DONORS Because they were impressed with the care their daughter Sadie received from Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Rob and Vicky Wood decided to support the hospital financially. The Woods are members of the Ruth Beall Society, a group of individuals who have committed to support the hospital through wills or other estate plans. Rob and Vicky Wood, parents of an ACH patient, decided to name Arkansas Children’s Hospital as a beneficiary of a life insurance trust. Through this gift, the Woods became members of the Ruth Beall Society, a group of individuals who have named ACH and the ACH Research Institute in their estate plans. Personal Experience Drives Wood Family’s Giving to ACH ■ Kila Owens When Rob and Vicky Wood’s youngest daughter Sadie was 6, she complained of a sore finger. “At the time, we kind of brushed it off, thinking she had a bug bite or something else that would go away on its own,” Rob says. “When the pain in her finger persisted, we decided to take her to the pediatrician.” At the pediatric clinic in Fayetteville, the Woods’ hometown, the doctor made a startling diagnosis. Six-year-old Sadie had arthritis. “We thought, ‘Arthritis? Can he be serious?’” Rob says. “We had never heard of a child having arthritis.” The pediatrician referred Sadie to Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Once at ACH, the Woods learned more about the disease. Sadie had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, a long-term, chronic disease resulting in joint pain and swelling. Sadie began treatment immediately, visiting the hospital every six weeks for checkups, evaluations and routine blood tests. Once her arthritis symptoms were fairly controlled, she decreased her visits to four times a year. During the past 10 years, Rob has witnessed the care his daughter received at ACH. “Sadie always received first-class treatment,” he says. “Arkansas Children’s Hospital has always provided excellent care to Sadie and to thousands of other children with a variety of other illnesses or injuries.” In 2007, Rob inherited some money he was not expecting. With this money, Rob and Vicky established a trust that, upon his death, would provide funds to ACH. The gift made the Woods eligible for the Ruth Beall Society, which is made up of individuals and families who have included ACH in their wills, trusts, insurance policies, retirement plans and other estate plans. 16 “We talked it over and just felt that it was right,” he says. “We want to make a difference for children, so some of the money will go to Arkansas Children’s Hospital.” Rob, who has five children, seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, wanted to make sure his family was taken care of, while also providing funds for well-deserving charities. “We wanted to be able to take care of our kids and grandkids, while also supporting a charity we know does great work,” Rob says. “Arkansas Children’s Hospital has given my family so much. We are happy to give back.” The Ruth Beall Society You can change children’s lives by including Arkansas Children’s Hospital in your estate plans. The Ruth Beall Society, named after the second superintendent of the hospital, is an organization of individuals, couples and families whose wills, trusts or other estate plans include ACH as a beneficiary. Over the past few years, hundreds of individuals, many of them of modest means, have left meaningful legacies for children’s care at ACH through the Ruth Beall Society. AUXILIARY GROUPS Five-Night Phone-a-Thon Raises More Than $103,000 for ACH R ecently, several volunteers came together to call for a cause. In March, more than 200 people volunteered their time during the Committee for the Future Phone-a-Thon, held on the ACH campus. The five-night event, with volunteers calling past hospital donors and asking them to continue their support, added a new texting campaign, which encouraged donors to send a text message and automatically donate $10 to the hospital. Special thanks to all members of the Phone-a-Thon committee, including Rogers Cockrill, chair, and Robert Klein, co-chair. Committee for the Future is a group of young professionals in central Arkansas who raise funds and awareness for Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Arkansas a la Carte a Tasty Success for ACH Auxiliary Food and fun were on the agenda at Arkansas a la Carte, held in April at Chenal Country Club. The food-focused event, which featured tastings from more than 20 central Arkansas restaurants and caterers, raised more than $65,000 for Arkansas Children’s Hospital. More than 375 people attended Arkansas a la Carte and enjoyed all kinds of treats – from sushi to cupcakes, soup to barbecue. Live music was provided by Josh Green and guests enjoyed a silent auction filled with goodies of all shapes and sizes. The auction raised a record $33,000 for the hospital. Arkansas a la Carte is presented by the ACH Auxiliary. Sponsors of this year’s event included Jones and Son Fine Jewelry, BancorpSouth, Burge’s In the Heights, Commerce Title, Cromwell Architects and Engineers, Kinco Constructors, OneBanc, Rebecca Rice & Associates, Capital Bank, Honda World, Pathway Financial Management and Pat Riley at the Little Rock Athletic Club.
