Программа
В Dilfuza Johnson
Для начала я бы хотела
представить себя. Меня зовут Д.
Джонсон и я координатор обучения
Русских классов в школе для
начального обучения Butte Creek.
The Northwest is known for its
cultural diversity and what better
place to go, to find out about other
cultures, than the Salem
Multicultural Institute World
Beat Festival. This festival
is about celebrating the
cultural diversity of our
community. Ways of learning
of other cultures at this
festival are through cultural
performances and cultural vendors
and exhibitors.
From what started off as ROBES
Flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing, and the days are growing
longer and warmer. This could only mean that spring time is here
once again. As the days warm, everyone heads outside, whether it is
gardening, barbecuing, jogging outside, or simple just sitting out on
the porch with a nice cold glass of lemonade.
Springtime for ROBES means the beginning of festivals and
fundraising events. ROBES starts off the year at the Salem
Multicultural World Beat Festival with a booth among many other
cultural booths displaying cultural pieces from the Russian Old
Believer culture. This festival is always the last weekend of June, this
year to be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 30 and July 1.
Following that is the Hubbard Hop Festival, where ROBES is among
several different cultural food booths, selling Russian Old Believer
food. This festival is always held the third Saturday in July, which
lands on Saturday, July 21 this year. Lastly, the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest,
to be held Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 13-16.
ROBES will be seeking volunteers for these events. If you or
someone you know needs to fill some community service time, or you
simply just love to volunteer your time to your community, ROBES
would love to have you on board. Without all of our hard-working
volunteers, our fundraising events wouldn’t be the success they have
been.
Now regarding ROBES annual Russian Old Believer Gala fundraiser,
a tentative date has been moved to be scheduled sometime towards
the end of September through mid-October. More details to be
announced soon. If you have any questions regarding this event, feel
free to email us at robes@robesnorthwest.org.
In other news, ROBES is slowing furnishing the office, thanks to
donated items from the community. If you have office supplies or
furniture sitting around that you don’t use anymore, you can donate
it to ROBES and receive a 2012 tax deduction receipt. Remember,
ROBES is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization and all donations made
to ROBES will have an impact on your return. If you’d like to make
a financial donation, fill out the tax-deduction box we have in this
newsletter and mail it in, along with a check to the address we have
listed in this newsletter.
Change: A Human Necessity
By Peter Molodyh
Page 3
The blacksmith slowly begins
to shape and pound the raw metal
as sparks dance off of his hammer
landing on the ground below.
Unwilling and unable to change
without external forces, the heat and
pressure are turned up and inevitably
impurities and imperfections slowly
begin to fall away. In His time and at
His pace, what used to be unbending
and uncompromising железa
(metal) is now ready for the Maker’s
purposes.
A slow and at times painful
process, change is as much a human
necessity and desire as breathing
and reproduction. It seems like
everywhere around us people are
constantly trying to either change
their financial situations, their
bodies, or their surroundings.
Our Russian Old Believer culture
is certainly no stranger to change
and revolution having its roots
firmly planted in a place such as
Russia, which has been aggressively
and continually changing since the
beginning of time and continues to
change to this day. The last 60 or so
years for the Russian Old Believers
have been especially transient ones
as our parents and grandparents
relocated many times and traveled
around the globe in search of a
better and more profitable life.
All this change, however, can be
like a double-edged sword at times,
both helping and hurting the people
in the culture as everyone tries
desperately to hold on to old ways
while trying to move forward and get
ahead in the here and now.
The concepts Old Believer
and change are almost complete
opposites in meaning and at times it
seems like the two words cannot be
used in the same sentence without
uncomfortable and guilty feelings
popping up.
Is it possible to respect our
culture and at the same time to
respect our progressing lives and our
natural desire to better ourselves?
This need to change has been
genetically passed down to us by our
Russian ancestors and is a survival
tool that keeps telling us to adapt,
to become stronger, and to keep
growing.
Also passed down to us by our
Russian ancestors, are the ideas and
messages to not allow change to take
place and to not accept or conform to
outside beliefs and ideas, especially
if they are in direct conflict or
opposition with Old Believer heritage.
So much opposing and contradictory
feelings and messages might leave
a person confused and eventually
angered and hardened, like железa,
with no way out and nowhere to go:
an almost prison-like state.
It was the Russian thinker and
teacher George Ivanovich Gurdjieff
who said, “You don’t seem to
understand YOU ARE IN PRISON. If
you are to get out of prison, the first
thing you must realize is: YOU ARE IN
PRISON. If you think you’re free, you
can’t escape.”
Perhaps Jurdjieff is referring to
the dilemma that people have when
they go along with the status-quo
and agree with whatever is presented
to them while denying and lying to
themselves about their real wants and
“A slow and at times painful
process, change is as much a human
necessity and desire as breathing and
reproduction.”
needs, especially the need to allow
beneficial change and growth.
In the midst of all the confusion
and self-denial, God is always in the
background waiting patiently, swinging
the hammer trying to encourage
change. God will turn up the heat
in our lives creating situations that
are SO hard and SO uncomfortable
that we have no choice but to do
something different. He will go to any
lengths and wait as long as it takes to
get His creation to come back to Him.
Slowly but surely as more and more
tears fall to the ground, we escape
from our prisons and what was once
hardened, un-teachable, and железa
becomes a humble and meek resource
that God can use for His good work.
Save Money on Gas
By Liza Barth
Gasoline prices have
risen over 40 cents a gallon
since late January, and
they’re predicting to hit $4
by May nationwide. Some
areas are already at that
painful price. To deal with
this unpleasantness, many
drivers are looking at ways
to lessen the impact on
their wallets.
We recently posted a
question on our Facebook
page asking readers to tell
us what they do when gas
prices rise. Judging from
the rapid responses, it’s an
issue that impacts many.
Here are some tips
from our experts on how to
reduce your gas expenses:
•Drive less. Combine
errands into fewer trips
or look for a job closer
to home.
•Walk, bike or use public
transportation more.
•Buy a more fuelefficient
car, motorcycle
or scooter.
•Drive moderately and
smoothly at a steady
pace.
•Avoid hard acceleration
and braking. Keep tires
properly inflated.
•Top off your tank with
regular gas.
•Don’t let car idle if
stopping 30 seconds or
more. Turn off engine.
