Description of <strong>Saferworld</strong>:<br />
<strong>Saferworld</strong> is an independent non-governmental organisation that works to prevent and reduce violent conflict and<br />
promote cooperative approaches to security. We work with civil society, governments and international<br />
organisations to encourage and support effective policies and practices through advocacy, research and policy<br />
development, and through supporting the actions of others.<br />
The organisation has estimated income in 2012-13 of £8 million and is funded by some 35 donor contracts from<br />
governments, the EC and other bodies. Our head office is in London and we have Country offices in Kenya,<br />
Uganda, South Sudan and Nepal, as well as working through partners in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.<br />
<strong>Job</strong> Purpose:<br />
The interim role is designed to focus on immediate challenges to review current systems and streamline<br />
processes, improve management reporting and build staff skills. At the same time, good financial records and key<br />
controls must be maintained.<br />
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

Manage London-based team responsible for keeping financial records and performing financial<br />
procedures (receipts, payments, petty cash, payroll). This includes oversight of overseas financial reports<br />
Lead development and maintenance of a robust financial controls (bank reconciliations and other control<br />
accounts and financial reporting etc)<br />
Manage performance of Sage 200 ledger accounting system and OBDC (Open Database Connectivity)<br />
reporting via Excel. Lead improvement and system enhancement work, ensuring good housekeeping<br />
Lead reporting to <strong>Saferworld</strong> colleagues and donors with a focus on optimal performance<br />
Manage London payroll<br />
Effectively organise and manage internal and external audits<br />
Produce statutory accounts and manage audit<br />
Team development<br />

Develop strong relationships with all <strong>Saferworld</strong> colleagues (Regional offices and London) to enhance their<br />
understanding of finance and build their knowledge<br />
Focus on skills and knowledge development with London staff (Sage, Excel). Assist with development of<br />
regional finance staff<br />
Manage team in building of <strong>Finance</strong> staff and build their knowledge and understanding of donor reporting,<br />
working closely with the Funding team
PERSON SPECIFICATION<br />
Essential requirements:<br />

A recognised accounting qualification (CIMA, ACCA, ACA, etc)<br />
At least 5 years’ experience in financial management<br />
Experience of improving financial systems and processes<br />
Experience of computerised accounting software and an aptitude for system improvements and<br />
developments. Knowledge of Sage 200<br />
Knowledge of UK taxation and payroll operation<br />
Experience of working with a diverse range of finance and non-finance colleagues including overseas<br />
offices<br />
Desirable requirements:<br />

Experience of working in a non-governmental organisation<br />
Experience of training colleagues with IT and financial processes<br />

There are 28 holidays a year (Jan-Dec) pro rata in addition to relevant public holidays<br />
Standard working week is 37.5 hours.<br />
