trivision & scrolling
Moving the message
ISM talks to Prismaflex and
Distec, experts in the trivision,
prismatic and scrolling
signage industries
The ability to display more than one message
on a single piece of signing equipment
has revolutionised the industry. The
future looks promising but, as with the
development of any new technology, the
challenges don’t stop once the products
arrive in the marketplace. ISM spoke to
specialists from two market leaders
Prismaflex and Distec.
Jonas Österberg, trivision specialist at
Prismaflex, is generally pleased at the progress
of the market.‘Trivision has definitely become
an established product. The focus for us in the
last few years has been on operational aspects
such as Prismaposting paper and Prismaposting
vinyl. The Prismaplus modular sign has also
been well received by the market. Scrolling
signs provide the opportunity to show three or
more images with illumination from the back
and this has been a major success in Europe.’
It is in this market, says Prismaflex scrolling
expert Olivier Nombret, that scroller signs are
often in reduced formats.‘They tend to be more
and more assimilated to street furniture or to
public installations such as train stations and
airports. Large-format vinyl scrollers provide
an alternative to trivision’s hegemony in large
formats.’
Michael Kaczmarek, International Sales and
Marketing director at Distec, has encountered
members of the buying community who have
spoken of disappointment with some of the
systems on the market:‘Although the global
market has been expanding quickly, clients
have experienced problems with manufacturers
of trivision and prismatic technology where the
failure rate exceeded their clients’ tolerance or
there has been a lack of adequate service solutions
for new equipment.’
According to Österberg, the recent worldwide
recession has made outdoor advertisers
reluctant to invest in their sites.‘When the market
changes, demand for space and quality will
increase, and so will investment in our trivision
products.’ For Nombret, the opposite seems to
have been the case.‘The last few years have
been in favour of scrolling signs as the association
of dynamic and backlit signs seduced large
players in outdoor advertising.’
At Distec, business has been somewhat sporadic
in the last ten months, but strong demand
is now exceeding original estimations for the
year and is still growing.
The global picture
Geographical trends have been fairly typical,
says Österberg.‘The US market starts the trends,
followed by Europe. Latin America always has
28 International Sign magazine November/December 2004
pp 26-36 (trivision) 10/1/05 14:18 Page 29
fundamental problems and generally needs
longer to catch up.’ Nombret adds:‘We’ve
noticed that countries that are late in advertising
development go straight for dynamic signs.’
Michael Kaczmarek has observed some other
developments.‘Global market trends have been
volatile with strong fluctuation in Europe as the
economic currency and trade demands have
slowed.’ Kaczmarek suggests that global trading
of manufactured raw material supplies has been
unexpectedly costly for him and his competitors.
Coupled with the effect of China’s strong
growth, this has affected market share and ‘contributed
to slower growth in Europe.’
While the trivision technology is stable on
large billboard markets, a lot of scrolling signs
with customised designs have been installed in
the last few years.‘In the past, outdoor advertisers
worked on their designs with big design
agencies but today they are increasingly opting
for cheaper products’, says Olivier Nombret.
Distec’s Kaczmarek has seen demand for trivision
technology diminish while scrolling is being
seen as the more efficient and safer technology.
‘Scrolling is driving the growth of indoor and outdoor
markets which means it can be perceived as
the total solution in both advertising markets.’
Jonas Österberg sees safety and rationalising
operations as major issues for outdoor advertisers.‘Strong
safety regulations need addressing,
as do increasing labour costs. In terms of the
main technical changes in the market, LED technology
has had some success in the US and will
be reserved for prism sites. Our Autoposting system
has a huge potential for the same reasons.’
Scrolling specialist Nombret suggests that
improved operational solutions are the key
developments in trivision and scrollers.
Michael Kaczmarek points to increasing
demand for total solutions regarding technology,
servicing, durability and operational functions.
While his company stands to benefit from
its investment in such solutions, generally, he
says,‘The current market is still falling short of
client expectations’.
The future is now
Advances in technology and scope are being
made all the time. Earlier this year, Prismaflex
installed the largest indoor trivision project in
the world (500 sq m) at the Johannesburg international
airport in South Africa. JC Decaux UK
and Clear Channel UK have converted all their
trivisions into Prismaposting Paper in order to
make the posting more cost effective and to
solve the problem of theft. Affiches Pisoni, a
French outdoor operator will install seventy
8m paper scrollers all along the French Riviera
early in 2005.
