FOREWORD 前言 

Towards the end of each year, 

Radio 4 has always been busy 

with the production of a number 

of projects or concerts. This 

year is particularly eventful as 

revealed in the flashbacks of the two Music Beyond Borders projects, 

and the 50 Years of Enchanting Music concert, which will be simulcast 

on Radio 4 and TVB Pearl on Saturday, 7 November at 2:10pm. 

Presented by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony 

Under the Star will take place at Happy Valley Sports Ground as 

previous years. For the first time, Radio 4 is going to broadcast this 

concert to you live! RTHK’s TV section will also record the programme 

for simulcast with Radio 4 in December. Details will be announced in 

next month’s Fine Music. 

Coming up, on 7 December, RTHK Quartet will celebrate its first 

anniversary with a recital presented by the Leisure and Cultural 

Services Department. Three works of contrasting styles – Classical, 

Romantic and Impressionist, can be heard in the intimate setting at 

City Hall Theatre. A major part of the programme will be Schumann’s 

Piano Quintet, which marks the bicentenary of the great Romantic 

composer. 

More to come, look out for the December FM magazine when details 

of this year’s Christmas Concert in the Park with spotlight falling on 

Bach, and Top 10 Music Headlines will be announced. You may like to 

know that ‘Top 10’ is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. 

And one of the most significant music headlines recently might well 

be the passing of Dame Joan Sutherland at the age of 83. Professor Lo 

King-man’s reminiscence of the great Australian soprano appears on 

P. 12. To pay special tribute to the distinguished singer, Radio 4 has 

prepared for you a historical recording of her performance in the title 

role of Lucia di Lammermoor, which dates back to 1961. 

Finally, I am pleased to inform you that the Radio 4 production, Central 

Conservatory of Music - A True Story of Survival, Striving and Success 

(English) has won a ‘Bronze World Medal’ (Documentary: Culture and 

the Arts category) in this year’s New York Festivals. Congratulations to 

the producer and presenter Jenny Lee, and thanks to everyone who 

contributed towards the production of the programme series, which 

will be repeated in November on Sundays at noon.

今期「美樂集」有三個大型節目的剪影 , 除了「醉人音樂半世 

紀」音樂會外 , 還有無限領域 ( 荷蘭和澳洲 ); 亦反映出第四台已 

踏入每年的秋冬旺季 , 多個特備活動和音樂會將陸續送上。 

由香港管弦樂團主辦的港樂 • 星夜 • 交響曲 , 今年繼續在跑馬地 

舉行。第四台將首次作現場直播 , 即時把繽紛美樂送到府上 ; 香 

港電台電視部也會拍攝這場音樂會 , 並於 12 月份聯同第四台於電 

視及電台同步播出 , 詳情將於下期《美樂集》公佈。 

轉眼間 , 香港電台弦樂四重奏已經一歲大了 ;12 月 7 日 , 他們應 

康樂及文化事務署的邀請 , 在大會堂劇院演出一場 , 當中包括古 

典、浪漫和印象主義風格的作品。其中的舒曼鋼琴五重奏更是特 

別為慶祝作曲家誕生 200 週年而選奏 ! 

第四台的大型製作接踵而來 , 其中包括在平安夜舉行 , 一年一度 

的聖誕園林音樂會。今年的主角是巴赫 , 我們會演出他的多首器 

樂及聲樂名作 ; 而備受音樂界關注的十大樂聞齊齊選昂然踏入第 

二十五年。下期「美樂集」將有詳盡報導 , 敬請留意。 

提到樂聞 , 最近轟動國際樂壇的要聞之一是女高音修德蘭以 83 

歲高齡去世 ; 盧景文敎授對這位一代澳洲女高音的回憶刊於第 12 

頁。為了向修德蘭致敬 , 第四台將播放她於 1961 年首次灌錄的 

全套《拉美莫爾的露契亞》, 當中的「瘋癲場景」, 是經典版本 

中的經典。 

最後 , 很高興與你分享一件喜事 ! 由香港電台第四台製作的 

海納百川 - 中央音樂學院的回顧與 ( 前英瞻文版 ) 贏得本年度紐約 

節「2010 世界銅獎」( 紀錄性文化與藝術組別 )。恭喜節目監製和 

主持李嘉盈 , 亦多謝眾多有份參與製作的人士。這節目將於本月 

份逢星期日中午重播。

That’s how I feel at this particular moment 

J: When you’re communicating music in a performance, it 

is transformative for you, isn’t it? 

E: I feel that when you have this chance to perform, it is a 

living, breathing thing that is happening. It’s unfolding 

just in front of all our eyes, mine included. It hasn’t 

unfolded before for me in this situation of giving a live 

performance, so even I don’t know what’s going to 

happen. That’s why it’s exciting but quite scary as well. 

