Dr. Cheryl Davis, Principal Submitted by Amanda McBrayer The MES Destination ImagiNation team applied the 7 Habits well by creating a performance that met the challenge! We are very proud! They placed 3 rd at the Regional Tournament and will now advance to the State Tournament. The members of the team are Brandon B., Jakob N., David D., Sydney M., and Trinity T. Cindy Thompson is the MES DI coordinator, and Stacey Burruss is the parent Team Manager. Way to go Hawks! The MES choir traveled to Athens State University to show off their singing voices at the Leader in Me Symposium on February 7, 2014. The MES choir is made up of students in all grade levels and is led by Kindergarten teacher Joanne Bielat. The last Friday of each month, the MES Student Lighthouse Committee sponsors, “Hats on for Cancer.” Students are allowed to bring $1 and wear their favorite hat to school; all funds are donated to the cancer foundation. The Student Lighthouse Committee also sponsored “Pasta for Pennies” benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Over $2000 was donated to help children with cancer. The class that raised the most money will be treated to a wonderful pasta lunch. Leaders help others and the MES National Honor Society is helping fight muscular dystrophy by selling Shamrocks against Dystrophy. MES students are raising funds to honor David D., a fourth grade student that has muscular dystrophy.
“Home of the Hawks” Derrell Brown, Principal Submitted by Patty Tribble Monrovia Middle established a Student Council Association this year that has proven to be an asset to our school. The officers are: Camryn Shields as President, Natalie Craney as Vice President, Nikki Ahlf as Secretary, Kameron Purinton as Treasurer, Jessica Turnage as Sergeant at Arms, Emma O’Brien as 8 th grade Historian, Robyn Cole as 7 th grade Historian, Saylor Cuzzort and Jenna Pair as 6 th grade Historians. Some of the exciting leadership initiatives are: delivering coffee and drinks to our staff, bringing the photo booth to the dances, raising money for Hope for the Homeless, and money for a Kindle Fire drawing for A, A/B and Most Improved STAR students. They have also brought the Hawk back to life to promote school spirit by creating a “Filling the Nest” contest, developing a school newsletter, and much, much, more! We believe that our students' opinions matter and that every student can learn responsibility and develop leadership skills at Monrovia Middle School. It is amazing to see our students work together to plan and carry out activities during the school year! MMS Science Olympiad Team advances to State Championship after taking Bronze in UAH Regional Competition. Team members (12 of 15) either won Gold/Silver or Bronze medals in the science events. Congratulations to the following students for winning the state Junior American Citizens Contest. Their entries will now go on to the regional competition. The winners are as follows: Camryn Shields, Nikki Ahlf, Syndi Bannerman, Luke Berryman, Harley Slater, Michelle Strand, Emma Richards, Brandon Robinson, Brooke Bayuga, Reid McNabb, Kyla Gabriel and EJ Jerez.
