Art History All Skill Levels LEARN & SOJOURN MODERN MASTERS AND THEIR ROOTS IN THE MEDIEVAL TRADITION Jill Kiefer, PhD (JK-5) Tuesday, 1/11–2/8, 12:30–3:30pm 4 class sessions plus field trip $115, Members $85 Artists of the Modern Era were determined to shake off the dust of the Renaissance and work outside the canons of classical approaches. It is perhaps ironic that primary resources for the Moderns were the Medievals! Modern Art draws heavily upon medieval art in its approaches to color, line, surface imagery, abstraction and subject matter. In addition, art forms invented in the Middle Ages were revived during the Modern period, such as woodcuts, wood carvings, and everyday items elevated to the status of art. Explore the influence of medieval art on each movement within the Modern period to identify medieval modernism, with all of its influences and innovations. Artists examined will include (but not be limited to) Romare Bearden, Francis Bacon, Henri Matisse, Emil Nolde, Marc Chagall, Georges Rouault, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Meet for four weeks and then sojourn to LACMA, on a date determined at our first class. We will view the museum’s very fine medieval and modern collections. WOMEN ARTISTS IN HISTORY: ART BY (AND ABOUT) WOMEN Jill Kiefer, PhD (JK-6) Tuesday, 2/15–3/15, 12:30–3:30pm 5 class sessions $115, Members $85 Throughout time, women have participated in the visual arts, but have received little recognition (or credit) for their efforts. Focus on art created by women throughout history, examine a broad range of subjects and styles explored by women, and identify the ways in which their particular challenges are manifested (or not) in their art. Close attention will also be paid to the relationship between images of women and images by women as these evolved from the Prehistoric Age forward. This will be a study of culture and history as seen through the female lens! We will look at ancient works created by unknown female artisans along with such known artists as Nun Ende (10th–11th century), Maria Ormani (15th century), Sofonisba Anguissola (16th century), Artemesia Gentileschi (17th century), Rosalba Carriera — Elizabeth Gardener Bouguereau (18th century), Elizabeth Gardener Bouguereau (19th century), Judy Chicago (20th century), Dozier Bell (21st century) and many, many others. Of course times have changed a great deal for women artists—or have they? This is an issue we’ll address in this fascinating look a women artists in history. LEARN & SOJOURN THE MIDDLE AGES: THE ARTISTIC EVOLUTION OF A THOUSAND-YEAR-LONG CIVILIZATION Jill Kiefer, PhD (JK-8) Wednesdays, 1/12–3/16, 12:30–3:30pm $160, Members $130 7 class sessions plus field trip, no class 3/9 Travel from the early medieval period immediately following the fall of the Roman Empire right through to the latter Middle Ages. Look at Byzantine and Anglo-Saxon art, Carolingian and Ottonian art, Romanesque art, and the great works produced in the High and Late Gothic styles. Themes and subjects explored will include the Crusades, the Art of the Book, the Cult of the Virgin, Feudalism and Knights, and Private Devotion among many others. The renowned medieval historian, Norman Cantor, believed that the mindset and psychology of the Middle Ages were closer to our own than any other civilization in history. We’ll explore that idea during our journey and draw our own conclusions! Meet for seven classes and then sojourn to the Getty Center to view their special exhibit, “Stories to Watch: Narrative in Medieval Manuscripts” and their collection of medieval paintings. Study contemporary art issues and concepts through weekly visits to galleries, museums and exhibitions. Look at art from an artist’s point of view and from historical perspectives. Teens/College Prep Arts & Design TEEN FIGURE DRAWING Jennifer Siegal (JNS-3) Tuesdays, 1/11–3/8, 4–6pm No class 2/22 $230, Members $200 Dive into figure drawing with a bikini- or bathing suit-clad model and learn traditional methods to render anatomy, capture gesture and show form. Loosen up each week with gesture poses and finish with 20–30 minute long poses, perfect for developing portfolio pieces. Models will hold fun beach props, helpful for those interested in animation and translating an active pose. Two weeks devoted to head drawing. Class size limited. Pick up suggested supply list. SURREALIST PEN & INK NEW! Lauren Volk (LV-1) Wednesdays, 1/12–3/9, 6:30–8:30pm No class 2/23 $150, Members $120 Explore surrealism using ink and montage. Learn the techniques of contour line drawing, shading, Wearable Art pointillism, scumbling, hatching, and design fundamentals through ink drawings. Add typography, prose, and poetry to your work. Then merge it all to create dreamlike surreal collages based on the techniques perfected by Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, René Magritte, and Man Ray. Pick up suggested supply list. PAINTING WITH ACRYLICS: PERSONAL PROJECTS WORKSHOP (Class meets at The Village #300) Lauren Volk (LV-2) Thursdays, 1/13–3/10, 4–6pm No class 2/24 $150, Members $120 What would you like to paint? CD cover? Traditional still life? Magazine ad? Portrait, landscape or movie poster? Learn advanced painting techniques while working on a project of your choice. Work in a studio setting with fellow artists and individualized instruction from a professional. Paint from photos, life or your own imagination. Learn color mixing, canvas preparation, texturing techniques, glazing techniques, wash, palette knife work and other skills depending on your interests, project and needs. Pick up supply list. Create fabulously textured silver components to use in your jewelry making. Learn how to combine pieces to make necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
