RUSSIAN DINNER FUNDRAISER
The Russian dinner fundraiser
that was held at Butte Creek
School on January 14th was a huge
success. Fenia Ayhan, Nick Kamis,
Frosia Nikiforoff and Nila Zenuhin
are the high school students that
coordinated and planned the event
as a senior project. The purpose for
the fundraiser was to raise money
for an after school Russian class that
currently has 36 students enrolled
and is taught by Elena Alagoz four
days a week. The event helped raise about
$3,000 in profit. This will help buy materials
for the class and possibly lower the tuition
per student. The kids are enjoying the class
and have learned a lot in the short time
since the classes started on Dec 1st.
The food at the dinner turned out
perfect and absolutely delicious! We
charged $8 per person or $35 for a family
of 5 or more. This is a great deal since you
wouldn’t be able to treat the entire family
to a gourmet meal for $35 any where else.
Guests started lining up a little after 5:30
and we started serving by 5:45. We counted
about 300 guests and some purchased
meals to take home for family members
that were not able to attend. At one point
we were a bit worried that we wouldn’t
have enough seating for the guests in the
cafeteria. However, it worked out well
since we had some entertainment set up
in the gymnasium. The guests that came
earlier were considerate of the guests in
line. They respectfully made room by going
to the gym when they were through eating
dinner with their families.
The entertainment was coordinated
by the high school students. In the gym,
we had a display table with some of
the traditional wedding attire from the
different decades starting from the 1970s
to 2010. We also had Richard Morris share
with our guests how our ancestors migrated
Th e Vision Co n t i n u e s
By Irene Konev
As co-founder of ROBES, I am sad
to say my goodbyes to my fellow board
members. Something bigger is calling me
and I am stepping back to be a student
of other great organizations, and learn
from influential leaders. Although I am
withdrawing my leadership from ROBES,
I am committed to building coalitions for
ROBES at the local and state level, as I
continue working in the greater Portland
area. I am lending my leadership for two
years to Uniting to Understand Racism,
and taking a larger role in another
organization I co-founded in 2006 -
Community of Color Task Force.
The greatest honor is to have a
vision that is endorsed, supported and
implemented collectively. That had
been my incredible journey on ROBES
as we came together, shared a vision
and got busy seeing it to fruition. I
have witnessed our growth as individual
board members, as a untied team, as
Mission Statement:
To enhance and sustain the Old Believer
culture bringing forth strong, vibrant
community members, while keeping our
doors open to those in need.
I hope all you fellow readers are staying warm out there because
we may have a few cold days still upon us. Here in the northwest,
we’ve definitely had some cold days this winter but I think winter
spared us this year. Not sure about all of you but I wished for a white
Christmas; there’s always next year. Winter this year didn’t come close
to compare to the past few years. I’m ready for the warm spring days
now.
A new year is upon us once again but before I get into that; once a
year, ROBES acknowledges 1 or 2 volunteers that stuck by us for a year
and dedicated their time in one or more ways. This year at Silverton’s
40th annual First Citizen Banquet at the Oregon Garden, ROBES
nominated Tasia Alagoz and Stephanie Ayhan for 2010 Volunteer(s) of
the Year. The banquet was held on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011. From the
bottom of our hearts, ROBES would like to give a big THANK YOU to
Tasia and Stephanie, as well to ALL volunteers that dedicated their time
to ROBES and their community. We hope to see all continue to volunteer
their time at our yearly fundraising events this coming year.
Now onto what’s going on with ROBES. In the month of March,
ROBES plans to open their first official office, which will be located
in Silverton, OR off 1 st and Main. More to come on this on our website,
Facebook profile, and in the next Newsletter issue.
As mentioned in the last issue, ROBES has scheduled the Russian Old
Believer Gala; set for Friday, May 13 th , 2011. Don’t skip the flyer that
we have posted in this issue. More info about the Gala can be found
Spring Forward, Fall Back
By Kopy Vshivkoff
It’s that time of year again, Daylight Saving Time (DST). At this
time of year, the amount of daylight that we get in a day greatens
day by day. I for one am tired of getting up in the mornings for
work only to see that it’s dark outside and to return home from
work when it’s dark. I’m looking forward to more daylight in a day.
