We choose to go away somewheretogether every year so we may leave stresses anddistractions of daily life at home and come together tolearn about each other, how each of us thinks, and findways we can work better together.A retreat is a time to look back at the accomplishmentswe had and look ahead to what we want to see in thefuture. Looking back for us was a joy indeed. For the elder care home, weare looking into ways to purchase a home withseveral rooms in a central location. In themeantime, we will be partnering up withseveral agencies in the counties to helpsupport the needs of the Old Believer elderlypopulation.ROBES Board of Directors. (Not pictured: Tatiana Hansen)We had a fabulous time during this year’sretreat and want the Old Believer community toknow that we are learning a lot each year andgetting better as we go. We urge everyone tolet us know what we are doing right and whatwe can do better. We are not here to solve eachand every problem we may have, but byworking together, we can begin to chip away atthem and slowly become the non-profitorganization that all of us envision.

Page 2R.O.B.E.S. NewsletterGetting to know the board members...Marya I. Kalugin, President, Board of Director - “Empowering individuals to become strong leaders ofour community.” It is my goal to learn and share ways for us to become a successful community thatworks together raising our children to be strong and proud of what our forefathers struggled to giveus. I am proud to be part of ROBES and am inspired daily by my community’s tenacity and drive tosustain the Old Believer culture.Irene Gostevskyh, Vice President, Board of Director - Irene comes to ROBES with 10 years of experiencewith non profit work. Her motivation to be involved in ROBES is to establish and sustain supportservices for the Russian Old Believer community from the youth to the elderly and to promote RussianOld Believer culture and pride. She envisions the Russian community that has its' own culturallycompetent programs to help foster growth and health for the youth and sustainability for the elderly. Her career has been in advocacy for crime victims as well as support of survivors of domestic andsexual assault. She also has many years experience in public speaking and marketing.Irina Basargin, Asst Vice President, Board of Director - A few years back, I was inspired by a few womenwho had this initiative to meet some of the needs in the Russian Old Believer community. I feel thereare some issues we have to address within our community, and want to be part of the solution. Servingon the board of directors, is very rewarding in just knowing we are here to establish some greatprograms our community will greatly benefit from. In addition to ROBES, I am blessed with my husbandAlexander, 2 daughters, and to work as a real estate broker. Looking forward to what kind ofcommunity our children will inherit, serves as a big part of my motivation.Tatiana Hansen, Secretary, Board of Director - As a Russian preschool teacher and a Russian OldBeliever, I see the great need for us to sustain and preserve the Russian Old Believer culture. Itsaddens me to see our language and traditions slowly disappearing. This is one of many reasons Iwanted to be part of ROBES. I strongly believe we can preserve our culture and continue to have apositive impact on our community.Nadya Cam, Board of Director – I’ve been blessed with many things in this world. My profession as amassage therapist helps heal people and feed my three children, one of whom is disabled. Thoughmany people have been there for us, I’ve seen where many others did not have support. It was my goalwhen I began with ROBES in 2006, that we’d create some of that support. Volunteering does take up alot of energy, but it also gives a lot of hope for possibilities and is rewarding beyond measure.Maria Bochkarev, Treasurer, Board of Director - I’m a mortgage broker by trade and work hard to fit intime every week to work on ROBES projects. I work for ROBES in the capacity of a treasurer, and in thisshort time, I have enjoyed this position and have learned a lot. What motivated and inspired me to joinROBES is the perseverance of the other board members who work together to help preserve culture andprovide support for future generation of Old Believers.