The coming year will be a good one for manufacturers
if predictions are correct. Olivier
Nombret at Prismaflex is already seeing an
increasing number of projects from small and
medium size advertisers, who are aspiring to the
same standards as their large compatriots.
At Distec, projections are equally positive.‘We
are seeing increased growth, higher demand, further
development of custom designs and service
provision’, said Kaczmarek.‘This in turn means we
will increase our production and solutions to our
clients across the world.’
trivision & scrolling
High-tech colour
saturation makes
signs stand out
After several years in development, imaging
solutions business MMT launched Cheetah, its
latest digital high resolution technology, last
September.
MMT’s new print engine enables the production
of superior-quality images for both double
sided backlights, double sided banners, indoor
graphics, truck curtains and fleet graphics.
Michael Schoening, managing director of
Sales & Marketing at out-of-home media company
DISTEC, was quick to praise the quality of
the printing at the Viscom Paris event, at which
all of DISTEC’s scrolling displays were fitted with
images produced by MMT (see picture, right).
‘The quality and resolution on the MMT
Cheetah prints is outstanding,’ said Schoening.
‘We watched people coming by standing very
close to find any pixel, which wasn’t possible at
all. The MMT Cheetah prints are the best we
have seen so far.’
The printing process, founded upon MMT’s
patented digital drum system, uses a piezo system
carrying true 360dpi heads spraying dot on
demand CMYK acrylic based paint. It operates
on a four colour (CMYK) technology. There are
four print heads per colour and each print-head
has 256 jets, totally 4096. The head combination
results in a print output resolution of 360dpi.
Every substrate is printed in six pass mode,
ensuring 24 layers of paint are added to each
dot, giving a superior effect incomparable to
any other digital printing process.
This is, says MMT, a key differentiator
between its new technology and that of its
competitors. The fine detailed layers combined
with MMT’s exclusive paints give a depth of
colour not achievable with normal ink based
printing. The unsurpassed colour saturation
accomplished by the paints create a 3D effect
which ensure images really stand out.
The amalgamation of patented paints and
innovative technology also enables MMT to
print a broad colour gamut, even exceeding that
available for imagers with six and eight colour
equipment.
The media handling system utilises a cylindrical
drum with a circumference of 15.3m and a
width of 6.3m. A printable area of 14m x 6.3m is
thus achievable – MMT can print on the largest
widths of vinyl available reducing the need for
seaming and, ultimately, produce better quality.
The technology is compatible with an array
of quality substrates and proprietary coating
options. MMT has approved a number of substates
which are suitable for indoor and outdoor
usage, including; block out banners, backlights,
front-lights, mesh, self adhesives and truck curtain
materials. MMT also offers a variety of exclusive
coatings, if required. These include a waterbased
matt coating, a water-based gloss coating
and a very durable, anti graffiti, solvent based
two component gloss coating suitable for fleet
graphics.
Michael Kaczmarek, International Sales and
Marketing director at Distec, says his company’s
products offer high-impact marketing and
are an unprecedented means of reaching
mobile consumers.
Redefining outdoor advertising
One of the leading innovators in the indoor and outdoor street furniture and billboards
sector is German company Distec Gmbh. ISM spoke with international sales and
marketing director Michael Kaczmarek at the company’s Heinsberg offices.
With its mission to innovate and redefine outdoor advertising in the global communication
market, Distec’s ambitions are not small. The company has a distribution network which extends
across North and South America, South Africa, Europe, Middle East, Australia and Asia.
2004 has been a busy year for Distec. Kaczmarek describes how the company is developing a
new marketing and brand awareness strategy, as well as introducing new global products.
‘While street furniture advertising formats differ in terms of function and strategic application,’
he points out,‘each product offers high-impact, target marketing and direct market coverage with
an unprecedented means of reaching today's mobile consumer audience.
‘Street furniture is versatile when it comes to advertising business. It can effectively target
population segments or be used to reach a broad-based market. Formats range from simple to
interactive; from small through to some of the world’s largest scrolling billboards. Appropriate
locations for products also vary from inner cities and dense urban centres, to suburban roadways.
‘The great majority of street furniture is located near shopping malls, well trafficked highways
and commerce centers. These outdoor products provide both long term and instant
reminders for consumer’s just moments before a potential purchase decision may be made.
For this reason, street furniture advertising is ideal for generating high awareness and brand
recognition near a point-of-purchase. On the other hand, nothing has the power to make an
impact like the largest scrolling billboards.
