THE MINING MUSEUM OF OKD
Ostrava - Petřkovice
The largest mining museum in the Czech Republic is located at the foot of Landek Hill, which is
a world-renowned locality for geology, archeology, history, natural science and mining science. It has
also become noted by the discovery of Landek´s Venus. It is the only slender Venus in Europe.
Collections of the original mining museum from 1905 and of Ostrava-Karviná´s mining since
1782 to the present can be seen in the museum. Exhibitions of machinery, which is fully operative and
is displayed in operation, acquaint visitors with particular mining occupations. Original adits in seams
named Albrecht and Fratišek (Francis) from the first half of the 19th century, which have been open to
the public, offer an authentic view of mining beginnings. On their way to the mining exhibition visitors
can stop in a typical miner´s tavern - “Harenda Barborka“, the interior of which is well-decorated
with mining objects. A sports and recreational park, rope centre, bicycle path and children´s centre
are parts of the museum.