There’s this sense of the need to push your boundaries to 

just peep round the corner, to see what else you can do 

in that performance. It’s having a sort of faith to try things 

at that moment when it’s so crucial, when, in fact, you 

should be thinking - ‘I’m going to play this exactly how 

I practiced it because I’ll know that works’. Somehow 

that seems to go out of window and you feel that ‘I know 

what works but I am really anxious to try it this way 

because that’s how I feel at this particular moment’. 

So as a player, that’s why I love improvised concerts so 

much, because I just love this feeling of having a blank 

sheet of paper that you actually paint sound on. I am 

really fascinated by that and I’m doing more and more 

of that. That for me, is absolutely stripping yourself bare 

completely and the audience is sitting there without any 

programme notes, they have absolutely no idea what 

your first note is actually going to be or your first sound, 

and neither does the performer, so we’re on equal footing 

there and starting the concert in exactly the same way 

J: You’re in a zone in a way - how do you feel at the end of 

the concert? Do you feel energized? 

E: There have been very few occasions where I felt, ‘my 

goodness that was utterly incredible’. For most musicians, 

to feel afterwards - ‘gosh, what happened there, that was 

extraordinary’ is so rare, but it’s what we actually strive 

towards. There are concerts where you may feel there’s 

‘some bits and pieces going on’, however, you feel 

energized because the energy and presence of people 

and the awareness of what was going on was really 

crystal clear and you really felt part of it. 

But then there are many times when you analyze things 

to death and you want to throw yourself into the nearest

river; you feel down but sometimes there are receptions, 

people to meet, and you have to be nice and cheerful. 

Actually it’s then that you would really like 5 minutes to 

yourself to feel the weight of what’s gone on, to tap into 

your own feelings about what has happened, which can 

often come about maybe hours later, when you actually 

have that space and peace to settle down and gather 

your thoughts. 

I am enjoying getting older 

J: Clearly you’re a musician who is always evolving, 

becoming. Your sense of curiosity is completely 

undiminished- do you feel you’re in a different space 

now, compared to 10 or 15 years ago? 

E: What’s fascinating now is that I am enjoying getting 

older. I’m enjoying the fact that I’m at the age now where 

clearly I can look back as to what has happened, on the 

journey that has happened to date, but I can also look 

forward, whereas before I could only look forward. It’s 

kind of interesting and you feel as though you’re on a 

hill, and you can really see around you whereas when I 

started out, I was just seeing the top of the hill, where I 

liked to aim for, or the route I’d like to go. 

Now the challenge is to keep that curiosity, to really 

understand that a lot of the people you learn things 

from are the new generation, the new blood that is 

coming through. It’s why I am very interested in different 

collaborations. The most recent one was with DJ Yoda at 

the Nordland Festival in Bodø in Norway. He has come 

to a point where he has done more or less all he can 

within the DJ world and the club world and he’s pushing 

his boundaries as far as the visuals and sound. Now he 

has this need to have a look at what has happened in 

his own career. So, the two of us have come together 

with the same view. We both admire each other and 

we are collaborating on this experiment. We need to 

try things out or maybe fall down- who knows! But it 

pushes the boundaries, not just of your own work, but 

those who work with you- the technical team, the sound 

engineers, the visual people, the lighting people, and also 

management as well and I think that’s really important to 

get them thinking outside the box too. 

Travelling with one stick, as opposed to 

a whole bag 

J: It had just occurred to me that Simon Rattle started 

out as a percussionist. Do you ever think you might try 

conducting? 

E: I have thought about it but done nothing about it, because 

the thing that scares me is being quick off the mark as far 

as truly hearing what is going on in the orchestra in terms 

of intonation, picking up on odd notes, and I certainly 

won’t be able to pick that up quick enough. Certainly 

there would have to be a huge amount of trust between

the players and myself, which I believe could be the 

case, but it would need a different type of preparation 

from the orchestral members. 

For example, I would want to see at least one full score 

in the green room or in the canteen, so the players can 

really delve into it. Most of the time players learn their 

own part, but they’re not quite sure how it ties up with 

everybody elses’ until the conductor comes along. So, I 

would like that homework to be done before I step on 

the podium. You get that with conductor-less orchestras, 

and many of the players would sit there with two music 

stands - one with the full score and one with their 

part, and the sense of ownership of the piece is quite 

extraordinary then. It’s a different kind of feel altogether. 

I would love symphony orchestras to have one or two 

concerts in a season without a conductor, because the 

listening skills and the teamwork become heightened 

and so incredible that the audience then listens in a 

different way. So, I think my role would be as a support 

system, rather than imposing something. I can certainly 

guide, suggest, and help where needed, but as far as the 

basics, like making sure the notes are all there, knowing 

who else is playing with you, where you’re going to with 

that phrase, who’s taking over- I want that to be sorted 

out for sure. 

J: Well it’s an exciting prospect, a possibility! 

E: Well the thing about conducting is I would be travelling 

with one stick, as opposed to a whole bag!

