1966 Collection ® Serving Cart 1966 Collection ® Twinseat Swell ® Seating Collection Wing Collection
Serving Cart 2005 and Twinseat 2006
How wonderful to sit outside and eat or drink. In the summer Trudy and I often have a drink in the garden
before dinner. For years customers have asked for a settee, and by stretching the lounge chair we were able to
make a double width version.
Using the same vocabulary as the rest of the 1966 Collection, we were able to make new pieces that
integrate perfectly.
Swell 2007
Now people are creating outdoor rooms. And people are taller and heavier than they were in 1966. We designed
Swell to create an outdoor sofa made with mesh fabric that does not require any cushions. By making it large in
scale we were able to create a pleasing proportion and at the same time provide a sense of mass and scale.
I can imagine Swell being used inside as well, in a lobby or reception area. I resisted the idea of larger scale
furniture at first, but was surprised at how much I liked the result.
Wing Collection 2008
I designed the Wing Chair originally thinking that it would be made of wood slats. We produced it using a laser
cutting process that allows us to create interesting shapes cut from sheet aluminum. The original design was for
a high backed chair, but during the development process we cut down the back of the prototype and we realized
that we liked the low backed version as well. Then we had a request for a settee which looked even better.
So we added it to the collection.
When we set up a group of high backed chairs in our garden they create a nice enclosure. I enjoy seeing them
with the snow on them in the winter. The tables are so simple, but they are some of my favorites.
