The worldwide capacity <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d-powered generators was 58,982 MW<br />

on 31 December 2005.The global rate <strong>of</strong> growth <strong>in</strong>creased to 24% <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> year 2005.<br />

The application <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d energy <strong>in</strong> <strong>Iran</strong> goes back to 200<br />

years B.C. The Persian w<strong>in</strong>dmills with w<strong>in</strong>d-catch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

surfaces as wide as 5 m and as high as 10 m were used<br />

for gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g gra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area known as Nehbandan <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> western part <strong>of</strong> <strong>Iran</strong> up to a few years ago.<br />

<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> available technology, economic<br />

aspects and <strong>the</strong> researches on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Iran</strong>’s w<strong>in</strong>d potential,<br />

it is estimated that <strong>the</strong> power generation potential <strong>in</strong> <strong>Iran</strong><br />

us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d turb<strong>in</strong>es is around 15,000 MW.

Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallation <strong>of</strong> two 550 KW Nordtank w<strong>in</strong>d turb<strong>in</strong>es, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stallation <strong>of</strong> a 90 MW w<strong>in</strong>d farm <strong>in</strong> Manjil and Roodbar area has<br />

been started a few years ago.<br />

<br />

Up to now <strong>the</strong> Manjil w<strong>in</strong>d farm is generat<strong>in</strong>g around 34.12 MW.<br />

<br />

The next large w<strong>in</strong>d farm was commissioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dyzbad at <strong>the</strong><br />

B<strong>in</strong>alood mounta<strong>in</strong> which is located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>astern part <strong>of</strong> <strong>Iran</strong>.<br />

It is a w<strong>in</strong>d tunnel <strong>of</strong> 50 kilometers <strong>in</strong> length and 5 kilometers <strong>in</strong> width<br />

through which w<strong>in</strong>d steadily flows at a mild velocity <strong>of</strong> 8.9 m/s.<br />

Dyzbad w<strong>in</strong>d farm will have forty three 660 kW w<strong>in</strong>d turb<strong>in</strong>es that can produce<br />

28.4 MW <strong>of</strong> electricity. Up to now, twenty 660 kW are deliver<strong>in</strong>g electricity to<br />

grid and ano<strong>the</strong>r twenty three 660 kW will be <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> one year .<br />

All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 660 kW w<strong>in</strong>d turb<strong>in</strong>es (SSN47-660) are manufactured <strong>in</strong> Saba Sadid<br />

Niroo factory under <strong>the</strong> license <strong>of</strong> Danish Vestas Company.<br />

2.1 The w<strong>in</strong>d synoptic stations<br />

These 53 w<strong>in</strong>d synoptic stations, record w<strong>in</strong>d data every 10 m<strong>in</strong>utes.<br />

The data is collected <strong>in</strong> 10, 20 and 40 meters height for w<strong>in</strong>d speed<br />

and 20 meters height for w<strong>in</strong>d direction. Data are analyzed by <strong>the</strong><br />

statistical methods us<strong>in</strong>g Spss, Excel and Smada s<strong>of</strong>twares.<br />

In order to do <strong>the</strong> evaluation <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d potential, 10 synoptic stations<br />

have been <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> this region. The geographical situation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

stations is illustrated <strong>in</strong> Fig. 7.

2.2 Data analysis<br />

<br />

This procedure is performed by analyz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d rose, w<strong>in</strong>d speed<br />

distribution curve and <strong>the</strong> changes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d speed rate per hour.<br />

Table 1 shows <strong>the</strong> average annual w<strong>in</strong>d speed measurements at 6<br />

stations <strong>of</strong> Manjil for <strong>the</strong> different heights.

2.3 <strong>Iran</strong> W<strong>in</strong>d Atlas<br />

<br />

<br />

In prepar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Iran</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d atlas, KLIMM (KLImate Model Manze) s<strong>of</strong>tware,<br />

which has been developed by Ma<strong>in</strong>z University, is used to model <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>d field.<br />

The required data for <strong>the</strong> first part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> high<br />

altitude atmosphere data (i.e. temperature, humidity, direction and<br />

speed <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d stream), region ground data (i.e. temperature, speed<br />

and direction <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d stream) and <strong>the</strong> topographical data.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> last section <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d atlas preparation procedure, <strong>the</strong> accessible<br />

energy from w<strong>in</strong>d energy is predicted us<strong>in</strong>g W<strong>in</strong>dPRO model. This<br />

model is used to model <strong>the</strong> low-scale regions.<br />

The W<strong>in</strong>d Atlas <strong>of</strong> <strong>Iran</strong> at 50 meters height is shown <strong>in</strong> Fig.9 .

3.1 Economical formulation<br />

<br />

For economic analysis, lifetimes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> V47-660 kW w<strong>in</strong>d turb<strong>in</strong>es and<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest rate have been assumed to be 20 years and 16% respectively.<br />

The actual <strong>in</strong>vestment cost (C a<br />

) is 1000 $/kW.<br />

It should be noted that turb<strong>in</strong>e availability is 0.98.<br />

The generation cost estimation is performed us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ECOWIND<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware. The flowchart <strong>of</strong> this s<strong>of</strong>tware is presented <strong>in</strong> Fig.10 .

The generation cost <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d energy (g) is estimated by follow<strong>in</strong>g simple<br />

3.2 Economic results and discussion<br />

The generation electricity cost is reduced as <strong>the</strong> annual average w<strong>in</strong>d<br />

speed is <strong>in</strong>creased.<br />

4. CONCLUSION<br />

By <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallation <strong>of</strong> synoptic stations and <strong>the</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> data, <strong>Iran</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>d atlas at 50 meters height is obta<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

It shows that <strong>the</strong>re are many sites <strong>in</strong> <strong>Iran</strong> with <strong>the</strong> good w<strong>in</strong>d potentials.<br />

Two w<strong>in</strong>d farms at Manjil and Dyzbad with <strong>the</strong> total capacity <strong>of</strong> 120<br />

MW are at <strong>the</strong> commission<strong>in</strong>g stage.<br />

<br />

The economical studies have revealed that <strong>the</strong> electricity generation<br />

cost by w<strong>in</strong>d turb<strong>in</strong>es is less than <strong>the</strong> actual cost <strong>of</strong> electricity.<br />

These studies have shown that <strong>the</strong> power generation potential <strong>in</strong> <strong>Iran</strong><br />

us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d turb<strong>in</strong>es is around 15,000 MW.
