Thames Television In its third full year Thames Television, in which EMI has a substantial interest along with Rediffirsion, has consolidated its position as leader ofBritain's independent television companies. Prog?ammes During the whole of1970, and again in the first six months of 1971 , Thames secured a larger number of programmes in the National Top Tlventy than any other ITV company, with programmes ranging across the whole spectrum of television entertainnent and information, The Benny HilI Show, This Is Your Life and For the Love ofAda were among the year's most popular entertaitxment series ; Man at the Top, Special Branch and Armchair Theatre were outstanding in drama ; and in curent affairs and documentaries This Week aud The Day Before Yesterilay were particularly successful. Writer's Workshop won the Rediffusion Star Award as Best Schools Series of the Year at the Society of Film antl Television Arts Awards- Advertising Revenue With advertising in a depressed state at the beginning ofthis fiscal period, the revenue prospects for Thames were very doubtful indeed ; but marketing efforts over the past two years, designed to attract new types ofadvertising to television, began to show worthwhile results towards the end of 1970. And Thames'eventual revenue for 19?0/71was 10% higher than in the previous year. Studios Thames' studios at Teddington, Middleeex (pioneers ofthe colour system adopted by Britain) have always attracted electronics engineers from all over the world. The company ,s Euston studios, the newest and most advanced technicillyofall London studios, have become an equal attraction since they opened at the end of1970. Futufe Expansion Benefiting from a much-needed reduction ofthe Advertisement Lery, Thames is now able to invest in new programme projects of world-wide prestige and appeal like its forthcoming History ofthe Second World War series.
