The application <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d energy <strong>in</strong> <strong>Iran</strong> goes back to 200<br />

years B.C. The Persian w<strong>in</strong>dmills with w<strong>in</strong>d-catch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

surfaces as wide as 5 m and as high as 10 m were used<br />

for gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g gra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area known as Nehbandan <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> western part <strong>of</strong> <strong>Iran</strong> up to a few years ago.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> available technology, economic<br />

aspects and <strong>the</strong> researches on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iran</strong>’s w<strong>in</strong>d potential,<br />

it is estimated that <strong>the</strong> power generation potential <strong>in</strong> <strong>Iran</strong><br />

us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d turb<strong>in</strong>es is around 15,000 MW.
