Mayors Message
I’m pleased to take this
opportunity to wish everyone in
the Port Adelaide Enfield region
the very best of the 2007 festive
season and to thank you all for
your support during my first 12
months in office as Mayor.
It has been a wonderful year,
strengthened by the guidance,
support, and encouragement
I’ve received from my fellow
Councillors, the staff and
administration at the City of
Port Adelaide Enfield and the
wider community.
As well as working to make
planning and policy decisions
to benefit the community, being
Mayor has given me the honour
of observing upfront how much
effort is put into the community
by so many individuals and
groups. It is truly inspirational
to see what people are achieving
here in business, sport, the arts
and beyond. As invaluable are
the many volunteers who put in
hours of their time to support
others, and our professional and
dedicated staff also deserve thanks
and recognition.
One of the major highlights of
the year for me was the inaugural
Port Festival, which was a huge
success and part of the economic
and social renaissance of our area.
I look forward to another
standout year in 2008 for Port
Adelaide Enfield, growing on what
we have built in the past
12 months.
Thank you one and all for your
support this year. For me, it’s been
like Christmas every day. I wish
you and your families a happy
and safe festive season and a
wonderful 2008.
Sue Spicer wants Port Adelaide
Enfield residents to know that the
Council’s community bus fixed
route service isn’t only for seniors.
“It’s not just for the elderly,
although it’s a fantastic service
for our older residents,” she says.
“It’s for anyone who can’t access
public transport, has limited
income, finds it hard to get
around, doesn’t feel like driving,
or enjoys a bit of company”.
Sue is the Co-ordinator of Port
Adelaide Enfield’s Community Bus
Service and she’s passionate about
the work – to the point that she
recently got her own bus licence,
in case she ever needs to help out.
She relishes working with her
team of 30 volunteer bus drivers,
who operate the six fixed circuits
through the Council area. The
bus drivers ferry passengers from
as far afield as North Haven and
Exeter to Gilles Plains, Klemzig
and Sefton Park on their way
to shopping centres, libraries,
doctor’s surgeries and other
destinations.
Ward Councillors
Port Adelaide Enfield Council comprises a Mayor and 17 Councillors, distributed around seven wards that take in the whole of the city.
These are your representatives, your voice in Council on matters that concern you in your area, and they are the people who make the policy decisions that guide the Council’s
administration in its daily work. If you have any concerns that should be brought to the attention of Council, please contact one of the elected members in your ward.
Holden
Hill
Dernancourt
“It’s lovely
working with
such a great
bunch of
volunteers,”
she says. “It’s
also a very
personalised
service for
residents.
If someone
rings up and
says that they
live in one area
and need to get
to another area,
I have the time
to talk them
through the
timetable and
explain how to
use the service”.
“A lot of other Councils’
community buses run on an “as
needs” basis, and passengers have
to ring up and book. Ours run
on fixed circuits, so people can
just make a spur of the moment
decision to go somewhere and
know the bus will travel down
specified streets at the times noted
on the timetable”.
If you’re looking for a
good book to read these
holidays The Big Book
Club is the answer.
The club was established
Time to consider installing a rainwater tank
With water supply an
increasingly important issue as
drought and water restrictions
continue to be experienced
throughout Australia,
rainwater tanks can provide a
valuable supplement to water
supply for household use.
Rainwater tanks offer many
advantages. They can be used
at any time and there are no
restrictions on the amount
of water you can use. They
reduce demand on water
storages and mains water
supply, are free of chlorine and
provide an emergency supply
should there be a problem
with the mains water supply.
Most importantly they reduce
stormwater runoff.
Before you install a rainwater
tank either at home or at
work, you should talk to your
local rainwater tank supplier
and consider which tank is
suitable for your needs.
Health and planning
requirements must also be
considered before installation.
Regular maintenance of
rainwater tanks must also be
considered, including clearing
leaves from gutters and tank
entrances, checking to see
that insects or small animals
cannot get inside the tank.
Wetland sculptures highlight consumer waste
A $100,000 public art project
has been installed in the Range
Wetlands at Gillman in a bid
to raise public awareness about
environmental sustainability.
The artwork - a permanent fixture
visible from Dry Creek’s North
Hanson Road - celebrates the
reclamation of a site in which
the nearby hills are built from
discarded waste.
