History OF THE ST. LUCIE COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
T
he Fort Pierce-St. Lucie
County Chamber began in
1906 as the local board of
trade. Sometime later, the name
was changed to the Fort Pierce-
St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce.
Its office was located at various sites
throughout the years, most notably on
North U.S. 1 in the space most recently
occupied by the Jaycees. In 1977, an office
was constructed on land owned by the
City of Fort Pierce on Virginia Avenue next
to the County Administration complex.
In 1977, the G.O. Team was formed and
entered into a contractual relationship
with the Chamber. The Chamber provided
staff, equipment and office space for the
management and implementation of the
G.O. Team’s programs. That relationship was
ended in 1990, with the G.O. Team, known
at that time as the St. Lucie County Economic
Development Council, moving into office space of its own.
In 1982, the Greater Port St. Lucie Chamber was formed to
better serve the interests of the businesses in southern St.
Lucie County. The Greater Port St. Lucie Chamber constructed
an office in the mid-80’s on Port St. Lucie Boulevard.
The St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce, Inc., its present
form, resulted from the merger of the Fort Pierce-St.
Lucie County Chamber of Commerce, Greater Port St. Lucie
Chamber of Commerce and the economic development
council known as the G.O. Team, Inc. on October 1, 1993. The
merger occurred because businesses recognized the value
of having one business organization to represent them. The
central offices were then established in the Virginia Avenue
office; consolidating management and reducing expenses. At
that same time, a Fort Pierce Area Council and Port St. Lucie
Area Council were formed to insure that the needs of both
cities were adequately represented. Those Councils also enjoy
an Executive Level seat on the Chamber’s Board of Directors.
In November, 1999, the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce
entered into an agreement with the City of Fort Pierce
to operate a Fort Pierce Visitor Center in the Seven Gables
House in historic downtown Fort Pierce. Over forty dedicated
volunteers assist residents and visitors with local tourist
information and a historical perspective of our area. In 2009,
the Chamber’s contract with the city was not renewed. However,
chamber members are still able to display their information
at the Visitor Center now operated by the Treasure Coast
Manatee Foundation.
The Chamber spun out its industry recruitment efforts, formerly
the G.O. Team, and formed the Economic Development
Council of St. Lucie County in 2000. The EDC is separate and
independent of the Chamber; however, to insure cooperation,
the presidents of both organizations serve on the Board
of Directors of the other.
In order to meet the needs of our growing Hispanic population,
the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce formed its
Hispanic Council in 2005. This Council was formed to continue
the Chamber’s goal of having one, unified Chamber serve
the businesses of St. Lucie County. This Council has an Executive
level seat on the Board of Directors. Its Mission is to offer
the St. Lucie County business community an opportunity to
understand how best to enhance business relationships with
the Hispanic Community and promote the understanding of
our cultural diversity. The council will also assist the Hispanic
Business Community to adequately integrate into the St.
Lucie County Business Community at large.
In 2006, the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce sold
its building on Port St. Lucie Blvd., and relocated its Visitor
Center Services to the Port St. Lucie City Hall where we maintain
a wonderful brochure display.
In 2007, the Chamber relocated its Administrative Offices
to St. Lucie West, directly across the hall from the Economic
Development Council of St. Lucie County, the St. Lucie County
Government Economic Development Division, and Senator
Ken Pruitt. This move allowed the Chamber to consolidate its
management, administrative and sales staff under one roof
while maintaining our Visitor Centers in both downtown Fort
Pierce and Port St. Lucie City Hall.
Today, the Chamber has 1000 members, five staff members
and three visitor displays. We continue to serve as the “Unified
Chamber of St. Lucie County”, proudly serving Port St. Lucie,
Fort Pierce, and all of St. Lucie County.
Minimally Invasive Knee Surgery: The skilled surgeons at
St. Lucie Medical Center are using a state-of-the-art surgical
technique, making it possible to perform Partial Knee Replacement.
Unlike total knee replacement that removes all the knee
joint surfaces, a partial knee replacement replaces only one side
of the knee joint. Some advantages of the Oxford® partial knee
replacement are that it removes 75% less bone and cartilage, is less
painful, enables a more rapid recovery, and provides more natural
motion when compared to a total knee replacement.
Performed with a smaller incision than traditional surgery
(only 3-4 inches versus 8-10 inches for traditional surgery), this
minimally invasive approach is less painful with a faster recovery.

paradise, found at the heart of Southeast Florida’s
acclaimed Treasure Coast.
