Out and About<br />

Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-WA., received a tour of<br />

the Heritage High School biodiesel lab last week<br />

while attending a roundtable meeting at the school<br />

to discuss the expansion of the STEM (Science,<br />

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)<br />

program.<br />

Jacquie Brown won<br />

third-runner up in the<br />

Miss America pageant<br />

last weekend. Brown,<br />

who won the Miss<br />

Washington competition<br />

last year, was awarded a<br />

$15,000 scholarship by the<br />

Miss America organization.<br />

Students from Union High School participated in<br />

this year’s Westside Regional Thespian Competition<br />

in Bellevue sponsored by the International Thespian<br />

Society and the Washington State Thespians.<br />

Andrew Forrest qualified for the state competition<br />

in ‘Monologues’ and Erika LaCarney and<br />

Kenya Skelton’s ‘Duo Scenes’ performance earned<br />

them an automatic bid to the national competition.<br />

Mountain View High School class<br />

of 2010 graduate Kyra Smith<br />

performed the “Star Spangled<br />

Banner” before Governor Chris<br />

Gregoire’s State of the State<br />

address in Olympia recently.<br />

Serving the Community<br />

Congratulations to <strong>Evergreen</strong> High School’s ‘We<br />

the People” team for winning second place at<br />

the state competition held in Olympia earlier this<br />

month. The students also attended the swearing in<br />

of the new justices on the court and went on a tour<br />

of the court and capitol. Heritage High School’s<br />

team received an honorable mention for their<br />

efforts.<br />

Thanks to the efforts of <strong>Evergreen</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong>’<br />

elementary school counselors and volunteers who<br />

helped coordinate this year’s giving programs<br />

within the elementary schools, more than 280<br />

families were served during Thanksgiving and 770<br />

families during the Christmas season with food<br />

box donations and gifts of toys and clothes. Special<br />

thanks to the following sponsors of the drive:<br />

Shepherd, Clark <strong>Public</strong> Utilities, Share House, Bible<br />

Dune it Again, Fairway Village Community Men’s<br />

Golf Club, Renovatus Church, The Salvation Army<br />

Giving Tree, New Heights Church, Boy Scout pack<br />

489 and many other staff and community members<br />

who reached out to those in our community in need.<br />

<strong>Evergreen</strong> High School students and staff held<br />

their yearly holiday gift drive for the D.S.H.S<br />

(Department of Social and Health Services) Foster<br />

Kids program providing gifts for 96 children.<br />

this month. Twenty-four teams from Southwest<br />

Washington and Portland attended the competition.<br />

Organizers from FIRST were so impressed with the<br />

event that they have asked EHS to host again in 2012.<br />

Grants & Scholarships<br />

The Mountain View High School band received a<br />

$2,500 donation from Safeway to be used for the<br />

school’s band program.<br />

Students, staff and parent volunteers at Harmony<br />

Elementary School coordinated a holiday giving tree<br />

and were able to provide much needed items for 20<br />

families over the holiday season. Special thanks<br />

to parents Claudine McKague, Keri Sork and<br />

Elizabeth Watson.<br />

Wy’east Middle School EXCEL students made<br />

holiday cards for 50 patients at Legacy Emanuel<br />

Hospital. Students hand crafted and decorated their<br />

cards and included a riddle or a joke to brighten the<br />

patients’ day.<br />

Covington Middle School students donated 2,630<br />

pounds of food during the annual Holiday Food<br />

Drive. Donations from the drive went to the FISH<br />

of Orchards and to Covington families in need.<br />

School News<br />

Rotary of East Vancouver representatives Eve<br />

Barnett and Sarah Del Moral presented students at<br />

Mill Plain Elementary School with a box of brand<br />

new books. The rotary brings in speakers several<br />

times a month and each speaker is presented with a<br />

children’s book which is then donated to the school’s<br />

library.<br />

Staff<br />

Congratulations to Heritage High School teacher<br />

Kimberleigh Anderson who has been named Regional<br />

Dance Teacher of the Year by the Alliance for Health,<br />

Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and is one<br />

of five finalists for National Dance Teacher of the Year.<br />

Heritage High School photography teacher Lee<br />

Emmert has been selected among four in the nation to<br />

receive an award of excellence and innovation in the<br />

arts. Emmert will receive $3,000 to help support his<br />

work at Heritage.<br />

Riverview Elementary School’s PE teacher Alice Atha<br />

is currently in Lagos, Nigeria at the American<br />

International School of Lagos, working with teachers<br />

and students on a comprehensive physical education<br />

program for the schools there. The trip came about<br />

through the work Atha does with OSPI’s Health and<br />

Fitness Cadre.<br />

<strong>Evergreen</strong> High School (EHS) hosted the FIRST<br />

(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and<br />

Technology) Robotics Competition event earlier
