A Look at Rosemere
By Marge McCord
June and July are two of the nicest
months of the year. June takes in Fathers’
Day, and this year our town will
have the honour of welcoming the Canadian
Peony Exhibition. At that time,
peonies will be in full bloom on the new
pennants enhancing our territory. These
pennants can be purchased at the town
hall and municipal library. They are
produced from a translucent weatherresistant
fabric. Poles and wall supports
can also be purchased.
Another interesting annual event is the
Rosemere Secret Gardens Tour on Sunday,
July 14. Tickets are available and
on the day of the tour you will receive a
map, etc.
There will also be music to add a note
to the harmony of the town’s gardens.
Profits from this event are donated to
Les Petits Plaisirs, a respite care organization.
Many other things will be taking place –
swimming, tennis, etc. You can even
sail down the river on a motorized pontoon
boat for 90 minutes with a native
interpreter, criss-crossing history and
ecology. There is also an evening cruise
on Fridays and Saturdays during July
and August. For further information
please call Eco-Nature at 459-622-8050.
A reservation is necessary for all boat
outings.
Volunteering is a great way to spend
one’s time. The money raised or time
given helps many people and organizations.
High school teenagers are also
giving of their time and going to shelters
in Montreal to help feed the needy.
Each year, there are seven municipalities
– each choosing their volunteer of
the year. The municipalities are Blainville,
Rosemere, Lorraine, Bois de Filion
and Ste-Anne-des Plaines.
This year’s volu
n t e e r f o r
Rosemere is
Lucille Tetreault,
a long-time resident
who is still
doing her thing
w i t h t h e
Rosemere Volunteer
Services. On
Wednesday, April 24, the seven chosen
were feted at the Lorraine Cultural Centre
with their guests and a cocktail
party took place. Our congratulations
go out to Lucille. She deserves it. Each
volunteer of the year received a special
pin and a plaque.
On Thursday, May 30, the Rosemere
Volunteer Services held their Annual
General Meeting with reports, the introduction
of new members and the slate
of officers for the new year. The boutique
closed on May 30, and will reopen
in September. Lunch was served
after the meeting.
The 47 th Canadian Ski Marathon
February 9-10,
Started as a Centennial Project, 47 years
ago, the Canadian Ski Marathon (160
km long) was successfully organized as
a unique, two day event of Cross Country
Ski Participation for five year olds
and over. Some actually do the whole
distance and sleep in the snow. Numerous
residents in the Rosemere, Lorraine
areas continue to participate over the
years. Pat Donvito (former Councillor
for Rosemere), and Bill Pollock (School
Commissioner for Sir Wilfred Laurier)
won the Silver medal for Jim Quarles’
Memorial Trophy this year. Sue
Quarles was on a
team that won the
Bronze. Henry
Andres formerly
from Lorraine was
on the team as well.
Another team of
participants, also
formerly from
Rosemere, Peter
and Don DeGroot
and Evan Hazel came all the way from
BC. While the Federal Government
wants to celebrate Canada’s 150 th in
2017 with some new events and ideas, it
would be nice if they supported what
has been going on for 47 years. Sadly
at Christmas time one of the key supporters
of the long time CSM supporters,
Leo Weiss from Lorraine, passed
away suddenly. Leo along with his
wife Marianne encouraged many to
participate in this event.
Thanks to Sue Quarles for the above.
Sympathies
Our sympathy goes to Carla Stapensea
and family in the loss of her husband
and their father, Roc, for many years a
resident of Rosemere.
Thomas Wallace, long-time resident of
Rosemere before he moved to Beaconsfield,
passed away. Our sympathy goes
to his wife, Alice, his three children and
three grandchildren.
You have probably heard of people
having cortisone shots. In case you did
not know, it is a compound extracted
from the cortex of the adrenal gland of
animals or produced synthetically and
used in treatment of diseases such as
arthritis. It is also given orally.
Last but not least: this paper may cease
publication in a year due to lack of
funding from provincial government
organization. All of the people working
on the paper are volunteers but the
printing of it is not free. The committee
in charge have talked about fundraising
and are looking for ideas. If you
come up with something, please call me
at 450-437-5231 and I will pass your
ideas on. Many thanks, Marge.