R.O.B.E.S. Newsletter Page 3Getting to know the board members...ContinuedKery Cam, Asst Treasurer, Board of Director - I enjoy fundraising for ROBES. I joined ROBES because Ihave a passion for our native language. My goal is to create a structure and support for my son andothers in the community to get traditional education.Palagia Larionov, Board of Director - I’m the newest member on board of ROBES. I first got connectedto ROBES through my work. I’m an interior designer and was asked to decorate the Ballroom for theirannual Gala event. After seeing what and how much positive impact ROBES can have for ourcommunity, I decided to join. It’s the first non-profit ever in the Russian Old Believer community and Ifeel like this is a great opportunity to contribute my time. It’s important to me that our traditions, culture and our native language survives and thrives within these changing times. If there is anything Ican do to better our community, I will do it.Kopy Vshivkoff, Board of Director - I am a Russian Old Believer that furthered his education; tohopefully make a difference someday. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Multimedia & Web Design. Ibecame apart of ROBES to help inform the Russian Old Believer community and others, the goals ofROBES and what we’re trying to do. I plan on accomplishing this with my knowledge in the web. Bybeing the youngest board member, I hope to show that you are never too young to get involved. We,the younger generation are the future and it all starts with us.EditorialSurprise! Yes, we are still around. For those that donot yet know, we are switching over to a free, bimonthly Traditional R.O.B.E.S. Newsletter from TheTraditional Gazetta Newspaper. We felt that thenewspaper was costly in volunteer effort and moneyand that it was taking our focus away from theimportant issues in the community. Our goal with thisnewsletter is to focus more on keeping the OldBeliever community and others up to date with ourinvolvement in the community, while keeping some ofthe elements from The Traditional Gazetta. If you wish to continue receiving this newsletter bymail, please write to us at the address to the right orsend us an email stating that you would like tocontinue receiving by mail. And whennine months were fulfilled from theAnnunciation, when the ArchangelGabriel had appeared to the Most-holyVirgin in Nazareth, saying, Rejoice, thouthat art highly favored… behold, thoushalt conceive in thy womb, and bringforth a Son (Luke 1:28, 31), at that timethere went forth a decree from CaesarAugustus that all the people of theRoman Empire should be taxed. Inaccordance with this decree, everyonehad to go to his own town and beregistered. That is why the righteousJoseph came with the Most-holy Virginto Bethlehem, the city of David, for theywere both of the royal lineage of David.Since many people descended on thissmall town for the census, Joseph andMary were unable to find lodging in anyhouse, and they sought shelter in a cavewhich shepherds used as a sheepfold. In this cave—on the night betweenSaturday and Sunday, on the 25 th ofDecember--the Most -holy Virgingave birth to the Savior of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ. Giving birth toHim without pain just as He wasconceived without sin by the HolySpirit and not by man, she herselfwrapped Him in swaddling clothes, worshiped Him as God, and laid Himin a manger. Then the righteousJoseph drew near and worshiped Himas the Divine Fruit of the Virgin’swomb. Then the shepherds came infrom the fields, directed by an angelof God, and worshiped Him as theMessiah and Savior. The shepherdsheard a multitude of God’s angelssinging: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will towardmen (Luke 2:14). At that time threewise men arrived from the east, led bya wondrous star, bearing their gifts:gold, frankincense and myrrh. Theyworshiped Him as the King of kings, and offered Him their gifts (Matthew 2).Thus entered the world He Whosecoming was foretold by the prophets, and Who was born in the same mannerin which it had been prophesied: of aMost-holy Virgin, in the town ofBethlehem, of the lineage of Davidaccording to the flesh, at the time whenthere was no king in Jerusalem of thelineage of Judah, but rather whenHerod , a foreigner, was reigning. Aftermany types and prefigurings, messengers and heralds, prophets andrighteous men, wise men and kings, finally He appeared, the Lord of theworld and King of kings, to perform thework of the salvation of mankind, whichcould not be performed by His servants. To Him be eternal glory and praise!AmenCLASSIFIEDSFree to good home. Digesting and absorbingfood accounts for as much as 10 percent of yourmetabolic rate. If you’re trying to lose ormaintain weight, here’s how to use this to youradvantage.1. EAT EVERY 3 TO 4 HOURS. Eating frequentmeals keeps your body working throughoutthe day.AnnouncementsUPCOMING WEDDINGS:Oregon:Vasily Mihailavich Hansen to Sofia Ivanovna OrlovFebruary 1st, 2009Varfalamey Snegirev to Elizaveta Afanasivna ReutovFebruary 8th, 2009Alaska:Dimitian Ivanovich Kalugin to Raisa Ivanovna MartushevFebruary 8th, 20092. KEEP PORTION SIZES SMALL. If you’re eatingfrequently, of course, you’ll need to keepyour overall daily calorie intake undercontrol.3. EAT BREAKFAST. It gets your metabolism upand running. If you make lunch your firstmeal of the day, you’ve missed out on anopportunity to stoke up your metabolism.4. DON’T SKIP MEALS. Your metabolism canactually slow down, leaving you more proneto store fat by the time the day is through. When you eat frequently, you’re more likelyto store energy as muscle.Source: http://ballyfitness.com/FitnessTips/Disclaimer: This advice is for yourinformation only and is not intended todiagnose or treat.
