Some of the exciting leadership initiatives are: delivering coffee and drinks to our staff, bringing the
photo booth to the dances, raising money for Hope for the Homeless, and money for a Kindle Fire
drawing for A, A/B and Most Improved STAR students. They have also brought the Hawk back to life to
promote school spirit by creating a “Filling the Nest” contest, developing a school newsletter, and much,
much, more! We believe that our students' opinions matter and that every student can learn responsibility
and develop leadership skills at Monrovia Middle School. It is amazing to see our students work together
to plan and carry out activities during the school year!
The students collected coins during the weeks of March 3-14 for
Pennies for Patients in which the contribution went to the Leukemia
and Lymphoma Society. This was done under the leadership of the
school counselor, Mrs. Karen Bobbitt. The goal was set to reach
$2,000.00. All were excited and very pleased when the coins were
counted on March 14 th and the final total was $2,467.52. The
students exceeded their goal!
During the month of March, the counseling large group guidance
Positive Changes
NHES has begun the journey to become a “Leader In Me” school.
Our faculty and staff members have been making site visits to other
Leader In Me schools; gaining insight from professional development
workshops; and, have been planning ways to transform our facilities.
(Pictured to the left is a newly painted mural depicting the 7 habits.)
NHES also has a new vision statement: Every Parent A Partner—
Every Teacher A Leader—Every Student A Graduate.
Teachers and Employee of the Year (pictured above)
Mrs. Kristin Walker-Meeks (7 th grade teacher) and Mrs. Mollie Kirsopp (1 st grade teacher) were recently
honored as our teachers of the year at NHES. Mrs. Lori Clark (pre-k aide) was selected as our employee
of the year. Mrs. Walker-Meeks graduated from Lipscomb University in 1996. She has taught middle
school Social Studies in Nashville, Atlanta, and this is her 10th year at NHES. She states, “I love my
school and my community, and I hope to be here for many years. Although I was raised in Huntsville, I
consider New Hope my HOME!” Mrs. Mollie Kirsopp graduated from Athens State in 1989. She has
taught 1 st grade for 19 years, with the last 13 being at New Hope. She enjoys reading and hiking in her
spare time. Mrs. Lori Clark has been a member of our New Hope family for the past 9 years as our library
aide, and this year she became the aide for our pre-kindergarten program. Mrs. Clark states, “I have truly
enjoyed both positions”. She has been an asset to our school.
NHES student mathematicians
celebrated National Pi Day on 3/14.
8 th Grade “Mock Interview” Day
The 8th grade students have been under the guidance of Mrs.
Katie Jewart, Calhoun Community College Career Coach,
throughout the school year and have recently been working on
resume writing/interview skills. They had the opportunity to
put those skills into action on March 4 th with a Mock Interview
Day held in our library. Business leaders from the community
and career coaches from CCC volunteered their time to
conduct interviews with the entire 8 th grade class. All students
prepared a resume for the interview and dressed in a
professional manner for the day. A special “thanks” to our counselor, Mrs. Amber Ashworth, for
organizing this event.
NHES Archery Winners
island. Visiting the salt marsh was exciting as they all got stuck in
the marsh! Skimming the bay with different sized nets even
brought a special treat with the collecting of a jelly fish! They
dragged nets in the Gulf of Mexico to collect plankton, which they
carried back to the lab and looked at under various types
informative presentation that taught the story of Rosa Parks and her
contribution to the struggle for civil rights for all Americans. The
classroom skit, “Let Freedom Ring,” was presented by Mrs. Lee’s talented
4 th grade class. It was just one of the ways Owens Cross Roads School
helped celebrate Black History Month in February.
Owens Cross Roads School successfully applied for a $3,000 Spanish
language enrichment grant from the Pittsburg Paint and Glass Corporation.
This grant is being used by the 2 nd grade at Owens Cross Roads School to
bring in a certified teacher once per week, for teaching students Hispanic
culture in the areas of social studies, science and the arts. The 2 nd graders
are also planning a “Cinco de Mayo” festival for the first week in May.
The week of March 3 rd through March 7 th was a happy and very
busy week for both students and staff at Owens Cross Roads School
as they celebrated everything about “Dr. Seuss” and “Read Across
America Week.” Students and staff began the week by wearing
party hats to honor the birthday of Theodor Geisel, otherwise known
the world over as, “Dr. Seuss.” Tuesday was “Pajama Day” and
Wednesday was “Dress Wacky Day.” It was great fun! Thursday
was reading everything about Dr. Seuss plus a wonderful school
assembly and a parade through our hallways. Friday ended a great
week with a school pride day in which all wore their Owens Cross
Roads t-shirts.

It contains a project that students can create using Haiku Deck (web app
The Sparkman Middle School band recently participated in all-state and
all-district tryouts. This is an intense audition that includes students from
Madison, Limestone, and Morgan counties and all of the cities in those counties. Although only 8 SMS
students auditioned, we still set a record achievement for the SMS band program! All 8 out of 8 made the
district honor band. FIVE of those students qualified for the Alabama All-State band! We couldn’t be
more proud of these students: Amaya Booker, Sam Sellers, Dori McClure, Grace Gordon, Josiah McBee,
Steven Allen, Angela Hart, and Alex Jones.

To kick off the second semester, SMS hosted a talent show for all students! Our goal was to
and see potential in themselves and others.