作 , 在香港文化中心音樂廳送上「醉人音樂半世紀」— 向陳浩 

才致敬音樂會 ; 演出雖然完結 , 但曲終人未散 , 五十年來我們 

對「醉人音樂」節目的回憶、陳先生的聲音和他介紹過的樂 

曲 , 種種印象自會留在我們心中。 

On October 15 and 17, Radio 4 and the Hong Kong 

Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) jointly presented 50 Years of 

Enchanting Music, a tribute concert for the late Chan Hochoi. 

The two very special concerts were an event that will 

long live in all our hearts as a celebration of a milestone in 

Hong Kong’s music history; but more particularly, of course, 

as a celebration of a very important and influential musical 

life in Hong Kong. Much loved and much missed, Mr. Chan 

Ho-choi and his spirit of inspiration will live on in the power 

of music to inspire and uplift us.

Dutch trumpet player Saskia Laroo took her noted uncontrived romps into ‘nu 

jazz’ with a vivacious blend of hip-hop, jazz, salsa, funk, reggae, and world styles 

in Studio One on 23 September. There were moments of ‘free jazz’ with her trumpet 

echoing around the studio, there was her tribute to John Coltrane, and, she had the 

enthusiastic audience do its part by contributing vocals for the Chinese classic ‘The 

Moon Represents My Heart’ along with her own ‘Jazz Party’.

Saskia Laroo was accompanied on piano by Warren Byrd, who has a long list of 

international credits, tours, and celebrated work to his name. He’s also a vocalist 

with amazing power and showed it on more than a few occasions, including the 

classic ‘Route 66’.

The two certainly have a chemistry that works and they created a jazz party that 

will long be remembered.

Mark Atkins, whose background, Irish-Australian and Yamijiti, is as diverse 

as the music he creates. He has found his calling in bringing Aboriginal 

stories and didgeridoo performance to audiences worldwide. On 7 October 

2010, Hong Kong was added to that list. 

In Studio One, the audience enjoyed Atkins’ Hong Kong debut and in part 

one of the concert, heard highlights from his solo show, Grungada. With 

his own inimitable story-telling technique, video images and didgeridoo 

playing, he brought everyone to the dangers and wonders of the Australian 

outback, including creating the sounds of tornadoes and of an encounter 

between a dingo and an emu! 

The result was an intimate hour, rather like a friend telling stories of his 

experiences and his culture. The audience was entranced - moved one 

moment, laughing out loud the next. 

Then came part two, where Mark Atkins was joined by members of the 

Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (William Lane, viola; Annie Tseng, flute; 

Hani Molles, French horn; and Louis Siu, percussion). It was the first time 

that a ‘Music Beyond Borders’ artist has collaborated with local musicians 

and the result was magic. The soundscape was beautifully haunting at times 

and rhythmically alive at others – and all of it was improvised! 

We hope that everyone took a little bit of Australia home with them that 

night.

The RTHK Quartet was founded by Radio 4 in 2009 with a view to promoting the genre of chamber music and encouraging the 

art of chamber music playing in Hong Kong. Four outstanding musicians, violinists Ayako Ichimaru and Le Hoai-nam, violist Elvis 

Chan, and cellist Laurent Perrin, sharing a common passion for chamber music, are the founding members. The Quartet is active 

in introducing the rich world of chamber music, which includes some of the most profound and powerful music ever written, to 

its audience. 

During its first year, the Quartet has given world premiere performances of commissioned works by David Gwilt and Doming 

Lam. They have also given a number of public performances all over Hong Kong, including the televised Inauguration Concert at 

St. John’s Cathedral, concerts at RTHK Studio One, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and Lingnan University. This summer, for the 

‘Hell Hot! Music Festival’ they gave a performance of Steve Reich’s Different Trains. 

On 7 December, the Quartet will celebrate their first anniversary with a recital presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services 

Department. 



Looking back at this fruitful year, the four players have this to say: 

Ayako Ichimaru (violin) 

‘We are very excited to have our first anniversary concert. We have 

been trying to expand our repertoire and playing together longer and 

we hope to show it in this concert. 

‘For the coming future, I hope we can expand everything: reaching 

more people by playing in different occasions, expanding our music, 

expanding our chemistry, and expanding our reach to overseas!’ 

Le Hoai-nam (violin) 

‘A year after the RTHK Quartet had its inaugural concert, we four 

members are still sharing our common passion for chamber music just 

like we did on the first day. Time flies and I am happy with the progress 

of the first year. Despite our busy schedules of performing, touring, 

and teaching, we have been really pushing ourselves to keep our 

rehearsals regularly every week, building up our repertoire, refining 

our sound. 

‘We are also planning for our next season’s schedule. Hopefully we will 

be able to give more performances in the coming year, encouraging 

the art of chamber music playing in Hong Kong.’ 

Elvis Chan (Viola) 

‘It’s been very rewarding to see the growth in partnership amongst us. 

