Richard Schultz Design, Inc. 1992 - present
In 1992 my son Peter and I started Richard Schultz Design. Peter is an architect, and I have always enjoyed
discussing my designs with him. We had talked about producing some of the more innovative designs ourselves,
rather than trying to sell them to another company.
We are all familiar with furniture that isn't furniture. You can't really sit on it very well. It may have some interesting
form possibilities, but it is not furniture. The real challenge of furniture design as I see it is that the form is almost
secondary to the comfort. It has to be comfortable and useful and the challenge is to make something that is also
beautiful and graceful and enhances the environment. We began our company with this in mind.
Topiary / Confetti 1996
In 1988 I made and photographed a model of the Topiary Dining Chair. It was so unusual, so different in form than
the office furniture I had been working on. It was also a chance for me to explore some exciting sculptural
ideas. When we began our company we said to ourselves that this is the sort of risk that it would be fun to take,
producing truly innovative furniture. Topiary is the only 100% sheet metal seating collection on the market and is
absolutely unique.
I wanted to design a chair that looked like a shrub pruned to look like a chair. I am fascinated by the way sunlight
comes through the leaves of shrubbery, producing dappled shadows. This furniture acts as a light filter,
disappearing into nature. Sometimes the pattern looks like flowers. Covered with dew it looks alive.
Café Collection 1998
We worked hard to design a form that was strong, yet light and comfortable. The folds in the seat and back
triangulate the chair giving it enormous strength, and the shape of the seat provides critical pelvic support.
We had to make many full size models in order to perfect the shape of the chair.
