With the end of the year fast
approaching, it’s time again
to draw your attention to the
important musical highlights of
2007. The list of contenders for
this year’s Top Ten Music News
Headlines are printed on page 15,
together with the polling form.
2007 has seen several notable musical anniversaries. Over the
months, names such as Grieg, Elgar and Tan Dun have cropped
up frequently on Radio 4, and this month, we are rounding off
the year with two more - Sibelius died in 1957, David Gwilt is
commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of the Finnish
music giant with a 4-part series – Sibelius Saga.
It’s also the 60th anniversary of the Aldeburgh Festival, a major
UK music festival founded by composer Benjamin Britten, tenor
Peter Pears and librettist Eric Crozier. To celebrate this historical
landmark, Radio 4 brings you 4 concerts produced by the BBC
which will be broadcast every Friday evening at 8.
On the subject of anniversaries, this year’s Christmas Concert in the
Park is entitled – For the Beauty of the Earth and features famous
anthems and carols by the English composer John Rutter, as well
as his setting of the “Gloria”. As in the past two years, we predict
an overwhelming audience response, so this year admission will
be by ticket! Please refer to page 10 for ticket request information.
Seats are limited, but don’t be too disappointed if you cannot
eventually get one. The concert will be broadcast on Radio 4 at
10:30pm on Christmas Eve (to be followed by the Midnight Mass
from St. John’s Cathedral). TV simulcast of the concert will be on
Christmas Day at 11:55am!
For more Christmas singing, tune in to the vocal hour (8 – 9am) on
Sunday mornings to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir which is
greatly admired for its superb sound quality.
Still with the voice, the grand finale of this year’s Music Beyond
Borders will be provided by the golden voice of the Spanish tenor
Aurelio Gabaldon. Gabaldon was a student of the great Spanish
tenor Alfredo Kraus and winner at Operalia, a competition founded
by another Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo.

音 樂 大 事 , 在 第 四 台 的 節 目 中 , 今 年 可 能
你 都 常 常 聽 到 葛 利 格 ( 逝 世 100 周 年 ) 、
艾 爾 加 ( 150 冥 壽 ) 及 譚 盾 ( 50 歲 生 辰 )
的 名 字 。 在 今 年 完 結 之 前 , 第 四 台 最 後 為
你 送 上 兩 個 重 要 的 紀 念 性 節 目 - 紀 大
衛 將 於 一 連 四 集 芬 蘭 傳 奇 中 , 介 紹 逝 世
50 週 年 的 芬 蘭 作 曲 家 西 貝 流 士 ( 1865-1957) 。 今 年 又 適 逢 「 奧 爾

About Zarzuela . . . one of Spain’s best
kept secrets
Zarzuela is Spain’s great contribution
to lyric theatre. It is a special mixture of
operatic and popular song, dance and
spoken word that emerged in the mid-
17th century. Its Golden Age came two
centuries later. Zarzuela is a blend of tears
and laughter that portrays Spanish life in the
19th and early 20th centuries and Spanish
singers generally love Zarzuela because it
is in their genes.
Aurelio Gabaldon career highlights
Aurelio Gabaldon received the “best interpreter
of Spanish music” award at the first “Iberian
Voices” International Singing Contest (Portugal).
He also received an award at the “Francesco
Maria Martini” International Contest (Italy) and
was finalist at the “Toti dal Monte” and “Citàdi
Alcano” singing contests, both in Italy.
2002 Soloist in Haydn’s Stabat Mater at
Baracaldo and Nemorino in The Elixir of Love at
the Teatro Arringa, Bilbao.
2003 Ernesto in Don Pasquale at the
Teatro Romea in Murcia and the Teatro del
Bosque in Madrid.

2004 Don Basilio in The Marriage of
Figaro in Treviso, Italy at the Teatro Comunale.
2006 Mozart recital all’Auditorium
Nazionale di Madrid with the Orquesta
Filarmonía directed by Pascual Osa.
2007 First prize in the Zarzuela category
(male) at Operalia organized under the auspices
of tenor Plácido Domingo. This year, he also
made his debut in Barcelona’s Liceo, one of
Europe’s leading opera venues, where he sang
a concert version of I Puritani (Arturo).
Aurelio Gabaldon will interpret some of
the best-known romanzas (the equivalent
of operatic arias) in the Spanish Zarzuela
repertoire for the final Music Beyond
Borders concert of the season. The pianist
will be Yolanda Vidal.
About Aurelio Gabaldon
In 1997 Aurelio Gabaldon became a student
of world-famous tenor Alfredo Kraus and
continued his studies with Kraus until his
master’s death in 1999. Aurelio has said
he admired his great stature as an artist,
his generosity and his patience when
teaching.
Aurelio has also received master classes
from leading teachers and singers such
as Miguel Barrosa, Renata Scotto, Ileana
Cotrubas, Jaime Aragall and Anna Maria
Pizzoli.