We’ve reached a point where we no longer need verbal discussion nor 

eye contact to express and exchange musical ideas. Music aside, our 

friendships have blossomed. 

‘I hope our string quartet gets opportunities to participate in international 

music festivals. And it would be nice to perform the entire works of a 

particular composer.’ 

Laurent Perrin (cello) 

‘I enjoyed each of our performances very much as they were each very 

different in nature and in different kinds of venues. St John’s Cathedral, 

Hong Kong Museum of Arts, Lingnan University, and at the Arts Centre. 

The audience was each time very different but very enthusiastic and 

really supportive. 

‘I hope that this year, together with our more “formal” concerts we will 

get to play for some charity events such as hospitals, and also some 

educational programmes. I find it very interesting and rewarding to 

play for different audiences in Hong Kong.’

The home performance – Recital at RTHK Studio One 

在香港電台一號錄播室舉行的音樂會 

2009 年 , 香港電台第四台創立「香港電台弦樂四重奏」。四位創團成員包括小提琴家一丸綾子和李 

海南、中提琴家陳子信 , 以及大提琴家貝樂安。他們分別來自日本、越南、香港和盧森堡 , 今日均以 

香港為家 , 並肩負起推廣室樂的使命。 

成立一年以來 , 四重奏舉行過多場演出 , 除了演奏標準室樂精品 , 亦積極推廣本地作曲家的新作 , 曾演出紀大衛和林樂培的 

作品。演出場地方面 , 四重奏也足跡處處 , 曾於聖約翰座堂舉行由電視轉播的成立音樂會 , 亦在香港電台一號錄播室、香港 

藝術館及嶺南大學演出過 ; 更曾亮相於「好熱 ! 音樂節」, 演奏萊爾的《不一樣的火車》。 

香港電台弦樂四重奏將於 12 月 7 日晚假香港大會堂劇院舉行一週年音樂會。這場由康樂及文化事務處主辦的盛會轉瞬即至 , 

四位成員亦趁此機會寫下對今年繁忙演出的感想 , 還有對未來的期望。

Three students from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts 

Keyboard Department were awarded major prizes at international 

piano competitions held recently in Italy and Norway. Twin 

sisters Chau Lok-ping and Chau Lok-ting won Second Prize at 

the 4th San Marino International Piano Competition, Piano Duo 

Section, while Piao Xingji took Second Prize and three other 

prizes: the Norwegian League of Soloists’ special prize for the 

best performance of the music of Kjell Mørk Karlsen, the Oslo 

Music Teachers’ Special Prize, and the Audience Prize at the 11th 

Grieg International Piano Competition. 

Chau Lok-ping and Chau Lok-ting entered the Academy Junior 

Programme at age five and are currently pursuing the Master’s 

Degree under the tutelage of Eleanor Wong Yee-lun, Academy 

Senior Lecturer (Keyboard/Artist-in-Residence), who has been 

their teacher for over 15 years. Piao Xingji is a Certificate Year 

2 student of Gabriel Kwok, the Academy Head of Keyboard 

Studies.

「第四屆聖馬利諾國際鋼琴大賽」於 9 月底在意大利的聖馬利諾舉行 , 比賽每兩年舉辦一次。 

周樂娉與周樂婷在決賽五強 , 憑演奏莫扎特、蕭邦、布列頓及拉威爾的二重奏作品贏得是次 

賽事的亞軍 , 亦是首次有香港人在這項比賽中獲獎。周樂娉與周樂婷皆為香港演藝學院音樂 

碩士課程一年級生 , 主修鋼琴演奏 , 她們同於 5 歲時被取錄為演藝學院初級音樂課程學生 , 師 

隨演藝鍵盤系高級講師 / 駐院藝術家黃懿倫超過 15 年。 

另外 , 現就讀香港演藝學院鋼琴證書課程二年級的朴星吉 , 亦於 9 月底在挪威首都奧斯陸舉行 

的「葛利格國際鋼琴大賽」(Grieg International Piano Competi 

朴星吉師隨演藝鍵盤樂系主任郭嘉特。他從三十人的首輪比賽晉身八強後 , 除憑著演奏挪威

Australian dramatic coloratura soprano Damn Joan Sutherland has died at her home in 

Switzerland on 10 October, at the age of 83. 

Joan Sutherland was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1926 to a musical family. After winning 

Australia’s most important singing competition, she furthered her study at the Opera School 

of the Royal College of Music, London. In her 40-year singing career, she mastered numerous 

opera roles, including the ones in Verdi’s La Traviata, Rigoletto and Puccini’s Turandot. Above 

all, her performances in Bellini’s Norma and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor were most 

acclaimed. Her frequent stage partner, tenor Luciano Pavarotti, once called Sutherland the 

‘Voice of the Century’, while Montserrat Caballé described her voice as being like ‘heaven’. 

