Málaga has always had an open and cosmopolitan
character. Its location on the shores of the
Mediterranean, a sea which has been travelled
and is still travelled by millions of people from
very different cultures, has made it this way.
But above all it is its very own citizens who have
contributed to its character, always willing to
give the best of themselves to the many people,
who for one reason or another, have decided to
live in this land during our thousand-year history.
This blend of different cultures has resulted in
the artistic and cultural wealth which characterizes
our city. Painters, musicians, sculptors,
poets and actors from Málaga have become
internationally famous and spread this esprit
all over the world. Furthermore, the history
has left on the city itself an unequalled legacy.
In a relatively small space Málaga counts on a
Roman amphitheatre, an Arabic citadel and a
Christian cathedral.
Precisely, our cathedral will bear witness to
choral performances from around the world
and present us with “Canta en Primavera” in
March, a unique event which will bring together
singers from foreign countries. But our
city is lavish in unique scenes in which to enjoy
music and singing. Historic churches such as
those of Santiago or the Sacred Heart, the Sala
María Cristina or the Teatro Cervantes will also
be fitting places during these days for this great
cultural celebration.
The participants in this event will have the
opportunity to see how the entire city puts itself
at their disposal, so that the International
Choral Festival becomes a success. The citizens
of Málaga are experts in supporting through
their participation, and their presence, each
and every one of the activities which are celebrated
in the city throughout the year. The Málaga
Festival of Spanish Cinema, the Holy Week,
the Carnival or the August Fair are only a few
examples of the ample schedule of cultural and
artistic activities which makes our city known
well beyond its borders. In this sense, we are
convinced that this International Choral Festival
will also become a new event of the Málaga
spring season.
As mayor of the city of Málaga, I would like to
take the opportunity to wish you a happy stay
among us. I hope you enjoy being a part of this
event and that you also enjoy the numerous
attractions which Málaga can offer, one of the
oldest cities of Europe. I am certain that this
will be the case.