The most popular tenor song in the repertoire. Tongues are wagging in a North-coast
Spanish port about a shady relationship between the young female tavern keeper and
an older man with a bad reputation.
From La picara molinera by Luna: “Pajarin, tu que vuelas”
Carmona has attracted two lovers and does everything in her power to play them
off against one another. Juan cannot rid himself of his obsession, despite Carmona’s
worthlessness. He asks a little bird to tell her of his love.

From Luisa Fernanda by Moreno Torroba: “De este apacible rincón de Madrid”
From an epic set during the 1868 Republican revolution. Ambitious Colonel Javier
explains how he has grown away from his roots in the peaceful suburbs of Madrid.
Should he pursue his military career or remain loyal to Luisa, the sweetheart of
his youth?
From Los gavilanes by Serrano: “Flor roja”
Juan left his native Provencal village as a boy. Decades later, having made a fortune
in the Americas, he returns to his old home. The Sparrowhawks (los gavilanes) are
older men who use their money to force marriage on younger women – a temptation
to which Juan nearly falls prey, though his good sense triumphs in the end.
From El trust de los tenorios by Serrano: “Te quiero, morena”
In The Rakes’ Club (a globetrotting farce), a nameless young Spaniard sings his sparkling
jota to recall his Aragonese homeland.
Albeniz: Rumores de la Caleta (piano solo)
From El huesped del Sevillano by Guerrero: “Raquel”
The Guest at the Sevillano Inn is a swashbuckling love story between a 17th century
court painter and Raquel, the daughter of a Toledo swordsmith. When she is abducted
and imprisoned, her Juan Luis vows to rescue her or die.
From Los Emigrantes by Barrera & Calleja: “Adios Granada”
The singer relates his pain in having to live far from Granada and from the resting
place of his darling.

Watch out for Spanish artists and music in the Monday Concert
(Mondays 8pm, repeated the following Monday 2pm), Concert
from Spain (Tuesday evenings at 8pm) and for these special
features on Sunday Morning on 4 in the final hour between 9am
and 10am.

Amancio Prada (presented by Angel Garralda)
Amancio Prada was born in the
Spanish province of León. He
studied harmony, composition
and guitar under Michel Puig and
Silos Manos in Paris and attended
the Sorbonne. He made his
début in Paris playing alongside
Georges Brassens in December
1973. On returning to Spain in
1975, he settled in Segovia and
focused on composing while also
giving many recitals.
Amancio Prada
His appearance at the Teatro
Real in Madrid in the first
annual Festival de Otoño
(1982), confirmed once more
the unanimous critical acclaim
that had been greeting his
performances up to that point.
The critics drew attention in
particular to the “depth of his
work and his unusual artistic
orientation” or, as Edward CD cover of Canciones del alma
Rothstein put it in the New York Times, “the flexibility of his timbre
and his dramatic capacity on stage.”
Extracts from his first CD book (2002), Songs from the Soul
(Canciones del alma) will be played in this hour of Sunday Morning
on 4. The CD is entirely devoted to the texts of Saint John of the
Cross, renowned for his writings, considered the summit of mystical
Spanish literature and one of the peaks of all Spanish literature.
The recording includes the latest version of the Spiritual Canticle
and five poems set to music by Amancio Prada: “Living Flame of
Love” (stanzas the soul recites in intimate union with God), “For I
know well the spring that Flows” (song of the soul that rejoices in
knowing God through faith), “The Dark Night” (the soul reaches a
high state of perfection, union with God), “I live, but not in Myself”
(stanzas of the soul that suffers with the longing to see God) and
“Word of God” (a Christmas refrain), all of which are the work of
Saint John.
“The Spiritual Canticle” is a poem in which the bride (representing
the soul) searches for the bridegroom (representing Jesus Christ),
and is anxious at having lost him; both are filled with joy upon
reuniting.
In March 2004, Amancio Prada published his second CD book
“Sonnets and Songs from Federico Garcia Lorca”, a compilation of
all his compositions inspired in the unparalleled poetry of Lorca.
The result is an exquisite record in the convergence of the two
artists.
At the end of 2005 “Rosalia, siempre” was released: a tribute to the
poetic works of Rosalía de Castro, always present along his music
career.

to the former Consul General of Spain, Mr. Camilo Alonso-Vega,
who passed away earlier this year –

July – August: Nights in the Gardens of Real Alcazar
The “Nights in the Gardens of the Real Alcázar” festival has been
held every summer since the year 2000, in the unique setting of the
city of Seville. The programme consists of open-air concerts. This
event has come to be one of the summer’s most attractive cultural
programmes in Seville, with recitals and orchestras from Spain
and abroad.