Every spring we move our clocks one hour ahead and “lose” an
hour during the night and each fall we move our clocks back one
hour and “gain” an extra hour. But Daylight Saving Time (and not
Daylight Savings Time with an “s”) wasn’t just created to confuse
our schedules.
The phrase “spring forward, fall back” helps people remember
how Daylight Saving Time affects their clocks. In the US and in
Canada, at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March, we set our clocks
forward one hour ahead of Standard Time (“spring forward”). We
“Fall back” at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November by setting
our clock back one hour and thus returning to Standard Time.
Since 1987, Marion-Polk Food Share has been “leading the fight
to end hunger in Marion and Polk counties” as the regional food
bank that supplies food at no cost to 95 partner charities. Last year,
MPFS delivered nearly 7 million pounds of food to its partners, who
in turn distributed it directly to families and individuals in need.
Our mission is to make sure no one goes hungry in our service
area. Information about where to go for emergency food is
available by calling MPFS at 503-581-3855, or going to our Website
at www.marionpolkfoodshare.org and selecting the “Get Help”
In addition to collecting and distributing food, MPFS also has
programs aimed at providing long-term solutions to hunger and
poverty. Our work is largely supported by community donors and
volunteers.
Engaging Men
By Irene Konev
To effectively end domestic and sexual violence in
communities, strategic and culturally appropriate engagement
practices need to be implemented. One of the most important
aspects of ending this societal ill is to engage men and boys in this
effort. The Community of Color Task Force has been coordinating
a conference - A Call to Men Institute; A Training Institute on
from Russia to America. He did
a wonderful job of displaying
facts and pictures on the
migration. After that, a group
of Russian ladies, Stepanida
Cam, Zenovia Toran, Agripena
Londura and Efimia Kalugin sang
a few traditional Russian folk
songs. In closing the event, the
high school kids raffled a couple
of prizes. The first prize for a
two night stay to a beach house
donated by Ivan and Anesia
Nikiforoff went to Sabrina
Frolov. The second prize was
a portable DVD player, and the
winner was Gary Cameron.
We had many guests
inquire when the next Russian
dinner will be. We hope that
this can become an annual
event, but that all depends
on parental involvement. Its
like planning, coordinating and
preparing for a Russian wedding
and we all know how much
time and effort that takes.
However, the rewards are
great! There is nothing more
gratifying than knowing that all
the hard work and effort is for
a good cause. It was awesome
to see volunteers of all ages
ranging from grandparents to
elementary and high school kids
come together to support the
community.

Ingredients Exposed!
Page 5
Re c i p e s / Ki t c h e n Ti p s
By Fenya Masaligin Bodunov
With Easter Lent here, and spring not
far off after that, there is a buzz about what
to do in terms of getting in shape and losing
that “inter-tube” around the belly. Well
here’s something that is worth considering
when working on accomplishing that goal:
High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), is a current
ingredient of choice found in many products
and is a prime culprit of preventing weight
loss. Surely, many can relate to having that
“lifesaver” tube around the stomach which
will not go away no matter what’s been
tried. A study by Princeton University looked
at the effects of HFCS and showed that,
“When rats are drinking high-fructose corn
syrup… they’re becoming obese -- every
single [one]!” This is not some random
phenomenon shown in the rats.
For many decades large-scale
manufactures have been putting HFCS
everything from cereal to yogurt to bread.
It can even be found in cough syrup! This
product enhancer is recognized differently
than regular sugar, making it stay longer
in the body and so gives an explanation
for the “inter-tube.” They like to say this
ingredient is “fine in moderation” but here
is a different take on HFCS; the typical
American eats over 40 pounds a year!
Beverages containing high fructose corn
syrup have high levels of reactive chemicals
linked with cell and tissue damage that
leads to diabetes. Trying to cut back on that
sugar intake wouldn’t be so hard if it wasn’t
hidden from us in words that unless you are
a scientist, are rather hard to understand.
But, all is not lost, even though HFCS
is found in so many of the foods today;
there is a step process of how to avoid
this ingredient: avoid fast food. Read food
labels. Know what “organic” and “natural”
actually mean. Avoid canned beverages.