Strategically located, St. Lucie is in the middle of Florida’s largest
West Palm Beach, 120 miles southeast of Orlando and 225 miles
the north and Port St. Lucie in the south. Beautiful Hutchinson
Island and several hometown-style development communities also
St. Lucie County’s population is roughly 272,000 and just a few
years ago was the second fastest growing county in Florida and
the 13th fastest growing in the nation. The county experienced
a 6.3 percent population increase between 2004 and 2005, was
named a top 10 “boomtown” by Inc. magazine in 2006 and ranked
the city of Port St. Lucie among
“America’s Top Performing Cities”
for 2005 job growth by the Milken
Institute. Despite the downturn in
the economy, local leaders expect this
trend will continue. As the population
persists in its great growth, St. Lucie
will become an even better place to
do business and has positioned some
economic sectors for even higher
levels of success.
ST. LUCIE COUNTY
EDUC ATION
St.
Lucie County Public Schools represents over
40,000 students and more than 4,800 employees,
over half of whom are teachers. The School
District also plays an integral role in the efforts
to have our community recognized as the premier
site in the state for expanded research and education, as well as a
highly desirable location for families and business enterprise. The
school district works very closely with post-secondary educational
providers to ensure a seamless and beneficial transition from
K-12 to higher education.
Despite budget challenges felt throughout Florida, St. Lucie
County public schools have continued to show significant improvement
district-wide in school grades and student performance
on the annual Florida Comprehensive Assessment Tests,
or FCAT. Increased rigor and workplace readiness is the focus
of career and technical courses of study in all of the district’s
six high schools, with many programs providing certificated
programs with advisory councils of local professionals and businessmen
helping guide the curriculum to best meet the needs
of the future workforce. Students in those career and technical
programs excel annually in statewide as well as national academic
competitions. Also, the numbers of students enrolled in,
and performing well in, advanced and college level coursework
numbering well over 2,000. The district has been recognized
nationally for the 11% increase in the graduation rate, five times
the national average.
Communication is critical to St. Lucie County Schools’ administration
teachers, and staff that is distributed internally and externally,
and has expanded public information cablecast programming
on the district’s local television education channel. Community
outreach has also expanded through public forums and special
events where members of the community can visit schools to see
first-hand the excellence of instruction and student performance
in the classroom.
The St. Lucie County School Board has also invested significantly
$800,000,000 in new facilities in the last five years, including two
new state-of-the-art prototypical high schools, five K-8 schools
and equipped over 1,800
classrooms with advanced
learning technologies. The St.
Lucie County School District
also keeps a watchful eye on
finances, as it is ranked the
state’s second lowest in administrative
cost per student,
directing nearly two-thirds
of its revenues to instruction.
The district also has
cost-avoided high energy rates and earned rebates from Florida
Power and Light through a partnership with the district’s Energy
Advisory Team, consisting of in-house experts and professional
consultants acting in a voluntary capacity to design processes to
conserve energy and lower costs.
Community collaboration is also at the core of St. Lucie County
School District operations. The district has partnered with
Florida Atlantic University to create the Palm Pointe Educational
Research School at Tradition, with Harbor Branch Oceanographic
Institution and FAU to create the Maine Oceanographic
Academy at Westwood High School and middle school feeder
programs for the academy, with Embry Riddle University to create
Business Licensing
STARTING A BUSINESS
IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY
General Guidelines for obtaining Business Tax Receipt (formerly
known as an occupational license)…
There are four different jurisdictions in St. Lucie County requiring
a business tax receipt for conducting business - St. Lucie Village;
Fort Pierce; Port St. Lucie and the unincorporated area of St. Lucie
County. Each jurisdiction has a Building or Planning and Zoning
Department that will determine the zoning compliance for the location
of the business prior to the issuance of a business tax receipt.
Registering a business in Florida may require an entity to
register not only at the State level but also with the local
county government. Corporate entities are usually required
to register with the Division of Corporations, while many
professions are required to register with the Department of
Business and Professional Regulation. County occupational licenses
(business tax receipts) are usually obtained from the local county
government. Visit www.sunbiz.org for complete details or call
(850) 245-6058.
Florida requires state licensing or certificate of competency for
many professionals and occupations. Many require special training
and prior examination. For details call (850) 487-1395 or visit www.
myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/index.html.
If your business does not operate as a corporation and you run
your business under a name other than your personal full name, you
need to register the business with a “fictitious” name. For details call
(850) 245-6058 or visit www.sunbiz.org.
Most businesses must apply for and receive a Federal Employer
Identification Number (EIN). This registration is required even
though a business may not have employees. Visit www.irs.gov and
search EIN for additional information or call (800) 829-1040.
Taxes on your business and other federal or state reporting
requirements will depend on the nature of the business, its legal
structure and whether or not you have employees. At the state
level, visit www.myflorida.com/dor and at the federal level, visit
www.irs.gov/businesses.