September 15, 2007 – January 30, 2008: Opera Festival
2007 sees the 60th edition of this cultural event in Oviedo,
Asturias. On this occasion it comprises Tristan and Isolde, Thaïs,
Lucia di Lammermoor, Iphigenie en Tauride and Macbeth. Besides
these works, there will be a series of recitals, concerts, big-screen
projections and conferences held at different places in Oviedo, all
related with the operas being performed.
February 2008 – June 2008 (pending confirmation) Las Palmas
de Gran Canaria “Alfredo Krauss” Opera Festival
It is held annually on this island in the Canaries and is a musical
event that pays tribute to the internationally famous Canaries tenor
Alfredo Krauss, born in Las Palmas in 1927, with various opera
productions from the great composers. The programme includes
the first performances of various operas, along with other high
quality pieces, performed by top-level Spanish and international
musicians, with a spectacular array of soloists.
September 2009: 10th Pablo Sarasate International Violin
Competition
The Gayarre Theatre in Pamplona will once again be the venue for
this event which pays tribute to the memory of Navarre violinist
Pablo Sarasate every two years.

Morales en Toledo
Of all of Spain’s Golden Age composers, it was
Cristóbal de Morales who earned the most frequent
praise from his contemporaries. He was known as
“the light of Spain in music”. In this hour of Sunday
Morning on 4 you can hear extracts from the 2005
recording “Morales en Toledo” performed by the
Ensemble Plus Ultra directed by Michael Noone.

of El Escorial and the Cathedral of Toledo. Most excitingly, his

archival researches have recently led to the discovery of many
previously unknown works by such important Spanish Renaissance
polyphonists as Cristobal de Morales, Francisco Guerrero, Alonso
Lobo, and Gines de Boluda. His edition of these works, under the
title of Codice 25 de la catedral de Toledo was published in 2003
by Editorial Alpuerto and Fundacion Caja Madrid.
The 14 works on the disc are all first ever recordings and historically
important - a rare find of great magnitude. Behind this disc there
lies an almost detective-like story involving a recently discovered
manuscript from a dusty archive in the Cathedral of Toledo, which
Michael Noone had the privilege of studying and bringing to light.
After months of painstaking examination of the parchment choir
book, known as Codex 25, he was able to establish without doubt
that it contained 20 works by Morales, of which at least 14 were
either completely or virtually unknown. Eleven of them come from
the newly rediscovered Codex 25, while three
others have been recovered from Toledo’s Codex
21 and Codex 16.
The disc has received international praise
including top ratings from Gramophone and
BBC Music magazines. Tune in to the final hour

This starry holy Christmas Eve (24 December 2007), more than
200 secondary school students will come together at Hong Kong
Park to sing out the joy of Christmas and sing praises to the beauty
of creation. Uplifting choral music by John Rutter will fill the air at
this annual outdoor Christmas Concert organized by RTHK Radio
4. Members of the public are welcome to come along and enjoy
enchanting melodies of peace in the beautiful setting of Hong
Kong Park.
After the resounding success of last year’s “Seasons Greeting in
the Park”, RTHK Radio 4 is proud to present “For the Beauty of
the Earth – Christmas Concert in the Park” this coming Christmas
Eve. 200 plus Hong Kong young singers from 6 outstanding school
choruses will join together and sing John Rutter’s magnificent
Gloria as well as popular seasonal anthems and carols such as: All
Things Bright & Beautiful, The Lord Bless You and Keep You, For
the Beauty of the Earth, Shepherd’s Pipe, Angels’ Carol, Candlelight
Carol and Star Carol.
In the magical starlit setting of Hong Kong Park, conductor Ronnie
Cheng will lead the Diocesan Boys’ School Orchestra, along with
a combined chorus including the Diocesan Girls’ School and Boys’
School Choir, Wan Yan College School Choir, Rosaryhill School
(Secondary Section) Choir, Heep Yunn School Choir and Carmel
Pak U Secondary School Choir.