On for young and old
Port Adelaide Enfield’s seniors
got a chance to celebrate their
seniority in style with a special
Port River Dolphin Cruise as part
of the statewide 2007 “Every
Generation – It’s on for young and
old” Festival.
Celebrating the lives and
contributions of older people in
the community, the annual Festival
hosts a range of events and
activities throughout October to
bring together South Australians
of all ages.
Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary
Johanson and Cr Carol Martin
joined about 110 senior residents
on the dolphin cruise,
which featured a
sumptuous buffet style
morning tea as the boat
cruised along the Port
According to Zero Waste SA Chief
Executive, Vaughan Levitzke, the
project highlights the need for
a continued focus on reducing
consumption and the amount of
waste created.
“By propping art against an
industrial landscape built from
household and commercial waste,
we hope to remind Australians
that the level of consumption in
our everyday lives has a direct
impact on the environment,” Mr
Levitzke said.
As one of the entrants in the
Design Institute of Australia’s
(DIA) 2007 South Australian
Design Awards, the Zero Waste
Lifeline project is an initiative of
statutory authority Zero Waste SA.
Constructed from zinc coated
galvanised steel tubing, the
artwork consists of three 6.5
metre-wide ornamental ‘buoys’,
each filled with coloured glass
bottles in metal cages.
“The morning tea was quite a hit,”
said organiser Sue Sharp, Team
Leader of Council’s Community
Services Programs. “A number
of people said they thought they
might get a couple of scones, but
they were amazed at the spread
they got to share.”
“And we all got to see some
dolphins, so no-one was
disappointed,” she said.
Now the second year the cruise
has been staged as part of the
Festival, Sue said many of the
participants were particularly
pleased to be able to see up close
all the developments happening
along the river.
The sculpture has been designed
to represent both the circulatory
system within the human body
and the systems of collection,
recycling and reuse of valuable
natural resources.
Designed by local artists Greg
Healey, Cathoel Jorss, James
Hayter and Gregg Mitchell, Zero
Waste Lifeline was chosen for
commissioning from a shortlist of
submissions, following a March
2006 workshop for 30 interested
sculptors, engineers, architects
Sunnybrae shines on
The weather threatened again
to cloud this year’s Sunnybrae
festival, but sunny skies saw yet
another successful event.
Untiring event co-ordinator Seeta
Gaston said more than 6,000
people attended the 28 October
spectacular at historic Sunnybrae
Farm at Regency Park.
A record 130 groups were
involved in this year’s event,
which had to be organised in
just a few months. Long-time
co-ordinators Seeta and Denis
Robinsons were pleased to
welcome new stall-holders
and entertainers, plus a
number of newcomers onto the
organising committee, building
the future of the popular and
professional event.
With 2007 marking 100 years of
hit, supported by the Transport
Training Centre at Regency Park,
Windsor Gardens Vocational College,
Ninja Kids, Our Lady of Sacred
Heart College and the Port Adelaide
Police Rangers. “The Scouts brought
everything from slippery poles to
Sumo wrestlers,” Ms Gaston said.
Thanks from the organisations to
the City of Port Adelaide Enfield
Council, Sunnybrae Farm lessee
Lui Semola and Nation Hire for
their support.
“The Cultural Calendar aims to
tell some of the stories behind
the faces – stories of pain, joy,
excitement, freedom, separation
and achievement,” Mr Wierda said.
A snippet of the dozen local
people celebrated in the 2008
calendar include 80 year old Phyll
Thomas from Northfield, who has
lived for nearly 60 years in the
area, Aboriginal artists Del Mannix
and Karl Telfer, 17 year old
Sudanese refugee Martin Deng and
Tongan lecturer Tangi Steen.
As well as their own personal
achievements, each of the
participants has contributed
strongly to the local community in
their own ways.
“We hope their stories and spirits
are an inspiration to everyone, and
an affirmation of the richness of the
contribution to improving the lives
of others in the community.
The award will be presented at next
year’s Man Alive! 2008 event, whose
looking forward to receiving new
stories about men that celebrate
The Man Alive! festival, first
staged in 2004, will take place
on Sunday 16 March 2008 on the
Semaphore Foreshore, with Graeme
Goodings as MC.