Kaczmarek predicts that demand for Distec’s products will lead to growth of 10% through
18%, year on year for the next five years.‘In return,’ he promises,‘we will offer new technological
advancements across the indoor and outdoor advertising as a total analytical solution to all our
client needs and expectations within their own markets.’
trivision innovation
Prism technology comes in from the cold
An innovative new, er, twist on the trivision
form of advertising is making a big impact
in the market having been launched by
Korean company Global Sign Technology.
The product is HexaVision.
The company develops, manufactures and
supplies conceptual advertising display media
for merchants, shopping centres, event sponsors
and advertising agencies all over the world.
‘Through the use of GST’s advertising media, our
customers will receive the highest return on
investment. This is the most cost effective way to
promote their products and services,’ says
Overseas Marketing manager Sophia Shin.
With its clear 360º visual design, Hexavision
comprises six rotating triangular prisms. It is an
efficient form of advertising particularly suited to
High impact trivision
Netherlands-based RotaPanel International
has been making trivision signs for more
than 10 years, and supplies big-names such
as Clear Channel, Viacom, Wall, and Gewista.
The company puts great store by its technical
expertise and project support. RotaPanel’s sign
range includes RotaPoster Digital signs between
25-40m long, and unipoles of 14.6 x 4.26m.
Recently, another innovative development
was added – the cardanic divider, or linkage
mechanism. With a divider mounted using stainless
steel ball bearings, RotaPanel says it is possible
to easily create RotaPanels of hundreds of
square metres and up to 14.5m high with a single
drive unit. Recent projects using the RotaPanel
Extralarge format include a 200m 2 unit in Yemen;
limited spaces, says GST. The prisms dynamically
rotate and portray up to six different images all
together. Each side can show a different image in
three directions at the same time. Serial, multi
images can also be presented in a story telling
manner for an even more dynamic effect.
Hexavision also allows the display of actual
merchandise along with the images utilising the
hollow interiors of the prisms. The units are available
in different sizes to suit a range of locations.
Image heights available are: 520x280mm,
900x530mm, 1150x666mm, and 1500x880mm.
GST supplies the units for placement in theatres,
shopping malls, hospitals, transport networks,
corporate buildings and exhibition centres.
www.gstad.co.kr
and a 120m 2 installation in Vienna.
Replacing static advertising on a pole with a
RotaPanel XXL result in five times more attention
value and a three times higher yield, says
the company. RotapPanel also says signs based
on digital technology exhibit fewer error caused
by mechanical failure, such as those associated
with reduction boxes and poster tensioners. The
company worked on the software for its digital
signs for two years. Now, each poster may be
treated individually with regards to tension,
speed, weight and motion. In fact, material specifications
can be saved and digital adjustments
made for material type and weight. The settings
may even be changed remotely using a PC and
GSM modem. Using this increasingly popular
technology, users can also check each
RotaPanel, and even receive error messages.
The RotaPoster Digital system positions
posters accurately in all conditions and is
unaffected by changes in poster length due to
moisture. Up to eight posters of 120-250 grams
paper or canvas may be shown. Many competitors’
systems are, says RotaPanel, often unable to
handle 250-gram material, such as canvas.
The combination of running 120 and 250
grams simultaneously is unique, says
RotaPanel. This allows the combination of short
campaigns with semi-permanent campaigns
lasting up to six months.
RotaPoster Digital also allows each poster's
exposure time to be programmed. Specific,
time-critical target groups, such as commuters
or shoppers can be targetted in what
Rotapanel calls ‘poster priority’.
trivision
modulaire Prismaplus a également bénéficié
Michael Kaczmarek, Directeur International
Branche revolutioniert. Die Zukunft sieht
vielversprechend aus, aber wie bei allen
anderen neuen Technologien gibt es auch
nach der Einführung der Produkte auf dem
Markt noch jede Menge Herausforderungen,
die bewältigt werden müssen. ISM hat mit
Spezialisten von den beiden Marktführern
Prismaflex und Distec gesprochen.
Jonas Österberg, Trivision-Spezialist bei
Prismaflex, ist sehr zufrieden mit dem Fortschritt
auf dem Markt. "Trivision hat sich definitiv als
Produkt etabliert. In den letzten Jahren haben
wir uns schwerpunktmäßig mit funktionalen
Aspekten wie Prismaposting-Papier und
Prismaposting-Vinyl beschäftigt. Der modulare
Prismaplus-Werbeträger wurde vom Markt
ebenfalls sehr gut angenommen. Motion-
Displays bieten die Möglichkeit, drei oder mehr
hinterleuchtete Bilder zu präsentieren. Diese
Entwicklung war in Europa ein großer Erfolg."
