exceptional durability. We have re-engineered the furniture to
incorporate the best modern materials, including Teflon thread, powder coat
paint and stainless steel.
Swell ® Seating Collection
With the growth of outdoor rooms and appreciation for furnishing the
exterior environment, customers have begun to look to large, luxurious sofa
seating to furnish outdoor living rooms. We have created the Swell Seating
Collection to fit this need. It is the only large-scale modular sling seating
available and once again leads the market in innovation and design.
The Swell Club Chair is based on the generous proportions used in other
classic seating and will fit into a 30" cube. Use it and the Two and Three
Seat Sofa in conjunction with our tables to create variously configured
seating areas.