Her nickname of ‘La Stupenda’ (The Stupendous One), was given to her by the famously 

difficult Italian critics in admiration. 

Dame Joan Sutherland brought a new life to the world of bel canto singing, encouraged both by 

her remarkable voice and by her husband and voice-coach, Richard Bonynge, who convinced 

her that this then-forgotten early 19th-century repertoire was perfect for her. Her performance of Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor drew a 

12-minute ovation in her 1961 debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Mr. Bonynge was a major influence in the development 

of her career and he was nearly always the conductor for his wife’s performances. Sutherland won numerous awards for her recordings, 

was made Dame Commander (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 1978, and received a Kennedy Center Honor for outstanding achievement 

in 2004. At the invitation of Prof. Lo King-man and others, Dame Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge visited Hong Kong in 1989 and 

performed for the opening of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. She passed away at her home near Monteux, Switzerland, on 10 October, 

and is survived by her husband and son Adam. 

To pay tribute to the great soprano, Radio 4 will broadcast her precious 1961 recording of Lucia di Lammermoor on 6 Nov (Saturday) at 

8pm in Live on 4, repeating the next Thursday at 2pm. Sunday Opera will air another of Sutherland’s opera, Lakmé by Delibes, on 28 

Nov at 2pm.

有令人羨慕和驚喜的花腔。修德蘭的成功 , 當丈夫的邦寧功不可沒。邦寧透露 , 每當修德蘭要 

演唱歌劇時 , 他會為太太收集和分析過往的女高音如何點綴花腔樂句、歷史上的要求又如何 , 

繼而為修德蘭編寫最切合她演唱的版本。 

有說修德蘭的離世象徵歌劇黃金時代進入尾聲。對此 , 盧景文敎授認為在劇目上能擔大旗的大 

有人在 ; 但具舊式巨星氣派的 , 在這二十年間實在不好找 , 所以從前明星級的崇拜風氣 , 彷彿 

沒落了。但他相信 , 歌唱家的技巧仍會不斷提高 , 好的歌唱家還會陸續出現 ! 

修德蘭曾經贏得多項格林美獎 , 並獲英女王頒發勳章。2008 年 , 她在家中跌斷雙腳 , 之後健 

康日差 , 並移居瑞士休養。她美妙的歌聲 , 將會長留樂迷心中 !

The 2010 Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong, made 

by the Junior Chamber International Hong Kong (JCIHK), honors 

Hong Kong musician and educator Connie Wong Oi-yan. 

Dr. Wong graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong 

in music, with a major in piano performance. She furthered 

her studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) 

where she earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in ethnomusicology. 

Faced with a unique challenge, Dr. Wong has come a long 

way in her music journey. Due to congenital deficiency, she 

was born with only three full fingers. She had to undergo 

extensive orthopedic surgey to correct her fingers throughout 

her childhood. It was only after all her surgery was completed 

at age 13 that she could begin her piano studies. 

Dr. Wong has a strong passion for piano playing and through 

years of tough and persistant learning, her dream of pursuing a 

career in music was realised. During her student years in the US, 

Dr. Wong toured extensively with a music ministry in Southeast 

Asian countries, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the US, 

where she performed as a pianist and keyboard player. 

Dr. Wong currently teaches world music at the Chinese 

University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Academy for 

Performing Arts, Hang Seng School of Commerce, and other 

Hong Kong institutions. With a strong interest in the promotion 

of world music, Dr. Wong is a keen music ambassador and is 

eager to arouse public interest in this genre. What’s more, she 

also teaches piano to the physically challenged. She reminds 

us that we should not look for things that we do not have but 

treasure and be thankful for what we can achieve. To Dr. Wong, 

her ability to play music is her biggest grace from God!

獲選十大傑出青年 

今年「十大傑出青年」的得獎名單上 , 有一個跟音樂界有關的名 

字 — 黃愛恩。黃愛恩博士在香港中文大學取得音樂學士學位 , 師 

隨吳美樂學習鋼琴及葉綺娟學習聲樂。其後 , 她出國深造 , 於加 

州大學洛杉磯分校 (UCLA) 取得民族音樂學博士學位。 

履歷看似平穩 , 但黃愛恩的音樂路其實絕不平坦。她在母胎時感 

染了德國痲疹 , 出生時只得三根完整的手指。由初生六個月至 

十三歲期間 , 小小的身體已接受了多次外科手術 , 靠矯型來「製 

造」其餘七根手指頭。身體的限制卻沒有影響黃愛恩熱愛鋼琴的 

心。她克服重重困難 , 運用其獨特的雙手學習鋼琴 , 並達到演奏 

級水平。 

黃愛恩現於香港中文大學、香港演藝學院、恆生商學書院等專上 

學院敎授世界音樂。她向本刊表示 , 推動古典和民族音樂是她的 

使命 ; 她希望成為一位世界音樂的大使 , 吸引更多本地樂手演奏 

一些未被發表的作品 , 為民族音樂提供更多演出平台。另一方 

面 , 她亦有敎一些手指有缺陷的學生彈鋼琴。她認為 , 人不應看 

自己沒有什麼、生命中缺乏了什麼 , 而應該是從收獲中學會感 

恩。黃愛恩認為 , 她能夠演奏音樂就是最大的恩典 !

