Tom Kempinski Writer Tom Kempinski’s career commenced as an actor. In 11 years, he was unemployed for only 10 months. During this time his roles included lead parts in Blitz by Lionel Bart (Adelphi Theatre), Love For Love by William Congreve (also at the National Theatre, and starring Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Albert Finney and Lyn Redgrave) and leads in Dingo (Royal Court) and Apollinaire (ICA). As a playwright, Tom Kempinski has written 55 plays of which around 45 have been produced. These include Sellout (National Theatre) for which he also composed the music, Flashpoint (Mayfair Theatre), as well as Duet for One which originally ran for over a year in the West End of London (with Frances de la Tour, to whom he was married, playing the lead) and was made into a film starring Julie Andrews. Duet for One has since played in 46 countries, been nominated for many awards. and won the London Theatre Critics Award for Best Play of the Year. It more recently played a record breaking year long run in Paris with Francis Huster and Cristina Reali who won the Stage Actress of the Year Award for this production. Further credits include Separation (nominated for the Olivier For 15 years, Tom Kempinski suffered severe agoraphobia and the condition had a significant effect on his life. He wrote little, his weight increased to twenty four stone and he was unable to leave his home. However, in the past few years and following extensive therapy, Tom has written fifteen plays, lost twelve stone in weight and he and his partner have a daughter. Matthew Lloyd Director Matthew is the Artistic Director of the Actors Centre and the Tristan Bates Theatre. He was formerly Artistic Director of the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, where his credits include the award-winning An Experiment With An Air Pump, Dreaming (and West End transfer), Present Laughter, Waiting for Godot, The Way of the World, The Critic, An Experienced Woman Gives Advice, Two Clouds Over Eden, All’s Well That Ends Well, The Fall Guy, A Moon for the Misbegotten, and So Special. He was also Associate Director of Hampstead Theatre, where his credits include the multi-award-winning The Fastest Clock in the Universe, Slavs!, The Maiden Stone, Vincent River, Apocalyptica, Ghost From a Perfect Place, A Going Concern, Lion in the Streets, The Eleventh Commandment, the London transfer of An Experiment With An Air Pump and the multiaward-winning The Lucky Ones. 13
