PART II: Research, Teaching, Leadership and Clinical Contributions
Narrative Report
I am a graduate of the MGH-McLean Adult Psychiatry Residency Program and the Partners
Healthcare Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. My clinical work is based out of McLean Hospital
in Belmont, Massachusetts. As medical director at The McLean Center at Fernside, I work with
multidisciplinary teams to assess and treat residential patients with a broad range of substance
abuse and co-morbid psychiatric disorders. Leadership and administrative duties include
overseeing and supervising the daily medical operations and quality of the drug and alcohol
abuse treatment service, participation in utilization management, risk management and
continuous quality improvement activities and integration of this program’s services with the
clinical, research, educational, fiscal and operational components of McLean Hospital. My
research interests lie in developing innovative, evidence-based psychosocial treatments for dual
diagnosis populations. I am currently a McLean Hospital Maria Lorenz Pope Research Fellow
working to create and pilot a novel integrated treatment for patients with co-occurring borderline

personality disorder and substance use disorders using elements of motivational interviewing
techniques and mentalization. I am involved in teaching and supervision, currently developing
and teaching a motivational interviewing curriculum for PGY-3 residents and working
individually with residents and medical students to develop interviewing skills and supervising
difficult substance abuse cases. I am the editor of the The Massachusetts General Hospital and
McLean Hospital Residency Handbook of Psychiatry (2010), have designed a flexible
curriculum to train clinicians in the effective use of Alcoholics Anonymous as an adjunct for
patients with alcohol use disorders, and am a trainer for buprenorphine prescribing.

2004-2005 Student Initiative for Psychiatric Education and Services (SIPES)

Conceptualized a program to increase awareness of mental health
issues among medical students and patients at UC Davis student run
clinics
Formulated protocols for researching and developing peer and faculty
reviewed teaching modules on psychiatric issues and used the
protocols to develop a module on depression
Planned lessons and taught medical students and patients about
depression
Supervised other medical student and undergraduate volunteers in
creating teaching modules and lesson plans
Wrote a grant and was funded $30,000 to use the SIPES model as the
basis for a child and adolescent psychiatry mentoring program

C. Report of Clinical Activities
1. Description of Clinical Practice
Director, McLean Center at Fernside. Clinical duties include working with a
multidisciplinary team to assess and treat residential patients with a broad range of
substance abuse and co-morbid psychiatric disorders. Administrative duties include
overseeing and supervising the daily medical operations and quality of the drug and
alcohol abuse treatment service, participation in utilization management, risk
management and continuous quality improvement activities and integration of this
program’s services with the clinical, research, educational, fiscal and operational
components of McLean Hospital. Administrative duties include responsibility for the
development and implementation of all general, emergency, and personnel policies and
procedures necessary to ensure a safe, productive and therapeutic program and working to ensure
that all policies and procedures are designed to comply with standards set by the hospital and
regulatory and accrediting agencies, over site of the business management and clerical functions
with the Administrative Assistant/Secretary and was responsible for overseeing implementation
of payroll systems, patient accounts, accounts payable, petty cash, and purchases for the program
as well as monitoring expenses, revenues and allocation of resources and assisting in
development of budgets for projected fiscal year in collaboration with the fiscal department of
McLean Hospital and worked with the Vice President, Network Development at McLean
Hospital and McLean Hospital Department of Network Development to ensure that the program
operates within the budget.
Clinical responsibilities include direct supervision of the Clinicians/Case Managers and direct
care staff including nurses and CRCs and completing performance evaluations for these
employees as well as over site of development of annual training plan and its implementation to
meet credentialing criteria and policy requirements and conducting training in relevant areas of
expertise.

Maria Lorenz Pope Research Fellow, McLean Hospital. Develop and manualize a treatment
for co-occurring BPD and SUD that incorporates elements of empirically proven treatments,
including Motivational Interviewing and standard relapse prevention counseling for SUD and
Mentalization-based treatment for BPD. The development of the manual will followed by a
piloting and feasibility study of eight patients with co-occurring BPD and SUD in an individual
therapy setting. Primary outcome measurements will include treatment retention, patient
satisfaction, therapist adherence, self report of substance use and borderline behaviors and results
of urine drug screens and breathalyzer testing. At the completion of the study, we expect to have
produced a manual for co-occurring BPD and SUD for use in a subsequent larger trial that will
test the efficacy of this treatment.
Private Outpatient Practice. Clinical duties include assessment and treatment of
outpatients with a broad range of substance abuse and co-morbid psychiatric disorders.
Psychotherapy patients are seen biweekly, weekly or twice-weekly. Psychopharmacology
patients are seen twice a month, monthly or every three months.