Our November listing includes an Italian lyrical tragedy of the bel canto era, a powerful American 

drama about life in a down-trodden black community, a delightful German comic fantasy, and a 

brilliant French showpiece of exquisite charm. 

7 November : Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda 

With some 70 works produced on stage during his relatively short life, Gaetano 

Donizetti (1797-1848) was certainly one of the most prolific composers of operas 

in music history. Born in Bergamo and educated at the Conservatory of Music in 

Naples, Donizetti’s extraordinary talent and creative facility became widely known 

by the time he was 20 years old. His most popular works demonstrate a musical style 

solidly founded on the Italian bel canto tradition and characterized by brilliant and 

graceful melodies created chiefly for virtuoso singers. 

Maria Stuarda (Mary Stuart), an opera in three acts set to a libretto by Giuseppe 

Bardari, is loosely based on the final year of the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, and 

is a highly romanticized story, with the introduction of a fictional love-triangle 

relationship involving Queen Elizabeth I and the Earl of Leicester, and a fiery meeting 

between the two queens that comes straight from the librettist’s imagination. 

The work failed to get pass the censors due to its unfavourable treatment of royal 

personages. The authors had to demote the status of the protagonists and change 

the title to Buonadelmonte in order to have the opera produced in Naples in 1834. 

The name Maria Stuarda was restored when the opera was performed at La Scala of 

Milan in defiance of the censors the following year. 

In our recording, the title role is sung by soprano Edita Gruberova. Elisabetta (Queen 

Elizabeth) is sung by mezzo-soprano Agnes Baltsa, and Roberto (the Earl of Leicester) 

is sung by tenor Francisco Araiza. The Munich Radio Orchestra and the Bavarian 

Radio Choir provide excellent support under the direction of Giuseppe Patane.

14 November : Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess 

Considered by many to be the greatest and most original indigenous American opera, Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin (1898-1937) was 

inspired by Edwin DuBose Heywood’s novel Porgy, which the composer had read in 1926. Gershwin knew immediately that this was the ideal 

subject for him to turn into an opera and the author was most happy to let him set it to music. 

It was not until 1932 that work could begin, with Heywood and George’s brother Ira Gershwin writing the libretto. It took the composer eleven 

months to write the piano score and nine months to orchestrate the opera.

The world première took place in New York in 

1935 and ran for 124 performances. The work 

draws on the folk idiom, popular rhythms, jazz 

melodies, and Negro spirituals, with all these 

elements ingeniously combined in an entirely 

original creation. 

This work of genius contains numerous pages that 

have become evergreen classics. Of these, the 

lullaby ‘Summertime’ is justly famous. 

We will present a world-renowned recording 

featuring some of the best black opera singers such 

as Willard White, Leona Mitchell, and Barbara 

Hendricks, supported by the Cleveland Orchestra 

and Chorus conducted by Lorin Maazel.

21 November : Nicolai’s Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor 

Born in the same year as Schumann and Chopin, Carl Otto Nicolai (1810- 

1849) is considered a significant figure in early German romantic opera on 

the strength of this single work, The Merry Wives of Windsor, which is still 

regularly performed in German opera houses today. 

Nicolai studied in Berlin. One of his earliest appointments was as organist at 

the Prussian embassy in Rome, where he remained for a number of years and 

received his first commissions to compose operas for Italian theatres. Of his 

entire output of five operas, four were set to Italian libretti. Die Lustigen Weiber 

von Windsor is the only one originally set in his mother tongue, German. 

His music was strongly influenced by the melodious bel canto style of the 

Italian composers, especially of Bellini, which explains the popular success he 

enjoyed during his lifetime.

Shakespare’s famous comedy, featuring the enormous fat knight Falstaff, has been adapted into opera quite a number of times. Nicolai’s 

librettist Mosenthal observed the outline of the original plot faithfully, highlighting the hilarious climaxes and showing how the clever 

housewives of Windsor punish the arrogant knight. 

We will hear a lively recording with bass Karl Ridderbusch in the role of Falstaff, soprano Helen Donath as Frau Fluth, and mezzo-soprano 

Trudeliese Schmidt as Frau Reich. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus are conducted by Rafael Kubelik. 

28 November : Delibes’ Lakmé 

Léo Delibes (1836-1891) is remembered for his three successful works for the theatre: the ballets Coppelia and Sylvia, and his masterpiece 

for the Opéra-Comique of Paris, Lakmé, given its première in 1883. 