Aldeburgh at 60

The seaside town of Aldeburgh, in Suffolk
on the southeast coast of England, was a
major port and shipbuilding centre during
the sixteenth century (Sir Francis Drake’s
flagship “Golden Hind” was built there). But
its river silted up and its commerce moved
elsewhere. It might be a little known fishing
village today like many others, except that
the poet George Crabbe was born there
in 1754. His poem The Borough, loosely
based on life in his hometown, became the
source for Benjamin Britten’s opera Peter
Grimes – the work that made Britten’s reputation
around the world.
Britten ended up settling in Aldeburgh, and
in 1948 – three years after the première of
Peter Grimes – together with his partner
and muse, the tenor Peter Pears, and librettist
Eric Crozier, he founded a music festival
there, which ever since has been a Mecca
for the world’s music lovers every June.
The Aldeburgh Festival was intended originally
to be the home of the trio’s English
Opera Group; the first festival featured Britten’s
opera Albert Herring and the première
of his St. Nicholas cantata, as well as performances
by pianist Clifford Curzon and
the Zorian String Quartet. It soon expanded
its reach to include poetry readings, drama,
lectures and art exhibits, but its primary
focus has always been music, and particularly
the music of Benjamin Britten. Britten
was not only England’s leading composer
of the later twentieth century; he was a
superb pianist who specialized in chamber
music and vocal accompaniment, and
might have become one of Britain’s leading
conductors had he chosen to pursue that
discipline more than occasionally. As it is,
his recordings of such works as Bach’s St.
John Passion, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius
and a number of Mozart symphonies
remain prominent in the catalogue.
The Aldeburgh Festival very quickly outgrew
its original home, and the historic
Maltings in the neighboring village of Snape
was bought and converted into a suitable
Aldeburgh Music Festival’s performance venue – Snape Maltings Concert Hall

hall, opened in 1967 (and re-opened, after
a fire, in 1970). The Festival’s unique character
owes much to its rural setting and
to being the principal legacy of Benjamin
Britten. Since his death in 1976, the Festival
has been directed by a number of musicians
who had been close to him, such as
Peter Pears and the conductor Steuart Bedford,
and musicians who, in their versatility,
emulated the founder, such as pianist Murray
Perahia and the present artistic director,
composer-conductor-pianist Thomas Adès,
whose career until now in so many ways
recalls that of Britten himself. Like Britten,
Adès was a composition prodigy, winning
a long-term recording contract with EMI
in his early twenties, and his works have
been championed most notably by Simon
Rattle. But already in 1990, at age nineteen,
Adès had been runner-up (as a pianist) in
the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year competition,
and he has continued to be active
as a performer.
To celebrate sixty years of the Aldeburgh
Festival, Radio 4 will be broadcasting during
December four programmes from the
2007 Festival. On the first program, Thomas
Adès leads the Philharmonia Orchestra
of London in a program of Liszt, Busoni
and Respighi, as well as the world première
of a suite from his own first opera Powder
Her Face. The opera, about the rise and fall
of Margaret, Duchess of Argyle, was first
produced in 1995.
The second programme is a recital by the
distinguished pianist Louis Lortie, who will
play works by Fauré, Liszt, Chopin, Debussy
and Ravel, among others. The third
programme brings us chamber music from
the award-winning Belcea Quartet, and our
first taste in this festival of music by Benjamin
Britten himself – his Third Quartet,
preceded by Beethoven’s first Rasumovsky
quartet. Finally, baritone Simon Keenlyside,
joined by pianist Malcolm Martineau,
will sing lieder by Schoenberg, Mahler and
Schubert: in all, a fine taste of the variety to
be found each June for the last sixty years
at the Aldeburgh Festival.
“Aldeburgh at 60”, a series of four remarkable
concerts will be broadcast on Fridays
at 8pm with a repeat on the following Friday
at 2pm.

A tribute to the music-making of

“What Sweeter Music” is the title for a
continuing series of Radio 4 programmes
this month, presenting the music of John
Rutter. The title comes from a Christmas
carol of his work, the genre with which he
first made his name. He has written many
carols, and mostly written both the words
and the music for them.
But for this one, the words are from one
of his favourite English poets, Robert
Herrick (1591 – 1674), from a New Year’s
Day masque. They had an original musical
setting by one Henry Lawes, and were
“sung to the King in the Presence at White-
Hall”. To Rutter, the words “seem to sum up
the whole ethos of the carol genre as many
composers and poets have understood it”.
Rutter’s setting was composed in 1987
for the now famous Christmastime annual
broadcast service of Nine Lessons and
Carols from King’s College, in Cambridge.

