Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science Approval has been given to establish a Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science within the School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine at Monash University. Forensicare is a key partner in the Centre, which further consolidates the relationship between Forensicare and Monash University that began with the joint appointment of Professor Paul Mullen in 1992, and then Professor James Ogloff in 2001. The Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science will have a national focus on research, teaching, service and practice development. Bringing together researchers, students, academics and clinicians from a variety of disciplines, the Centre will further develop the areas of forensic mental health and forensic behavioural science. A core element of the Centre’s operating practice will be to work to transfer the academic and clinical excellence of the Centre into practice in the health, community services and criminal justice sectors. The Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science has a multidisciplinary profile, with representation from psychiatry, psychology, social work, law, nursing, occupational therapy and epidemiology. The Centre will seek to develop collaborations with relevant and interested health, justice and other industry partners. The Centre will make a vital contribution to the development of best practice models of care and treatment. Importantly, the Centre will have a central role in developing an appropriately skilled workforce to optimise the delivery of health, social and criminal justice services. The research, teaching and clinical outputs of the Centre will provide a framework for the development and revision of public policy regarding the need for public safety, and seek to reduce levels of victimisation of some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Dr Stuart Thomas Staff Dr Stuart Thomas, an epidemiologist specialising in forensic mental health, has been appointed Lecturer, Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science. A number of other clinical staff from Forensicare hold honorary or casual appointments in the School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine and will be employed by the Centre. These include Dr Kylie Thomson, Dr Michele Pathé and Dr Michael Daffern. Dr Stuart Thomas Prior to his appointment to the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science, Dr Thomas was a Lecturer in the Department of Forensic Mental Health Science at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. He has previously been the recipient of a highly regarded Research Training Fellowship with the Department of Health in the United Kingdom, and was awarded his Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Services Research in August 2005, for his study examining levels of unmet need among mentally ill prisoners and forensic mental health patients. He previously studied for his Masters of Science (MSc) Degree in Epidemiology at the internationally renowned London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and holds a Master of Laws (LLM) qualification in Criminal Justice, awarded with Distinction, from the University of Kent at Canterbury. Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma The Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in Forensic Behavioural Science have been approved by the University to commence in the 2007 academic year. The Certificate in Forensic Behavioural Science (FBSci) commenced in March 2006, with twenty six students from a range of agencies and professional backgrounds enrolled in the course. These courses in forensic behavioural science have been developed to enhance the knowledge and skills of professionals working with people displaying antisocial and criminal behaviour. They cover assessment, treatment and management issues and will assist professionals to incorporate ‘best practice’ principles into their own work practices. Modules of the courses include fundamentals of forensic behavioural science, the role of mental health in criminal offending, mental health and the correctional system, developmental aspects of forensic behavioural science, the assessment and management of problem behaviours, advanced risk assessment and risk management, forensic aspects of personality and its disorders, research methodologies and psychiatric nursing in the forensic context. The Graduate Certificate will be awarded upon the successful completion of 4 of these modules, and the Graduate Diploma upon successful completion of 8 modules.