Dame Joan Sutherland, soprano, sings the magnificent title role of an Indian priestess in the early days of British colonial rule. Her love for 

an English officer, sanctified by her courage and self-sacrifice, is violently opposed by her father, a Brahmin priest. Tragedy results from the 

irreconcilable crash between two cultures, of which Lakmé offers herself as victim. 

Among the many beautiful pages of Delibes’s s core are the protagonist’s ‘invocation’ to the gods at the temple, a barcarolle known as the 

‘Flower Duet’, sung on the river by Lakmé and her servant maid, and the great coloratura showpiece, the ‘Bell Song’. 

Other principal artists include tenor Alain Vanzo in the role of the English officer Gérald, and baritone Gabriel Bacquier as the Brahmin 

priest Nilakantha. Richard Bonynge conducts the Monte Carlo National Opera Orchestra.

We at Radio 4 are thrilled by the news that our colleague Jenny Lee won a 2010 Bronze 

World Medal for International Radio Programming and Promotion (Documentary: Culture 

and the Arts category) in this year’s New York Festivals. 

Her production, Central Conservatory of Music – A True Story of Survival, Striving and 

Success was the first of a four-part series about the Conservatory, and we are sure the 

theme of her programme must have immediately caught the attention of the festival judges. 

There has been an enormous interest in the west in the recent history of China and it’s 

difficult to imagine a more compelling subject than the amazing and inspiring story of the 

Central Conservatory. Situated in the capital, the Central Conservatory was in the eye of 

the political cyclone that swept China during years of war, revolution, and famine. During 

the Cultural Revolution it was closed for 10 years. As Jenny points out, the celebrated 

Class of 1978 signified the end of a dark period and the dawn of a new era. 

It’s quite a canvas, and Jenny was thorough and painstaking in her research. One of the most 

impressive things about the programme was the presence of individuals who were, or are, 

part of the Conservatory at different stages of the story. Erhu maestro Wang Guotong, for 

example, was one of the early students in the 50s. His recollections are remarkable for the 

insights they provide into what life was like at the time. Composer Chen Yi represents one 

member of the Class of ’78, determined to succeed against the odds after life in the fields. And 

current professor Xu Changjun represents the outlook of today, with responsibilities to see the 

conservatory adapt to the modern era. 

To distinguish oneself in this festival is a wonderful achievement. A huge number of entries 

were received from all over the world, and to win, the programme must be special. It has to 

stand out from the crowd, and it must be of exceptionally high quality. 

One of the main challenges, as Jenny acknowledged, was how to handle all the material 

and how to organize it all into a structured series of four self-contained programmes 

which, themselves, are also part of an ongoing or related theme. ‘One of the techniques in 

broadcasting,’ she says, ‘is to judge what to include, what not to include, and how to include 

it.’ She is also keen to stress that the award belongs to everyone who contributed to the 

programme. ‘It was a team effort’, she says.

的弟弟。今次是我第一次主持爵士靈感這個節目 , 多多指敎 ! 

我與爵士樂結緣於美國這個文化的大熔爐。跟很多在香港長大 

的朋友一樣 , 我從小接受古典音樂訓練 , 初時對爵士樂並無深 

入了解 , 只覺得它能給我一種其他音樂未能給予的、一種很舒 

服的感覺。因為活躍於學界音樂圈 , 我經常有機會演唱一些爵

適逢我與鍾一匡應香港電台第三台邀請 , 為節目「Rock My 

Soul:Gospel Music From Spiritua 

賓主持。我希望在「爵士靈感」中也從歷史角度出發 , 帶大家 

重溫十首爵士經典之最 , 欣賞美妙樂曲之餘 , 也探索爵士樂的 

士標準曲 (Jazz Standard), 包括羅傑斯 (Richard 迅速演變。我 Rodgers)、 

亦會介紹一眾對爵士樂影響深遠的鋼琴家、爵士 

歌舒詠 (George Gershwin)、柏連 (Irving樂 Berlin) 的「Three 等大 Tenors」( 師的作次中音薩克管三巨頭 )、不同的 

品。真正沉迷這種音樂是因為大學時期跟隨哥哥到黑人區「jam 

歌」, 開始真真正正感受到爵士樂的感染力 — 原來音樂是可以 

這樣千變萬化、自由奔放的 ! 

方式、本地爵士樂、以及比較少人觸及的古典爵士融合樂 (Third 

Stream) 等等。 

冀盼「爵士靈感」能夠令你擁抱千變萬化的音樂、擁抱千變萬化 

還記得當時大量購入爵士唱片 , 從比較易聽的 jazz vocal、的生命 ! 

swing、cool jazz 及 bossa-nova 到較複雜的 bebop、postbop

‘50 Years of Enchanting Music’ Concert 

Under the baton of Perry So, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra plays a series of classics 

popularized on the long-running RTHK programme, including Sibelius’ Finlandia, Weber’s 

Invitation to the Dance, Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, and the Andante from Mozart’s Piano 

Concerto No. 21 with pianist Nancy Loo. As a tribute to the beloved memory of the late Chan 

Ho-choi, four signature tunes from the fifty years of the Enchanting Music will also be played.