While still at university, at Clare College,
Cambridge, Rutter began working with Sir
David Willcocks, the legendary conductor
of the King’s College Cambridge Choir.
They jointly edited the popular and widely
used booklet series Carols for Choirs
into an omnibus 100 Carols for Choirs,
published by the Oxford University Press.
More recently, Rutter has been editor in the
continuing Oxford Choral Classics series,
and in England his music is published by
Oxford University Press.
Apart from carol-making, Rutter has by
now made his name with many anthems,
motets and songs that have become wellknown.
He’s also composed more weighty
works like his Gloria, Magnificat and
Requiem, and a variety of commissioned
music for concert halls and churches. He
has a piano concerto to his name, two
operas for children (one with the intriguing
title Bang!), and also for children a number
of entertainments involving music-making.
The international success of Rutter’s Gloria
(first heard in 1974, and to be performed
this Christmastime at RTHK Radio 4’s
Concert in the Park), led to many choral
commissions. To devote more time to
composition and other musical interests,
Rutter left the academic world of Cambridge
in 1979. In 1981 he founded his own choir,
“The Cambridge Singers”, as a professional
recording chamber choir; and he set up his
own record label, “Collegium Records”,
which has published most of his recorded
work. Around Britain and in the USA he
has lectured and conducted numerous
“singing days” for churches, schools and
amateur choirs.
John Rutter’s most successful work to date
has been his 1985 Requiem which was
largely inspired by Gabriel Fauré’s work of
almost 100 years before. The composer had
recently worked on the newly-recovered
Fauré manuscript in Paris, and made a
critical edition of it. The more immediate
occasion for his own Requiem, however,
was the death of his father in 1984. He
wanted to write in a language that his father
might have enjoyed listening to, a “requiem
of our time”(as he wrote), which could be at
home in either church or concert hall.
Much of Rutter’s sacred music is
commissioned. He writes quite a lot of

written, they are all very carefully tailored
in text and music for the people and

Rutter carols and sacred music, some of his
arrangements of other composers’ works,
and his 2002 Mass of the Children (Dec 4),
his song sequence When Icicles Hang (Dec
11), Magnificat (Dec 18) and his Dancing
Day (Dec 25), an arrangement for harp and
children’s voices of the words and original
music of six very early carols.

The picture of the elderly Sibelius with his
shining bald head and stern lines around
the mouth make him out to be as craggy
as a rock, as frosty as a Finnish winter and
as withdrawn as the stillness of a Northern
pine forest. In his youth, however, he had
plenty of hair, and a splendid moustache.

The transformation came about for several
reasons. To begin with the young Sibelius
learned the violin, encouraged by an uncle,
and also began composing. The early
compositions are all, naturally, based on the
classical models which he had experienced
himself through playing and hearing them.
As many another Scandinavian composer
students (such as Grieg) he then studied in
Germany, but found his teacher pedantic,
and excessively demanding in matters of
formal construction. Later, in Vienna, he
was to find a more sympathetic hearing
from Karl Goldmark.
He came from a Swedish-speaking family.
Finland had for many centuries been
under Swedish rule. Although the
country had been an autonomous
grand duchy governed by Russia
since 1809 the two languages were
Swedish and Finnish. Swedish was
the language of the leaders of society
and government, of those with social
power. The majority spoke Finnish.
During Sibelius’ time there was
much debate about “Finnishness”
and about Finnish culture. Sibelius,
like many other composers about
this time, sought inspiration from
the culture of his own folk, and this
manifested itself in the epic Kalevala,
which had been taken down from the oral
tradition and published in 1835. This folk
poetry and music, which Sibelius described
as having “sonorous, strangely melancholy
monotony”, was to have a profound effect
on Sibelius’ music. From this basis he forged
a style which as Finnish to the core in both
melodic curves and harmonic background,
and also in rhythm.

Although very quickly becoming Finland’s
premier composer and artist, he was
aware that this style was perhaps not really
understood beyond his country’s borders.
In his Symphonies he attempted to forge a
synthesis between the Finnish aspects and
what in the world at large were understood
to be the characteristics of “great” music.
The difficulties these two sides to his music
led him to cease publication of big works
after 1926, and eventually lapsing into
complete silence, which lasted until his

death in 1957.
His composing life truly began in 1892
and lasted until 1926, and in this space of
time he produced a host of what are now
realized to be spectacular works – the
most important of which are the seven
symphonies, the violin concerto, and the
tone poems. Along with these are the string
quartet in D minor, a highly characteristic
work, and many songs with piano, some of
which are amongst his finest achievements.
In these works Sibelius, with difficulty,
forged a way of composing that seems
to allow the material itself (usually derived from Finnish
folk music) to make its own way through the works. This
often results in music which gradually moves towards the
revelations of what lay inherent in the earlier material all
the time, in the shape of a definitive melody, giving his
music power and purpose.
Although Finnish folk music and poetry lies at the heart
of the music from 1892 onwards, this does not prevent
it from speaking to the world, even though some of the
symphonies – numbers four and six in particular – seem
to inhabit a very strange place. In a series on Sibelius in
December, to be broadcast on Friday evenings at 7, I will
lead you through his life and compositions.