"In diesem Markt werden eher kleinformatige
Motion-Displays eingesetzt", so Motion-
Display-Experte Olivier Nombret von Prismaflex.
"Die Werbeträger werden immer mehr in die
Stadtmöblierung und öffentliche Anlagen wie
Bahnhöfe und Flughäfen integriert.
Großformatige Motion-Displays aus Vinyl sind
im Großformatbereich eine echte Alternative zu
den etablierten Prismenwendern."
Michael Kaczmarek, International Sales and
investieren. "Wenn sich der Markt verändert,
wird die Nachfrage nach Werbeflächen und
hochwertigen Werbeträgern steigen, und die
Kunden werden wieder verstärkt in unsere
Trivision-Produkte investieren." Nombret
beurteilt die Situation ganz anders. "In den letzten
Jahren waren Motion-Displays sehr erfolgreich,
Globaler Ausblick
"Die geografischen Trends waren recht typisch",
so Österberg. "Der US-Markt setzt den Trend,
und Europa folgt diesem Trend. Lateinamerika
Werbeschilder konzentrieren."
Michael Kaczmarek hat noch weitere
Entwicklungen beobachtet. "Es gab auf den
Märkten weltweit Schwankungen, was auf die
Wechselkurse und eine Verlangsamung der
Nachfrage zurückzuführen ist. Davon war vor
allem Europa betroffen." Für Kaczmarek und
seine Konkurrenten waren der weltweite Handel
mit Fertigwaren und die Beschaffung von
Rohstoffen unerwartet kostspielig. Zusammen
in Europa geführt.
Die Trivision-Technologie ist auf den Märkten
für großformatige Außenplakate sehr erfolgreich,
und in den letzten Jahren wurden viele
Motion-Displays mit kundenspezifischem
Design installiert. "In der Vergangenheit haben
Unternehmen, die Außenwerbung betreiben, für
die Gestaltung der Werbeflächen mit großen
Werbeagenturen zusammengearbeitet, aber
heute suchen sie sich verstärkt billigere
Produkte aus", so Olivier Nombret.
Kaczmarek von Distec hat beobachtet, dass
die Nachfrage nach der Trivision-Technologie
abgenommen hat, weil Motion-Displays als die
effizientere und sicherere Technologie betrachtet
werden. "Motion-Displays kurbeln das
Wachstum in den Indoor- und Outdoor-Märkten
an, was zeigt, dass diese Technologie als
Gesamtlösung für beide Werbemärkte empfunden
wird."
Jonas Österberg weist darauf hin, dass
besonders bei Unternehmen, die im
Außenbereich werben, Sicherheits- und
Rationalisierungsaspekte eine wichtige Rolle
spielen. "Die Unternehmen müssen auf die
strengen Sicherheitsvorschriften und auch auf
die steigenden Personalkosten reagieren. Was
die wichtigsten technischen Veränderungen auf
dem Markt anbelangt, so konnte man feststellen,
dass sich die LED-Technologie in den
USA als recht erfolgreich erwiesen hat. Unser
Autoposting-System bietet aus genau diesen
Gründen großes Potenzial." Motion-Display-
Spezialist Nombret ist der Ansicht, dass
verbesserte funktionale Lösungen wie vereinfachte
Posting-Techniken und die
Identifizierung von Problemen mit Hilfe der
GSM-Technologie zu den Kernentwicklungen im
Trivision- und Motion-Display-Bereich gehören
werden.
Michael Kaczmarek verweist auf die
zunehmende Nachfrage nach Gesamtlösungen
im Hinblick auf die Technologie, die Wartung,
die Dauerhaftigkeit und den Betrieb. Sein
Unternehmen wird von Investitionen in solche
Lösungen profitieren, sagt aber auch, dass der
Markt derzeit den Erwartungen der Kunden im
Allgemeinen nicht gerecht wird.
Die Zukunft hat bereits begonnen
Es werden laufend Fortschritte im Bereich der
Technologie und der Anwendungsbereiche
gemacht. Zu Beginn dieses Jahres hat Prismaflex
auf 500 m_ das größte Trivision-Projekt der Welt
im Innenbereich am internationalen Flughafen
Johannesburg in Südafrika realisiert. JC Decaux
