Cardiovascular <strong>Health</strong> branch<br />
In <strong>Alabama</strong>, as in the nation, cardiovascular disease<br />
is the leading cause <strong>of</strong> death. Cardiovascular disease,<br />
which includes heart disease and stroke, kills more<br />
Alabamians than all forms <strong>of</strong> cancer combined.<br />
<strong>Alabama</strong> ranks fourth in the nation in death rates<br />
due to heart disease. Major health risk factors such as<br />
overweight, sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure,<br />
and high cholesterol levels contribute markedly to the<br />
development <strong>of</strong> heart disease. Community level efforts to<br />
make modest changes in one or more <strong>of</strong> these risk factors<br />
can have a large public health impact in reducing the<br />
incidence <strong>of</strong> heart disease.<br />
<strong>Alabama</strong> ranks fifth in the nation in deaths due to<br />
stroke. A major risk factor for stroke is uncontrolled<br />
hypertension. Treating and controlling high blood<br />
pressure is essential in preventing stroke and other<br />
chronic conditions. Recognizing the signs and symptoms<br />
<strong>of</strong> stroke and getting immediate medical treatment are<br />