Productions on Screen
From December 2, opera-lovers can enjoy
productions by “La Scala” on the silver
screen! In partnership with a digital film
producer and distributor, “La Scala” will
present five of its productions, once a month
by using high-definition video and audio
devices. “Cinema alla Scala” will also join the
“La Scala” and present one production by
the Teatro La Fenice, Venice. Operas show
on the screen include: Wagner’s Tristan
und Isolde, Verdi’s La Traviata, Donizetti’s
Maria Stuarda, Verdi’s La Forza del Destino,
Puccini’s Il Trittico and La Rondine.

In this month of festivities, our repertoire
includes masterpieces created for
merriment and rejoicing as well as heartwarming
favourites in the operatic tradition
of Christmas and new year celebrations.
December 2: Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeri
When this farcical comedy was first
performed in Venice, Gioacchino Rossini
(1972- 1868) was 21 years old. It was an
immediate success with the audience
demanding encores of almost every number
in the score.
The plot is said to be based on a newspaper
story reporting the adventures of an Italian
girl stranded in Algiers after shipwreck.
The recording chosen by Rupert Chan
features coloratura mezzo soprano Agnes
Baltsa in the title role, together with a strong
cast consisting of bass Ruggero Raimondi,
tenor Frank Lopardo, and baritione Enzo
Dara. Claudio Abbado conducts the Chorus
of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna
Philharmonic Orchestra.

9 December: Charpentier’s Louise
Premiered in 1900, Louise by Gustave
Charpentier (1860-1956), who wrote both
music and libretto, was an enormous
success, with over a hundred performances
given at the Paris Opera during the first year
of its existence. It remains a unique French
naturalistic opera depicting the everyday
experience of ordinary people in a highly
evocative picture of contemporary Parisian
life.
The role of Louise, a factory girl torn
between love and filial duty, is sung by
soprano Ileana Cotrubas. Tenor Placido
Domingo portrays her lover Julien, a
struggling young poet, the Ambrosian
Opera Chorus and the New Philharmonia
Orchestra give a fine performance under
Georges Prêtre.

Menott’s Amahl and the Night Visitors

The Boy who Grew too Fast
These entertaining short operas make up
an interesting triple-bill for pre-Christmas
enjoyment.
Amahl and the Night Visitors is among
the best known of all Menotti operas.
Originally written for NBC television and
first performed via broadcasting in 1951,
it is now an established Christmas piece
offered by many opera houses including the
Royal Opera at Covent Garden where our
recording was made under the composer’s
supervision.

Amahl is a crippled boy who is miraculously
cured after a visit of three kings from the
orient who are on their way to Bethlehem
to seek a new-born child. Rewarded for his
honesty and generosity, Amahl is able to
walk in the company of the three kings to
visit the manger where the infant is born.
Amelia al Ballo (literally means “Amelia goes
to the Ball”) was modelled after the comic
intermezzi of the 18th century but written
in a post-Puccini musical idiom. Menotti
wrote his own libretto both in English
(Philadelphia 1937) and Italian (La Scala
Milan 1954). It is a farce about Amelia’s
determination to attend a ball despite the
fact that her husband has just shot her lover,
and a huge confusion is being created by
the police and the neighbours.
The Boy who Grew too Fast is an actionpacked
drama for children. Sung in English,
the opera tells story of an over-grown boy
who has been restored to normal size. To
stay normal, he must conform with all other
children in all ways. When a terrorist bursts
into the school, he is the only one who was
the courage to protect the rest of his class.
Thus, by not confirming, he resumes his
extraordinary large size, but he is glad to
remain what he truly is.

with a work by Johann
Strauss the second.

of numerous opera
productions in
Hong Kong.
(literally means “The Bat”), acclaimed to
be the crown jewel of the Golden Age of
operetta.
This is a work created solely for the
audience’s delight and pleasure. Its three
acts provide for hilarious domestic intrigue,
a high society ball, and a wild champagne
party in a jail-house.
We shall be treated to a feast of glittering
waltzes, polkas and czardas with a cast
featuring Julia Varady, Lucia Popp, Hermann
Prey and Rene Kollo. The Bavarian State
Opera Chorus and Orchestra are conducted
by the legendary Carlos Kleiber.