“Man Alive! is a festival
celebrating the positive
contribution by men
in our community, and
promoting men’s health
and well-being,” Pip
says. “For many people
presentation of the award is
the highlight of the festival
as it acknowledges men
improved the quality of
life for others.”
The event will feature live
a Fling-a-Thong contest
and other fun activities
for everyone to enjoy.
“This bright and colourful
I’ve ever seen, and a great asset -
not only for the people who are
directly involved but the whole
community,” he said.
The award carries a prize of
a SeaLink Travel voucher for
accommodation at either the Ozone
Seafront Hotel, Southern Vales B&B
or Tenshi Beach House.
Pip says if you know a man who
has made the community a better
place to live in by their positive
actions, or a man who has been
important in your life, send in
his story (in 250 words or less)
with a photo. Nomination forms
can be downloaded from the
assisted with the Kaurna text
• Local graphic designer Dani
McLean who brought it all
together and gave much of her
First in world for
graffiti battle
Two specially designed
tricycles – believed to be
the first of their kind in
the world - are opening
a new front on the war
against graffiti in Port
Adelaide Enfield.
The electrically-powered
trikes are being used by
Council’s volunteer graffiti
removal team – the Grafters. They
each have an electric assist drive
and store a first aid kit, drink
bottle, safety cones and a 20 litre
water tank for graffiti removal.
Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary
Johanson said the Grafters have
already done an amazing job over
the past three years, removing
around 37,000 square metres of
tags and pieces of graffiti. And the
new trikes, he said at their official
launch, will take graffiti removal
to a new level.
It’s all part of the Council’s
Graffiti Management Program
that helps reduce the incidence
of graffiti by means of volunteer
support, education and
community consultation.
“We’re determined to minimise
the effects of graffiti that leave
such a terrible scar on our
community,” Mr Johanson said.
The Grafters focus on commercial
and private properties as well
as Council buildings, using
non-flammable solvents and water
based paint to repair the damage.
They recently identified the
6.3km Semaphore Foreshore
as a graffiti hot spot.
Exercise & Christmas
With lots of festive season social
functions to attend, the temptation
is great for people to indulge in lots
of unhealthy food and drink too
much alcohol.
That means it is definitely the
right time to also be scheduling in
exercise to help burn up as many of
those excess calories as possible.
The effects of extra eating can be a
little scary as these figures show:
• Burning off a single slice of
Hawaiian pizza will require 45
minutes of hard riding uphill;
• to burn off one muffin you will
need to cycle strongly for 90
minutes, and
• two large handfuls of potato
chips will have you participating
in a 30 minute high intensity
aerobics class.
A handful of peanuts will take you
2553 steps to walk off - that’s 770
metres on a treadmill. Four jelly
babies equals 1070 steps or 320
metres on a treadmill, and two
pieces of chocolate equals 1786
steps or 536 metres on a treadmill.
That might be enough to persuade
you to eat carefully over the festive
season, but if it’s exercise you
choose instead, then ‘parks sports
and fitness’ can provide the answer.
Stay slim and smart
Now the days are warmer and longer
it’s time to pull out your summer
clothes and try them on for size.
They don’t fit any more? It is so easy
to put on weight and lose fitness in
the winter months, but ‘parks sports
& fitness’ has all the facilities you
need to get back into shape.
There are fitness programs and
activities to cater for all fitness levels
and interests, which will achieve
and maintain your fitness goals.
Our gymnasium is fully equipped
with both pin loaded and free
weights. All memberships include
a comprehensive, personalised
gym program that is specific to
individual fitness levels and needs.
This is extremely important for
those with injuries.
You can choose between the
cardio room with its new, state of
the art treadmills; a group fitness
class including the ever popular
BODYPUMP or BODYCOMBAT;
have a relaxing sauna, aquarobics or
simply take a swim - the ultimate
training session in hot weather.
Flotilla for Kids
bigger and better
The 2008 Flotilla for Kids event,
to be staged on Sunday, 10
February looks set to be the
biggest and best ever, with fun
for all the family.
Organisers are expecting the
largest ever flotilla of boats
to assemble at Outer Harbor
in support of children living
with cancer, with interest from
sponsors also growing.
