“Jim replied, ‘Do whatever you need
to do.’” Although it was his day off,
fellow Riverview OB/GYN Robert
Penney, M.D., came in to assist
Dr. Smolinsky with the surgery.
A Turn for the Better
In the operating room, there was
finally some good news. Instead of
a hysterectomy, Dr. Smolinsky was
able to perform a bilateral uterine
artery ligation with B-lynch uterine
compression sutures — a reversible
procedure. It clamped off the
blood flow and forced the uterus to
contract while preserving Christine’s
ability to have more children.
When Christine awoke later
that night, her first thought was of
Connor. After hearing he was fine,
she began to comprehend what she
had been through. “I’d only heard of
things like this in movies and on TV.
It’s not something you’d think could
happen to a healthy woman.”
The Road Ahead
Christine saw and held Connor the
next day, and they went home from
the hospital a week later. Slowly
but surely, they recovered, both
physically and mentally. Christine
returned to her human resources job
in December 2011.
Such complications can arise
without warning, making the choice
of birth location critically important,
Dr. Smolinsky says. “In Christine’s
delivery, nobody expected such a
dramatic labor, but sometimes we
cannot anticipate what life will bring
us. It’s important to be in the right
place — in this case, a hospital with
leading-edge treatment and the right
people there 24 hours a day.”
Christine agrees. “When I saw
Dr. Smolinsky for the first follow-up
appointment, I cried in her arms.
Every day, I kiss and hold my two
boys and think, ‘I’m so grateful they
still have their mommy.’” •