An evergreen favourite of opera-lovers
all over the world, this masterpiece
by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) is an
ingenious adaptation of Henri Murger’s
novel Scense de la Vie de Boheme (Scenes
of Bohemian Life). Highly effective in the
theatre, the opera focuses on two parts of
lovers eking out their better-sweet existence
in the Latin Quarter of Paris trying
to make the best of their few happy
moments together in a harsh sad life.
Three of the four acts are set on
the Christmas Eve. The music is
ravishingly poignant and mellifluous,
with brilliant interjections of comic
effects. In this work, Puccini achieved
an almost perfect balance between
gaiety and pathos, irony and passion.
On this occasion, the principal
roles are beautifully sung by Katie
Ricciarelli, Jose Carreras, Ashley
Putnam and Ingvar Wixell under the
baton of Sir Colin Davis.

樂 在 神 州 逢 星 期 四 下 午 三 時 十 五 分 播 出

中 國 音 樂 歷 史 久 遠 , 種 類 繁 多 而 各 有 特 色 , 但 實 際 記 載 下 來 的 不 太 多 。 而 近 代 的 中 國
音 樂 極 度 西 化 , 今 天 要 在 城 市 裡 聆 聽 「 純 中 樂 」 殊 不 容 易 。 我 出 生 在 西 化 後 的 中 樂 年
代 , 自 小 接 受 西 化 的 中 國 音 樂 教 育 , 參 加 西 化 的 中 樂 團 , 後 來 乾 脆 在 大 學 裡
學 習 西 方 音 樂 , 才 驚 覺 原 來 一 直 所 學 習 的 中 樂 其 實 不 是 純 正 的 中 樂 。

究 竟 「 中 國 音 樂 」 是 什 麼 呢 ? 既 沒 有 像 西 方 音 樂 史 般 劃 分 幾 個 時 期 , 我 們 應 該 從 何 聽
起 呢 ?
在 這 兩 個 月 的 「 樂 在 神 州 」 裡 , 希 望 可 以 與 大 家 分 享 一 些 我 喜 愛 的 中 國 音 樂 。 當 中 也
會 淺 談 一 下 我 們 現 在 經 常 聽 到 的 「 現 代 中 國 音 樂 」 是 怎 樣 演 變 出 來 的 。

茅 沅 老 師 與 林 家 琦
茅 沅 是 國 內 最 德 高 望 重 的 作 曲 家 之 一 。 他
所 寫 的 《 瑤 族 舞 曲 》 和 《 新 春 樂 》 , 在
國 內 外 無 人 不 知 、 無 人 不 曉 。 這 位 年 屆
8 1 的 作 曲 家 , 在 上 世 紀 中 葉 畢 業 於 清 華
大 學 土 木 工 程 系 , 由 於 熱 愛 作 曲 而 走 上 音
樂 路 。 已 退 休 2 0 年 的 茅 老 師 , 現 時 除 教
學 外 還 四 處 遊 歷 , 最 近 還 路 經 香 港 。 我 有
幸 跟 他 做 了 一 個 訪 問 , 以 下 是 精 華 節 錄 :