The 2007 event, which involved
close to 200 boats, raised
$50,000 for Camp Quality and
will help send more than 200
young children and their carers
to a once-in-a-lifetime experience
visiting the theme parks of the
Gold Coast.
Families are encouraged to
be early and secure a viewing
location to cheer on the 2008
Flotilla as it makes it way around
the Inner Harbour. The boats will
head up the Port River from 11am
to parade in front of the wharf at
the Harts Mill precinct at around
12.15pm. Musicians, street
performers and face painters will
provide free entertainment at the
Harts Mill precinct between 11am
and 2pm, with food and drink
stalls also on hand.
Flotilla for Kids founder and
patron, Annie Rogers, said thanks
for the success of the 2007 event
must go to the outstanding
support of the boating community
and a variety of support sponsors,
including the City of Port
Adelaide Enfield and the
Port Centre Coordination
Group (Comprises: Land
Management Corporation,
Newport Quays and the
City of Port Adelaide
Enfield). Among the
Flotilla were crafts
from the Royal
Australian Navy,
Coast Guard
Adelaide, Royal
SA Yacht
Squadron and
the Cruising
Yacht Club
Don’t let what you cook make you crook
More than five million
Australians get sick each year
from eating food contaminated
with bacteria or viruses.
This figure is extraordinarily
high considering Australia has
one of the safest food supplies
in the world – which means the
problem is almost certainly due
to us, consumers who mistreat or
mishandle food.
You can prevent food poisoning
by following four key rules:
Clean: Wash hands with soap,
rinse and dry thoroughly before
starting to cook and after handling
raw meats or vegetables with
visible soil.
Wash and dry chopping boards,
utensils and work surfaces
after preparing raw meats. Use
thoroughly cleaned chopping
board, utensils and crockery
for food that is ready to eat
such as salads and food that
will not be cooked or heated
before being eaten.
Cook: Cook chicken, minced or
boned meats, hamburger, stuffed
meats and sausages right through
until all juices are clear.
Family fun at Chicago Fair
This year’s popular and successful
Chicago Fair in Kilburn was not
only a place for good food and
fun – but good health too.
Among a record 49 stallholders
at this year’s event on 20
Saturday, October was a special
new Wellbeing Space,
which offered massage,
conversations, kids
activities, information
on health services,
drugs and alcohol,
legal information,
gardening tips
and much,
much more.
Defrost frozen poultry and rolled
and stuffed meats thoroughly
before cooking. Always follow
cooking instructions on packaged
foods. Reheat to steaming hot
before eating.
Chill: Keep your fridge at
5 degrees Celsius or below.
Keep perishable food in the fridge.
Refrigerate hot food as soon as
it stops steaming. Refrigerate
leftovers promptly.
Separate: Keep raw meat and
poultry from touching other food.
Keep raw meat and poultry in the
bottom of the fridge or in a sealed
container so it can’t drip onto
other food. Cover all stored food.
Remember, if you are sick, ask
someone else to cook or get takeaway
food – don’t spread your
bugs to others.
By following these tips, you
can help ensure that you, and
people you cook for, are safe
from food poisoning.
Nearly 100 health checks
were also done on the day by
doctors, nurses and allied health
professionals, organised by the
Lions Club of Prospect Blair
Athol and Enfield Community
Health. The Kilburn Blair Athol
Community Action Group, which
organises the annual event, was
also thrilled with the growing
participation of newly arrived
communities, with the Afghan
and Sudanese communities
providing fantastic food stalls
alongside the more established
Chinese community.
“This was a real priority for us
this year and we hope to build
on it in the years to come,”
Bernie McEvoy, Chicago Fair
Organising Committe said. “The
Kilburn and Blair Athol area has
a strong community identity and
the Chicago Fair provides a great
chance for everyone – from the
oldest residents to the newest
and youngest arrivals
- to meet up.”
The large entertainment program,
which ranged from Tongan and
Burundi dancers through to the
Gepps Cross Girls High band and
blues legend Chris Finnen, also
reflected the multicultural nature
of the area today.
Also popular was a wonderful
art exhibition featuring the work
of 160 children from eight local
schools, on the theme of ‘My
place in the community’. This
reinforced the official opening by
Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor
Gary Johanson, who invited
on stage a large group of local
community leaders, to
thank them for
their commitment.