Joan Sutherland 修德蘭 

Tribute to Joan Sutherland 

Luciano Pavarotti once described Sutherland as ‘the Voice of the Century’. Joan 

Sutherland made her debut at Covent Garden as Lucia in Donizetti’s Lucia di 

Lammermoor, a role which she won critical acclaim. Radio 4 will broadcast her 1961 

recording of this opera, which was instrumental in the revival of the bel canto style 

in opera. 

向修德蘭致敬 

巴筏諾堤曾經形容修德蘭擁有「世紀的聲音」。修德蘭人生第一次當女主角 , 就 

是在高文花園中 , 飾演唐尼采第筆下的露契亞 , 自此與這個角色結下不解之緣。 

第四台將會帶來修德蘭於 1961 年演出《拉美莫爾的露契亞》的經典錄音。

New Sounds from Japan 

The next mushroom promotion ensemble was founded in 2001, to promote 

contemporary music in the Kansai area of Japan. In a concert from this year’s 

Musicarama, the ensemble plays new music written by Japanese composers and 

by Hong Kong composers such as Wendy Lee and Yiu Hon-fai.

Emerson String Quartet at Savannah Music Festival 2010 

‘In Savannah, all kinds of music have a place’, Le Monde. The Savannah Music 

Festival (SMF) in the US state of Georgia is the state’s largest and most distinctive 

cross-genre music festival. Every Tuesday night at 8pm, Radio 4 brings you concerts 

from this year’s SMF. On 1 Dec, the Emerson String Quartet plays Dvořák’s String 

Quartets No.12 and 14 and selections from Cypresses.

Barenboim plays Beethoven 

Daniel Barenboim returned to London’s Royal Festival Hall in February 2010 for four of Beethoven 

piano concertos accompanied by the Staatskapelle Berlin. The Argentine-born Israeli pianist and 

conductor chose a bold programme, pairing Beethoven’s concertos with a selection of works by 

a composer whom Barenboim sees as tracing an equivalent path to Beethoven: the 20th century 

composer Arnold Schoenberg. He sees them as both having pitched their music forward into the 

future. Tune in to Live on 4 starting 12 Nov to share maestro Barenboim’s insights.

Three years ago, when I was visiting Freiburg in South-eastern Germany, 

I took the train to the other side of the country and made a pilgrimage to 

Leipzig. My destination was the Thomaskirche. 

This was where Johann Sebastian Bach worked and lived for the last 27 

years of his life. I had always imagined that Bach, who carried the Baroque 

movement to its peak, must have conducted his own works in a grand 

church, something like Westminster Abbey in London. But contrary to 

my imagination, the Thomaskirche is just a little bit larger than a school 

assembly hall. 

I joined the church service there with my companions. Chorales echoed in 

the room, where Bach’s grave lay just in front of the Sanctuary. The serene 

atmosphere reminded me that as Bach once said, the final reason of music 

“should be none else but the glory of God and the recreation of the mind”. 

He did not think of pleasing the public with special effect or fashionable 

device in his works. In this sense, the plain but solemn Thomaskirche is the 

right place for Bach. 

In the coming Christmas season, Radio 4 will bring Bach’s music to 

Hong Kong Park in the annual programme Christmas Concert in the Park. 

Accompanied by a gentle breeze and bird calls from the trees, this will be 

another wonderful festive musical experience. 

不論是三年前拍照當天 , 還是重溫照片的今日 , 我都不敢一口咬定這就是聖湯瑪士教堂。 

當年我去德國東南部的弗萊堡旅遊 , 特意繞到萊比錫一趟 , 為的就是去聖湯瑪士教堂「朝聖」, 

去看看巴赫任職二十七年的地方。 

堂堂音樂之父為教會而寫的作品 , 想必會在宏偉 

的教堂上演。於是我腦海裡浮現倫敦西敏寺之類 

的龐然巨物 , 但眼前所見的卻是中學禮堂一般的 

樸實建築。該不會找錯地方吧 ? 

抵埗第二天是週日 , 我拉着同行友人參加禮拜。 

合唱團專注地獻唱聖詠 , 巴赫的青銅墓碑就在聖 

殿前方 …… 對了 , 巴赫作曲不為媚人 , 只求以音 

樂歌頌神的榮耀、磨練人的心智。這些由心底傳 

達出來的純淨樂音 , 跟裝潢簡潔的聖湯瑪士教堂 

不是非常合襯麼 ? 

回到香港 , 今年聖誕將再遇巴赫。今次卻將其器 

樂及合唱作品帶出教堂 , 回歸大自然。在香港公 

園聽巴赫 , 想必又是一次獨特的體驗。 

看到這個巴赫雕像時 , 我才確信自己 

找對地方。