茅 = 茅 沅
林 : 老 師 看 來 非 常 精 神 , 不 知 作 曲 靈 感
又 如 何 呢 ?
茅 : 作 曲 靈 感 和 思 路 可 不 及 年 青 時 活 潑
了 , 但 還 是 可 以 的 。 現 在 年 紀 大
了 , 體 力 不 如 從 前 , 寫 的 都 是 較
簡 單 的 東 西 。 現 在 若 有 藝 團 邀 我 創
作 , 我 都 會 馬 上 寫 。 寫 了 他 們 都 會
用 ; 若 是 寫 自 己 想 寫 的 , 寫 了 也 很
難 找 地 方 演 。 所 以 我 說 作 曲 不 如 畫
畫 的 好 , 畫 好 了 就 成 , 可 以 給 人
看 , 但 作 曲 的 還 得 人 給 你 演 !
林 : 老 師 很 多 作 品 的 旋 律 性 都 較 強 , 有
很 強 的 民 族 意 味 , 但 現 在 的 中 國 音
樂 都 是 以 國 際 化 為 主 。 不 知 道 這 會
否 是 中 國 音 樂 的 出 路 呢 ?
茅 : 我 覺 得 每 種 嘗 試 都 是 好 的 , 我 們 可
做 各 種 的 試 驗 , 但 不 是 每 次 都 會 成
功 。 舊 的 用 多 了 , 大 家 聽 來 會 覺 得
沒 甚 新 意 。 能 做 到 普 及 但 不 平 凡 ,
這 就 很 不 容 易 了 。 很 多 當 代 作 品 都
很 富 音 響 性 , 聽 起 來 很 宏 偉 、 很 有
視 覺 效 果 , 配 上 畫 面 更 佳 , 但 獨 立
來 聽 就 不 甚 了 了 。 但 古 典 作 品 則 是
完 全 為 了 聽 的 , 可 以 跟 你 的 感 情 結
合 起 來 。
林 : 作 曲 家 有 很 多 不 同 的 類 型 。 有 些 是
寫 別 人 想 他 寫 的 , 有 些 是 寫 自 己 想
寫 的 。 不 知 茅 老 師 覺 得 , 當 那 一 類
作 曲 家 較 幸 福 呢 ?
茅 : 我 想 作 曲 家 最 大 的 幸 福 , 應 該 是 他
寫 的 作 品 有 人 演 奏 , 若 聽 眾 喜 歡 那
就 更 好 , 如 譚 盾 , 他 可 說 是 幸 福 的
一 位 ! 正 如 我 剛 才 說 , 搞 音 樂 不 及
搞 畫 畫 的 好 !
林 : 近 年 有 些 編 曲 家 喜 歡 把 流 行 曲 節 奏
加 入 傳 統 作 品 中 , 不 知 老 師 覺 得 節
奏 化 了 的 《 瑤 族 舞 曲 》 和 《 新 春
樂 》 , 會 否 沾 污 了 你 的 創 作 呢 ?
茅 : 這 我 也 倒 不 覺 得 。 一 首 曲 子 流 傳 開
去 了 , 人 家 怎 樣 去 演 , 自 己 也 不 能
作 主 。 能 夠 讓 不 同 的 人 去 喜 歡 它 ,
這 是 很 好 。 好 像 那 些 爵 士 化 了 的 巴
赫 , 我 個 人 覺 得 也 沒 所 謂 , 聽 起 來
自 然 , 又 能 被 那 麼 多 人 喜 歡 , 也 是
好 事 。
後 記 : 茅 沅 老 師 給 我 的 感 覺 是 和 藹 、 健 談
和 真 誠 。 正 如 他 說 , 看 得 開 、 待 人 誠 懇
和 不 爭 名 利 , 是 他 的 處 世 之 道 。 雖 然 已 屆
高 齡 , 但 他 精 神 非 常 、 健 步 如 飛 。 在 這 年
紀 , 他 並 沒 有 停 下 來 , 反 而 繼 續 教 學 , 還
用 電 腦 來 作 曲 、 傳 電 郵 。 他 的 學 習 精 神 和
與 時 並 進 的 態 度 , 實 在 值 得 我 們 敬 佩 !

每 一 年 聖 誕 節 , 我 的 心 情 便 特 別 興 奮 , 因
為 又 可 以 把 搜 集 自 世 界 各 地 的 唱 片 拿 出
來 , 在 節 目 中 與 大 家 分 享 。 原 來 我 的 聖 誕
唱 片 已 超 過 一 百 張 。 我 對 聖 誕 歌 曲 情 有 獨
鍾 , 除 了 旋 律 動 聽 之 外 , 不 同 的 版 本 又 會
帶 來 新 的 演 繹 。 而 各 國 的 聖 誕 歌 都 有 它 們
的 特 色 , 適 宜 親 子 共 賞 , 因 此 我 決 定 在
《 美 樂 集 》 中 與 大 家 分 享 幾 張 我 的 至 愛 。
BURL IVES CHRISTMAS ALBUM
這 是 一 張 我 在 很 多 年 前 買 的 唱 片 , 當 時 並
不 認 識 Burl Ives, 只 是 被 封 面 上 的 照 片 吸
引 , 覺 得 Burl Ives 很 像 聖 誕 老 人 , 給 我 一
種 慈 祥 親 切 的 感 覺 , 加 上 站 在 他 肩 膀 上 那
位 掛 滿 樂 器 的 老 伯 伯 , 為 唱 片 加 添 了 一 些
童 話 色 彩 。 回 家 一 聽 , 簡 直 愛 不 釋 手 , 深
深 被 Burl Ives 的 聲 音 和 風 格 感 動 。 原 來 他
是 一 位 Ballad( 敘 事 曲 ) 歌 手 , 以 親 摯 樸
實 的 演 繹 , 唱 出 聖 誕 的 訊 息 , 而 每 一 首 都
帶 著 和 平 的 希 望 。 在 十 一 首 選 曲 中 , 我 最
喜 愛 「 Happy Birthday, Jesus」 , 透 過 一
